Regarding Mind Shatter, it actually depicts a murder. A murder of crows is a group of crows.
-Hmm, Homer I'm very uncomfortable having a gang of crows in our bedroom.
-It's a murder, honey. A group of crows is called a murder.
Who said TV can't teach you stuff?
I came here for this comment lol XD
Unless it's Ravens, then it's an unkindness.
But I like to believe it's a murder :)
Damn, got em.
@AwkwardDreamer an unkindness of ravens is truly one of the greatest terms for a group of a particular species.
I was SUPER disappointed with March of the Machines Aftermath, I was looking forwards to a flavour filled story set that showed how the worlds had changed, even if it was to be really small, but it just wasn't what Wizards said it would be
I really liked the actual cards quite a bit, felt a lot like a Pioneer Horizons mini set, maybe nix the busted format defining bits. The whole MotM stort arch fell super flat though.
And Koma was killed offscreen!
MoM and war of the spark were both so disappointing from a lore perspective
Honestly, the only good part of the entire phyrexian arc were the teamup cards. Borborygmos and Fblthp/Kogla and Yidaro are so cool.
@@metalhev3989 I like Drana and Linvala & Kroxa and Kunoros myself...
Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate also has two chickens in it: *Kindred Discovery* and *Contraband Livestock,* which are real cards, so.. technically CLB wins the category!
Wooow I missed the chicken on Kindred Discovery! It was too tree coloured 😅
@@CardmarketMagic To be honest, I just used the Scryfall tagger, so if you did all that by hand.. you are crazy! 😂
You know cardmarket is sick when they have their own grammys for magic
Never forget the Forsythee Awards
Don’t insult them by comparing them to the Grammies
I would say they’re more like the Dundees than the Grammys…
Another technicality, but Unstable had Infinity Elemental for infinite power!
I'd consider Innistrad: Double Feature as the most disappointing. It was looking to be a curated draft experience of both Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow. Instead, they just jammed every card in there, including a few reprints with the exact same art. Not only that, but their "scary movie aesthetic" was just tossing a grayscale filter over the normal art and tweaking the border. It was absolutely mailed in when it came to the effort.
They skimmed over it when awarding highest converted mana cost, but infinity is _technically_ not a number, and therefore doesn't count.
@@dottn It's not even a technicality. Infinity is just straight up not a number, the same as "really really small" is not a number. It's a property a number can have, but infinity itself is just a concept. There is no value which can be assigned to infinity. You can't do math with infinity. You can only do math with numbers that have the property of being infinite, not with the property itself. "One infinity plus two infinity" is a nonsensical statement.
I think Ravnica Allegiance's bears might come from every guild having their own bear, alongside a handful of monocolor ones.
Yeah, having 5 Guildmages in RTR, GTC, GRN, & RNA probably put all of those near the top.
I'm surprised "You are Already Dead" wasn't counted as a murder for Neon Dynasty. The card says the ogre died by the cut, but hadn't realized it yet.
Yeah the ogre's chest is sliding off his body. Seems pretty incompatible with life.
I just looked through the set. Peerless Samurai, Soul Transfer, Debt to the Kami, and Tamiyo's Compleation all seem pretty murdery to me as well, and The Fall of Lord Konda, while not being explicit about it, does reference an event in Kamigawa's past where the emperor had his eyes gouged out and was petrified and shattered into pieces. While this surprisingly didn't kill him, and he's very much alive as strewn rubble in the forest, I do think that's a pretty murdery thing to do to someone.
Blade of the north star
3:39 Mind Shatter definitely depicts a murder since it has a flock of crows in the art
Wrong because if you check every picture about discarding cards in magic is about damaging the brain, not killing the person. Like Wrench Mind, Dread Fugue, Go Blank or Liliana's Caress. Is like damaging the brain when you make discard a card
A flock of crows is called a murder. @@ccccc6
@@ccccc6"murder" is the name for a group of crows
Now you have to have the community make some awards
The most flashy set..
i'm def curious what the community would give the most disappointing set to !
i remember at the time thinking battle for zendikar was extremely disappointing so i personally might give it to that -- granted there have been worse sets since but i didn't neccesarily have any expectations for those sets :P
*>Presents Magic awards dressed as a sailor.*
*>Refuses to elaborate.*
*>Leaves.*
Yes ⛵
They should call them "Sailors" from now on
I don't know why Carl is dressed as a sailor but I love it!
