I've had my .44 Talo for a couple of years now, and love it. At 7 yards it will shoot a one ragged hole group, if you do your part. I carry a Glaser Safety slug 1st, and either 180 grjhp's, or 250 gr Hardcast Keith type lead bullets. At the range, yes, the grips are not comfortable without gloves, but in a real life situation, you won't feel them. I love my Talo.
My biggest regret is when I sold mine back in 2015. The weight is perfect and heavy enough to take the recoil compared to the S&W 44 mag backpacker which kicks like a mule. I prefer the traditional look of the M629 Deluxe stainless also to the backpacker which has the fiber optic front site. The backpacker just has a cheesy look to me. This model is nice.
I had a 629 with an 83/8" barrel and traded for a 5" Classic which is heavy the whole length of the barrel. I ordered the competition wood grips in oak and cherry. They fit a little farther down on the back of the trigger guard which should help. Important to use left hand to hold tighter when shooting a 44. You'll figure it out. Love Smith's DA/ SA
I think you made the right choice with the 3 inch deluxe over the smaller performance center... it has a slightly longer barrel and full size grips... it helps tame the 44 magnum a little

Picked up one just like yours last Saturday 629-6 with 3" barrel. Own 2 others but never one with a barrel this short. Wonderful gun. The grips are beautiful to look at but not much fun to shoot. I will be replacing them ASAP. Glad you like yours as much as I like mine. Thanks

I agree with your assessment re magnum rounds. I wish they had made the top part of the grip a little bit better so it would not cut into your hand. Shooting 44 special at the range is beautiful. I will say that if I carry it CCW I'll definitely carry Magnum rounds because if I'm using it in self-defense I'm not going to care if I get a little cut on the web of my hand.

Had a K Frame Round Butt Hogue Monogrip on my Smith Model 29 Horten Special 3”, worked fine. Mind you the original factory wood was good too.

I have the same gun and have mounted some Altamont S&W N Round Combat Super Walnut Finger-grooved grips. They cost $58 with Medallions and shipping. I believe Altamont makes the grips that come on these revolvers, using S&W and TALO specifications.
The Altamont N Round Butt Combats are thicker, and have a very comfortable palm-swell and thumb ridge that feels great in hand. They have many other options and finishes to choose from too. But for $58 bucks, you cannot beat them, and they fit and look better than the original grips.
I haven't shot the revolver with them mounted yet, so I cannot definitively say they don't dig into the hand webbing. But I have some on my S&W 686 L frame, and they do not on that gun. They are very comfortable shooting grips.

What grips did you go with? I really like the short barrel model 69 but I felt like they could have done better with it.
I bought one of the Ruger GP-100s in 44 special. It's so big it could have been and should have been a magnum.
I bought the PC because of the superior action.

It's made some brief appearances in a few videos, but you're right, it needs to be shot much more. It's become one of my favorites.
I do have a video I'm planning to do in a few weeks that will include this and most if my other 44s. I will have to feature this one more specifically though.
(I'm in the south, so winters are actually more pleasant for range trips than summers are.)

These are really great revolvers with really bad grips on them. I bought one a few months ago, and got it at such a great price that I decided to replace the original TALO grips with a pair of older Lew Horton combat grips. I grabbed a pair form an eBay auction for a decent price and refinished them. They feel so much better in hand, and are very comfortable to shoot. And an added plus is that they look tons better on the gun than the cheap looking TALO grips.

Love mine , only shoot warm & hot 44 special ... never shot any mags . My charter 44 is too painful with hot specials . I have other options for full mags . Thanks . I have a Pachmayr , I need to freeze it & work down a small spot that will slow down unloading a bit .
First thing I shot in my Bulldog was some hot 44 spl. As soon as I got home I put a couple band aids on my fresh wounds (that Bulldog will bite the hand that feeds it), and then filed down some of the razor sharp edges in the trigger guard. It's still not the best gun for hot loads, but it's better now that I took care of the sharp edges, and I leave the hot loads for other guns like this 629.

There r some bantam grips fro ahrends that would make that look even more awesome but they're very pricey. Be nice if hogue offered the rubber grips in bantam version and multiple colors too
I’m interested in this gun or the 2 3/4” model 69. One of the two will be a hiking companion as my bear gun. The 69 is leading because of the lower weight.

S&W Model 629 with 4-6 inch barrel, closer to 4. Already have my MS concealed carry license. I got before constitutional carry was passed here.

