I clicked this video thinking it was a breakdown of why there are few noticeably great inside centers in the modern game

I do think 7's is too open and would love a tournament like this with big names but they should do like a north vs south or prem vs top 14 all star barbarian style games. make a day of it and have womens teams warming up or something

Of course another variation of Union also already exists, 10s, which plays a bit more like a hybrid between 7s and 15s as you can imagine.

Loved watching all the Quins footage in this - the way they are playing is what will bring new fans to Union, not some pointless cash grab format variation. 👍

Rugby is awesome. I grew up in a country where it isn't a big sport. I wish it was more popular and most will be surprised how many people are curious about the sport. I think simplifying the sport might help. Having fewer players on a side might make the game less physical and more fast-paced. Here in the USA people are becoming hesitant about the sport because of injuries and for some the pace of the game. I don't know, 12s might be good for the sport/

i think 12s is gonna be a way to try new changes before implementing them into 15s. Trying to speed the game up is a way to make it more exciting for the casual viewer. Less players means a more open game then normal and less forwards means a faster game. Having a smaller scrum and less of them should lead to a decrease in long term injuries (head, neck).

Idk I genuinely think 12s would be a more fun way to play the game. The perfect amount of players for it to have enough complexity but with more space. I hope it goes ahead. If it works out it works out and if it doesn’t it doesn’t.

Sometimes I feel like rugby administrators don't like this sport, everytime a boring game takes place there are talks of changing rules. Every sport has boring games, it's inevitable, but rugby admins act like rugby is a boring sport by nature and it has to be changed, and the conversation reegnites after any boring match. It's great to watch the Harlequins play but I don't like the argument "See, the Harlequins won the premiership playing good rugby, so rugby can be exciting" because I think a team doesn't have to play like Harlequins to be entretaining. Sometimes I enjoy a good kicking game, or a good defense and even more a good maul. Rugby IS an exciting sport, you just have to introduce people to it, they are going to autoomatically like it or at least be interested by it

  • @theultimatesharpshooter6734

Urg, once again the key drivers of the game don't know how to grow the sport. I can tell you, I didn't watch rugby because of the offloads and running rugby in Super Rugby. I got into rugby through the Springboks (I am South African) and the passion surrounding that team. The feeling of going to war and watching players fight for their country was the main draw card for me. Later on the tactical side is what made me a die hard fan.
Building the foundation of your sport based on "ooohh, aahh" moments is unsustainable because people will get bored if they don't have a connection with these teams or if there is no narrative. Super Rugby was always going to die in the future when the local leagues of the SH unions became irrelevant.
Even with Football, I was never really a fan of the sport but in recent years the competitiveness of the premier league and the numerous stories of the clubs got me hooked into watching the league.

Like T20 does in cricket, (IMO) I think this is only going to detract from the other forms of the game that we currently have. I believe this tournament should be the same proposed clubs on offer but in 15s. Why cant we see the best teams in the world competing against each other in the regular format? 10s would even be better than this.

  • @jacobmackenzie4836

I think the 100 in cricket has worked really well, tbh. It brought shit loads of new fans into cricket, with loads being women and kids. It was also so much more of a spectacle than county t20 - watching finals day this year it was depressingly less exciting than the 100 that I'd been watching the whole summer (even though I'm a Kent fan and so view it with very rose tinted glasses!). What the 100 lacks is international competition, which - like rugby - is the only bit that most casual fans care about. Mind you, all these points were made about t20 20 years ago "We already have one day cricket, why do we need this?" etc. I guess sports just change, and with change they get new fans, and then the old fans just kind of keep watching, because at least it's sport.

I was transfixed by the slow motion Quins footage but do worry about player welfare in this plan. Rugby 12s is not like the IPL and the 100 in terms of the pressures that it will put on the players' bodies. I want the players to earn more from the rich backers if they can somehow though. There are too many undeserving rich around and they should share their ill-gotten gains

  • @qcthesxientist

This reminds me of the 9s in the nrl and lets not pretend that 9s is anything more than a fun concept for preseason games. I think rugby needs to realise that their is no quick fixs and that all the constant changes in competition structure do is make rugby feel more and more disjointed and hard to follow. If we do want to increase rugbys popularity I think we would do this off the back of a international competition since its alot easier to get someone new rooting for their country to do well than some random club.

  • @yooyist
    @yooyist Před 2 lety

There are already too many games and way too many injured players because of that. Rugby Union is growing, it has, as you said, a working dynamic with the 7's. I don't see this new competition working like they would like it to do. This is pure marketing for sure.

Rugby is potentially the most annoying sport to be a devote supporter. People need to stop doing this new stuff because it doesn’t work, it’s like rugby x that nobody asked for. Literally all I remember was one tournament and that’s it, I don’t think I’ve heard anything since. How about instead of doing this the governing bodies just fix the actual issues with the game. Nobody asked for this, nobody wants this. If you want to watch fast, free flowing you watch sevens. I want to know where they got the £250 million figure from because the best of the best won’t compete in this because why would they? They have no need to compete, it starts when the northern hemisphere season starts and if they get injured then I can’t see their actual club wanting to pay them because they’ve been injured doing something they’re not contractually obliged to do. This is gonna be a massive flop and just depressing to see.