Mirrodin has 9 cards banned in modern: the 5 artifact lands, second sunrise, cloudpost, seething song, and chrome mox. Also atog (as a reprint) and disciple of the vault are banned in pauper. Was the award for total bans and Lurrus was counted several times?
We looked at cards that were banned. Not banned cards. Cards that were simply banned from the format's inception were not counting because then the answer would be really boring and obvious (Alpha)
Historic brawl also has Chalice of the Void Banned.
Edit: So excluding cards that are banned at the inception of a format, Mirrodin comes out with five. Chalice of the Void: Historic Brawl/restricted in Vintage. Seething Song: Modern. Second Sunrise: Modern. Cloudpost: Modern/Pauper. Disciple of the Vault: Pauper.
As a reprint Atog makes a sixth: banned in Pauper.
I would argue the 5 artifact lands should count, since they were banned in standard briefly before rotation (along with archbound ravager) so the total number of “cards that were banned” from Mirrodin should be at least 11.
Please never stop guys, these videos seriously are so good.
Another great concept and video. You guys are on a roll.
Award ideas:
-Set with the largest creatures (by volume on art)
-Set with the most birds for scale
-Set with the most quotations in flavor text
-Set with with the most cards which have "flying" in it's rules text
This one was super fun, mostly because y’all obviously had fun making it! Great job to everyone who worked on it!
This was so fun and nerdy. I love you guys!
You forgot a murder in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty,. The card 'You are Already Dead' shows an ogre being killed, he just doesn't realize it yet
I completely missed that the ogre was already sliced 😅 I thought it was just two menacing dudes chilling
That was my immediate reaction, I was like "I KNOW there are some other black spells with some guy getting killed". Besides Already Dead there are a few other debatable ones like Reckoner's Bargain or Soul Transfer where I really have no idea what's happening in the art.
@@GiganticPawUnit If you look closely on reckoner's bargain, it's actually a samurai givin a gift to an ogre 🤓
debt to the kami and lethal exploit too
but yeah, come to think of it a lot of this set's removal doesn't *show* the murder, it's more like
"oh this person's shooting out a blast of flame,
this person's got a lot of spooky knives..."
@@angeldoyle859 Lethal Exploit appears to show a Dragonfly Suit or similar piloted robot - besides the similarity in design, the weapons in its chest are VERY small in proportion to the machine.
I Hope you guys are having those awards at every end of the year. Best/worst sets and some other randomness.
I loved the award on the fly for biggest disappointment the best. The discussion was hilarious.
Or make a quiz out of this? It often felt like you wanted to quiz the others and then you gave the answer right away.
Carl's face at 7:12 is why I love him
I loved War of the Spark, but I was disspointed that Nicol Bolas hardly killed anyone
Gideon *bombastic side eye*
They killed Dack Fayden in a commercial and he didn’t even get a card!
I suppose NickyB didn't want is citadel stolen :)
He killed plenty of unnamed Planeswalkers introduced entirely for convenience of plot like Star Trek redshirts 😂
Learned a lot (kind of) about some magic sets, thanks cardmarket ❤️
That was really fun, and your editor is amazing!
Just gotta say that I really love your content! Ur such a great trio and I hope you'll keep it up for a long time coming
Thabk you :) we hope so too
The blooper audio at the end is a top notch addition.
Love the concept, you're doing such an amazing job with this channel !
I'm happy you enjoyed it :) thank you
Bit of clarification for Toralf; A goose is a simic creation blending a really large duck and an angry snake together, and a chicken is a chicken.
I'd be interested to see the sets with the highest average power, cmc etc. You'd think Onslaught block would be in there somewhere with their CMC matters theme or Brother's War with all of those prototypes.
Possibly the best awards ceremony I have seen, it had Bear Cub!