Sorry, typo. Clicking back into here, I saw the title to your video. I have always been partial to S&W. May look at Ruger or Taurus or other brands, just my grandfather always had Smiths.
Maybe it's me, but I can't shoot a revolver worth a flip. I owned a King Cobra back when Colt made a great gun. I could put a decent group on paper with single action. But double, forget about it.
Maybe it was because I shot the riffling out of a Ruger mark II growing up and a semi just feels natural to me.
Enough of me whining. Great looking six shot!

Did you change the grips? Have you settled on a holster?
Mine did not break, but I didn't shoot it very much before I swapped to the Hogue. I've heard of several people's grips breaking.
Get some pachmayr diamond pro grips I use them for mine they cover the back nicely

I have been looking at this model the performance center 629 and maybe the 69 combat magnum. Whichever one I get will be for ccw in the streets and the woods so magnums would be used in the woods and probably specials for the city. Any recommendations on which may fit the roll the best?
The 69 is slightly thinner, and it's 5 shot vs 6. I like both, and have carried both. If only getting one...it really just comes down to your preferences. They're all good options.
As far as this model vs the performance center - I looked at both, and I settled on this one because it ended up being essentially the same thing for less money. The performance center model is nice, but the minor differences didn't warrant the extra cost for me.

I got the 4 inch 629 44 magnum
I worked my grips down, now no blood. Also rose wood is fine to look at but will crack or break with stout loads. I mean a lot; say 150 to 300. Mine cracked at 234! I got set from Altamont they are little longer but still had to work wood. Made great thicker wood and I chose a different wood. It's my everyday carry gun. 200g Underwood say 1650 fps on box. That's out of 6 inch barrel. Mine average 1521fps at 7 feet from my chronograph. 12 shot average. My 240g Buffalo Bore semi hard cast 1352. Yes mines a Talo. I got real lucky with lands and grooves in barrel. My Ruger shoots the Underwood average 1446 with 5 inch barrel. I'll get berried with this gun when I die. 30 yard groups are 2&1/3 inch with underwood and 3&1/4 with buffalo bore. But that's cocking hammer back for each shot. Not cocking I get 3 to 5 inch groups. Hope helps all u out!

I've had a little more time at the range, and I'm loving this revolver.
S&W was having problems with getting the barrel on straight for awhile. It was all over CZcams for awhile. I saw one in December in new gun case.
When you went looking at the numerous S&W you described did you notice any ?
I saw several videos about that as well, and I checked mine as soon as I picked it up - mine seems to be just fine. I did the majority of my window shopping online, as the local market seems to be pretty light, and pretty expensive for S&W wheel guns.
500 S&W X-frame Hogue rubber recoil absorbing sorbethane padded rubber grip fits my model 329PD.
Where did you find the black desantis holster for the 629 deluxe? I can only seem to find the tan leather.

I bought a 629 TALO just like that about 6 months ago. I have about 300 rounds through it. I'm right there with you on the grip biting the web of my hand. I've also noticed that my grip is already cracking on the back right at the bottom of the grip frame. I've also seen the same crack on other 629 TALOs on CZcams. how's your grip holding up?
No cracks on mine, but I went ahead and replaced them with something a little more "functional". I'll post a video about the new grips early next week.
What's your favorite load to shoot in yours?
I like longer barreled pistols maybe because they look cooler but maybe there more accurate too. Still love this gun we only have 4 pistols 2 22s, 1 9mm, and 1 45 auto.
2 22s don't add up to a 44, but it is a great place to start. ;). When I was your age, all I had was a BB gun. My dad had a 22 rifle, but we almost never shot it.
Loads of Bacon I have more guns than my dad has but we live in the country so it may be different. I had a ruger mark 3 22/45 and a Remington model 24 that got stolen along with my dad's 308 luckily we had the other guns in the safe so that's all the guns that were stolen a tool set from my grandpa and my mom's wedding ring were also taken. My dad talked to a friend of his and got me a ruger mark ii 50 year anniversary wich is more accurate than my mark 3 was.

Wow, that's awesome news! 308 is a great caliber to reload for. Hopefully the other guns turn up as well.
I use the rubber grips that cover the backstrap when shooting buffalo bore it really helps the recoil. But when we get dress up I have a set of Cullina grips.

Don't get new grips, just suck up the pain. I have a snub nose 629 pc with the two finger wood grips and it feels like a hammer hits your hand with 44 magnum loads but the grips look so good I can't swap them out.
That is just sweet looking!! Now you got me thinking I need something shorter than my 7.5" Ruger SRH. Since you did show it, how do you like the Taurus 66? I have the 6" version of it and love it. Unfortunately my wife and daughter like it so it's "their" gun now. You have that problem yet ?? 😊
Btw, check out Pachmyer grips. Put a set on my S&W baby chief and turned it into a pussy cat with 158gr FBI loads we had to carry per our department regs.