I would love to hear your award for "Best/Worst Tribe" in terms of story, flavor, mechanics etc.
I imagine everyone will have totally different reasons for "Most Disappointing Set." Mine is 8th Edition, the first new set released after I started playing in Scourge. I fell in love with MTG thanks to the story of Kamahl and the Mirari, the society of Otaria (went back and read the books from Odyssey through Scourge), the art, and feel of antiquity that the original borders had. Then came the ugly-ass modern border in a set with no story. They replaced the historic aesthetic of the cards with a lazy MacOS-looking face that i still can't stand to this day.
At least the modern borders look better now 😅 8th Ed really looked like it was made on Word
Very true, the look of modern came a long way while I was out of the game.
this is super fun, only this channel would do their own award show for mtg sets lol
that was actually such a cool video! i would love if you guys did another
Love the videos, you guys make some of the most entertaining mtg content around. Also the "We got banned cards in BRAWL?!" Tickles me every time😂
I'm happy you enjoyed it :)
This channel puts out banger after banger, never disappointed to see another video dropped from them
Great video as always! I could definitely do with a few more videos like this!!
I'm happy you enjoyed it :)
Best way to wake up is to see a new cardmarket video!
Some suggestions for the next installment: the set with the longest cardnames, the set with the most different creature types, the set that introduced the most new creature types, the set with the highest amount of {insert color} mana pips, the set with the most non-basic lands, the set with worst translated card name (english to german), the set with the most vampires, the set (from the 21st century) with the fewest cards on sale on Cardmarket OR with the least bought cards, the set (from 1996 onward) with the priciest booster packs at the time of recording, the set (starting with legends) with the fewest gold/multicolored cards,...
Techically the set with the highest power is Unstable because of Infinity Elemental, also I'm pretty sure Mirrodin has way more cards banned than Ikoria
Infinity is not a number ;) Mirrodin has a higher amount of illegal cards, but we looked at sets that had cards banned (as in, they were legal, then became banned). We did not count cards that were disallowed from the format's inception because then the answer would be too boring and predictable (Alpha/Beta)
I just checked Mirrodin has a lot of banned cards in modern rn. basically all my favourite cards from that set.
@@CardmarketMagicalso Conspiracy has 25 banned cards. So that wins by that criteria.
@@Enchurito conspiracy cards were not banned, they were simply never legal
@@CardmarketMagic Then, wouldn't it be Unglued with the B.F.M. having 99? Does Core 2020 actually manage to cover that much advantage?
I'd like to see awards for individual cards as well. I think that would be fun! Some ideas:
- Card with the most keywords
- Card that grants the highest numerical power and toughness boost (so no +X, and +1 for each only counts as value of 1)
- Card art with the most wings, tails, teeth, something like this
- Card that creates the most different types of tokens (excluding copies)
- Card that has the most instances of a common word like "if", "may", "then", "choose", "target", etc.
what about "you are already dead" for a murder in kamigawa neon dynasty?
I only now realized that the ogre is sliced in half 😅 I thought they were just chilling
@@CardmarketMagicnot a murder though, because they were already dead
This was hilarious, please do more of this. Also I guessed Legions to be the highest total power set, as I'm pretty sure it consists of ONLY creatures.
I also thought Legions would be it as well, but I just went through and tallied them up and despite the best efforts of Krosan Cloudscraper and its 13/13 statline the set still only comes in at 357 total power. It's a small set and it has so many 1 and 2 power creatures.
Man, this kind of humor is just the best.
I love how these guys don't take themselves too seriously and are naturally having a blast in doing so.
These goofy ass awards like the Thoralf or War Of The Spark one were goddamn hilarious.
I would also really love to see these 3 evaluate all the MTG expansion-blocks depending on their personal preferences
and finding a consensus to put them into a (subjective) Tier-list. Would also be a neat opportunity for some storytime.
We actually tried something very similar! One of our longest videos yet is coming out tomorrow where we tried to make a tierlist for MTG mechanics 😅
First Innistrad set was pure gold both as a limited format and in flavor (have they ever nailed flavor like that since?), and on top of that it had some real banger cards. Returning there was always going to be disappointing and it was.
I thought SOI and EMN weren't bad, but I agree with MID and VOW were extremely disappointing
Especially returning there, again...
We feel similarly. We are not sure if it's nostalgia goggles or actual design though 😅
@@CardmarketMagicnah, you're still correct- I started playing around Amonkhet and I still think OG Innistrad was great
In Neon Dynasty "You are already dead" is a murder. The ogre has been slashed in half and hasn't realised he has been murdered yet - but it's clear he is either dead or immediately going to die as there is a cut running through the entirety of his body.
I did not see the slash 😅 I thought it was just two villains staring you down menacingly
The murder in Morningtide is a pun - it’s a murder (group) of crows in the art
I need more of these serious awards
Congratz Thoralf! I knew you could do it.
Carl, you're absolutely _rocking_ that sailor top by the way.
You look really sleek :3
Loving it. Great content
This is amazing. You did forget You Are Already Dead when counting murders, though.
I did not see the slash 😅 I thought it was just two villains staring you down menacingly
I had to check the math for most banned cards and found that Eldraine had seven bans (Oko everywhere; Once Upon a Time in Modern, Pioneer, and Standard; Mystic Sanctuary in Modern and Pauper; Escape to the Wilds, Cauldron Familiar, Fires of Invention, and Lucky Clover in Standard). A throne like that befits a crown.
Also, pretty amazing to see how many M20 cards showed up on that list. That whole year from WAR to Ikoria was crazy.
now THIS is the content I am here for
Chickens are member of the order Galliformes whilst the geese are members of the order Anseriformes. The biggest difference between the two orders is that the Anseriformes are more suited to living by the water whilst the Galliformes are more suited to live on land.
Thank you for the scientific answer :)
Keep doing this format of video!
not the fuckin MTV logo at the start lol, absolutely love this
I love this vid, please do it again :D
Great, now you guys made me want to know what is the set with the AVERAGE highest mana value and creature's power
love this video! super interesting
This was amazing!
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN A GOOSE IS NOT A CHICKEN"-Thorlaf
🤣🤣
Very fun concept, more please! Most disappointing set for me would be march of the machines, while the overall set was a banger it took an awesome buildup of Kaldheim through all will be one and pretty much squandered it.
gosh i love that outro song ❤ apropos worst set, modern horizons 2, because of cards like solitude, ragavan from that moment onwards i fear power creep soo much
The mind shatter turned the guy's head into a murder of crows.
Wonderful vid. You absolutely should’ve committed to the Merkel bit. That would’ve been amazing. You should keep it in the back pocket if you ever do a podcast.
This video had me rolling! But I think You Are Already Dead from Kamigawa should be considered a murder
I did not see the slash 😅 I thought it was just two villains staring you down menacingly
I'd be interested to see some awards based on like, what a community thought about the card art in the set, or something like that.
Oh! Or, like, if a meta has had a problem at some point, what set has been most good impact at solving problems that were in the meta at the time right before it was released?
Oooooh, that's a really tough to research but fun one :D
Id love to see the Set with the most cards appeared in Cardmarket videos.
Hahahaha somehow looking at every single magic card to look for murders and chickens seems less daunting than looking at all of our videos 😅 but I assume that the answer, outside of lands, would be Ragavan
omgggg oscars for magic??? letss gooo! please do more of these!
I think you could make the case that there are 2 murders in morningtide, both on mind shatter.
One being the man killed, the other being the group of crows doing it.
"What do you mean goose is not a chicken??" 🤣
How did you check all card arts for murders??? Please explain
OMG 7:08 I am dying from laughter. THis was great to watch.
I want to see you guys make decks out of interesting cards no one looks at.
That's the way I play MtG!
We do that on the channel pretty often :) we take audience brews with cards that are not often seen and play with them on camera :) we are filming the next one tomorrow even
@@CardmarketMagic but I want YOU guys to do that! :P I loved it when you made Commander decks, and Thoralf brought the Phoenix deck etc!
nice, mtg awards show!