I don't have that problem YET - my wife isn't opposed to shooting, but doesn't really enjoy it, and the kids are still a little too young. I do foresee having to continually remind the boys that they don't get to inherit my guns until AFTER I die.

I find it quite manageable. You definitely know you're shooting a Magnum, but you can shoot a bunch without hurting yourself. This one has become one of my favorites.
Only downside to this is they didn’t put a full length ejector rod in it but they did in the 2 5/8” PC version. Smh dk what they were thinking there
Fortunately it's never caused me any issues yet.
They should make this in a 357 mag version. i.e. N frame Round butt. It should be pretty easy considering it's just a barrel change and everything else can be reused.

I own 5 44 mags , 3 SW revolvers and 2 Win levers. Have you tried reloading? A 240 GN lead semi wadcutter at 1000 fps has lots of accuracy and authority.
I have never shot a factory 44 Mag or Spl that I can recall. 100% of my loads are my reloads, and 95% are my own cast bullets. In fact, my channel is mostly about casting and reloading.
I have quite a few different molds for casting 4 bullets, but the thing I shoot the most is Skeeter loads which are 250 grn Keith SWCs at 950 fps. As you say - accurate and authoritative.
I've noticed I don't see the webbing on your thumb busted open on either hand from shooting full powered 44 mag loads with those grips they are horrendously notorious for blood letting with those grips or do u shot the week 44 special loads

Those are not wood grips, they are a resin composition and can be easily shaped and polished.

@@LoadsofBacon Yours may be, but mine are cast resin, just like the ones on my Colt 1911. They look like wood but when you file, sand and polish them you will find they are not wood. Cast resin is more durable than wood.

Yes? It’s model #150715. It’s listed as a “Deluxe” just about everywhere, and also TALO many places.
TALO is a wholesale buying coop that was started by wholesalers in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, hence the name. They commission limited editions of firearms from several different manufacturers. It is my understanding that the model 150715 is one that they commissioned from S&W.

Don’t do anything to the grips! They are fine for shooting self defense. Even the best shooters don’t shoot 357 magnum continuous; they shoot and practice with 38 special plus P. Yes, they do shoot 357 ON OCCASION because of the recoil, but there overall favorites is 158 grain 38 special plus P. It’s the same with your 44 magnum. Get used to shooting 44 special, and on occasion the 44 magnum, but 44 special is more than sufficient! Experience over the ego!
I mostly shoot 44 Spl. I did end up replacing the grips with some rubber grips; they aren't as pretty, but they fit MY hand far better and more comfortably than the wood grips, and the shooting experience with them with both Spl and Mag loads is far more enjoyable.
The wood grips, for me, on this particular revolver, are more fashionable, but the rubber grips have proven much more functional.

S&W 629
Take a look at the Ahrends wood grips. www.ahrendsgripsusa.com. These are reasonably priced, good looking and quite ergonomic. I have them on this exact model, no checkering, as well as on an 8 3/8" and a 6" 629. If you find the recoil too stout, I believe that the Hogue grips that com on the S&W 460 and 500 will fit. The frames are much larger but I believe that the round grips are the same as the round grip 629.

Looks like a 2” barrel
You're probably aware, but the barrel length is not just the part sticking out the front of the frame. On a revolver the barrel length is measured from the back of the forcing cone to the end of the muzzle. (On most other firearms the chamber length is also included, but the revolver chamber, in the cylinder, isn't included in the measurement.)

I still wonder why you asked the question at all, considering the Hogue grip on your Model 29.
I'm definitely considering the Hogue, but I'm already familiar with it...I know there's a lot of good stuff out there that I'm currently unaware of. I really enjoy hearing the thoughts and opinions and experiences of others.
My thinking is too practical when it comes to these monster revolvers. Shooting these is not fun, it is hard work, and I dislike the fancy/aestethically pleasing wooden or micarta grips on them.
What ammo have you tried in this 629? I like the Winchester 210 grain Silvertip. That is actually one of the very few - if not the only one - factory loads that I find ideal for self-defense in the .44 Magnum.
I have fun with them, especially shooting specials. The wrong grips definitely distract from the fun.
I haven't shot much in it yet. Everything so far has been K-SWCs in magnum and special, with a couple cylinders of Speer 270 Magnums and Gold Dot specials.
I've never tried the Silver tips, but I've heard wonderful things about them.
Well, what about some 253 grain K-SWC hollow points over 23.5 grains of H110? Have you shot those? Have you?