Mind shatter depicts a murder of crows, so it still counts if the person in the art somehow survived.
Dragon's maze didn't exactly not disappoint.
Great content.
You are Already Dead is a card from NEO that depicts someone being cut in half, which feels pretty murder-y
I did not see the slash 😅 I thought it was just two villains staring you down menacingly
3:43 Mind Shatter definitely depicts a murder, since those are crows
Carl with the coolest shirt once again!
11:00 Best Reward...ever
"And.....the"
Kamigawa also has that spooky ramen shop, that's implied murder
Thirsting Roots is a 1 mana proliferate in green, and can also be a land search. Mid but kind of good
Great video as usual Carl!
Any chance we could get Riley Knight on as a guest sometime? If he's too expensive or there are some personal reasons, I get that, it's none of my business, but I bet a whole bunch of us would enjoy seeing him join y'all.
I actually reached out to Riley early on. Turns out he ghosted Jamin & Thoralf when he moved to Austalia and there is now bad blood between them. I doubt that collaboration will be possible any time soon unfortunately
I'm pretty sure all lot of the Bears in Ravnica Allegiance come from the completion of the Guildmages-cycle. That's 5 already & the rest is just some random 2mana 2/2s.
great idea!
Technically the highest-power-in-a-set award should be a tie between Unsanctioned and Unstable, as they both have the card Infinity Elemental, a ∞/5 creature.
Love your videos guys! Wish I could give you guys a modern deck idea but I’m in the wrong country sadly.
Hopefully one day we grow the marketplace and everyone will get to participate :)
Doll juice.
Edit:
Ursine Standard - GG
Creature - Bear Flagbearer
While an opponent is choosing targets as part of casting a spell they control or activating an ability they control, that player must choose at least one 2/2 creature you control on the battlefield if able.
2/2
I think you missed a murder in Neon Dynasty. You Are Already Dead depicts an ogre who has been sliced in half and his upper torso is about to slide off the rest of his body. It's a pretty iconic kind of murder.
I saw it and didn't see the slash 😅 I thought it was just two bandits looking tough
antiquities has the golgothian sylex though - while not a direct depiction of a murder, it literally murdered EVERYTHING
3:51 thoralf's face made me burst out laughing
Everybody knows the three archetypes of Magic Players! The Casual Carl, the Spikey Toralf, and... Jamin
I would like to see, after "Most banned cards":
- Most bant cards
- Most band cards (either the keyword or a musical group; or both)
@Thoralf
Geese are usually larger and heavier than chickens. They have longer necks and stronger wings, making them good fliers. Chickens are smaller, short-necked and terrible fliers. Geese have strong beaks, perfect for grazing on plants and murdering insects. Chickens have shorter beaks that are only useful for pecking at grains and small bugs. Geese have webbed feet that help them swim in magical lakes, while chickens have regular feet that are only good for scratching the ground. They also make different sounds. Geese make a loud pants-shitting honking sound while chickens make an annoying "cluck cluck" sound all the time. Goose eggs are larger, have a tougher shell and are more expensive than those of a chicken. Geese are migratory birds, traveling long distances during different seasons of the year and are notable for flying in a V-shape formation. Chickens are not migratory and usually live at your granny's farm in a chicken coop all year round. Geese (the gilded ones at least) also come with their own food and can waste a whole turn to make some more of it.
Thank you for the science 😎
Digging Carl’s Sailor Moon cosplay
Carl has a shift at Scoops Ahoy from Stranger Things after the awards show
Sailor Carl is one of the best iterations of Carl so far!
Not a joke, LOVE the outfit Carl! Was Cardmarket next big investment forming a Navy?
Hahaha no, I just went on a boat that weekend, so I had to buy a sailor's outfit 😅 because I could not go a boat without the sailor's uniform. But thank you :) I like it too!
Toffel, geese are kinda like chickens..
If chickens were aggressive hissing monsters lol.
Love the vid guys! ***** all day!
I'd argue that geese are kind of like ducks 😅
- Carl
@@CardmarketMagic fare statement, stretch-neck ducks makes sense. But still hissing monsters lol.
