      @@SpainonaFork - Another tip, in case your dried beans have been stored for a while, you might want to add a little bit of baking soda to the soaking water. It helps the beans to soften up. Just be sure to rinse them very well before using, so the baking soda will not alter the flavors and textures of your other ingredients.

    You brought back memories of my childhood. My mama always cooked the large Lima Beans with small chunks and shredded pieces of ham. It was delicious and served with her infamous homemade bread and a salad from the garden. Thank you

    Once again, another fabulous recipe. The technical hint of using plain water instead of using vegetable broth to keep from overpowering the flavor of the butter beans is such a good idea. The first house I bought was in a neighborhood that had quite a few older people that lived on excruciating low fixed incomes or retirement pensions. We all shared one newspaper, so we visited each other daily, as we walked a well-read local newspaper to the next reader's house. In my case, I had to walk over to pick up my newspaper. At least once a week, my neighbor gave me a pint of the butter bean soup, that was obviously uncomplicated by many flavors, yet smooth and satisfying. My biggest memory of the soup was how fabulous this soup was in the heat of summer, served chilled with fresh garden herbs as a garnish. By the way, my neighbor made this soup on her wood cook stove.
    Not a problem, but the beginning of this video said, "Happy Friday." 😉

      I doubt anyone has a problem with him saying Friday instead of some other day. He might’ve made a video on a Friday but posted it on a different day, or he made the video ahead of time knowing that it would be Friday when he posted it. Rest assured, no stress needed, you can actually make this Same Dash on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and even… On Thursday. Isn’t it wonderful to have your freedom back you don’t have to do it just on Friday

    My mom always made Brisket with Browned Lima Beans, which I dearly love. She seasoned the brisket with thinly sliced garlic cloves and refrigerated it overnight. The next day she’d chop up a large onion, roughly chunk carrots and quarter or 8th large potatoes. The onions and carrots would be sautéed. The potatoes would go on top and sprinkled with plenty of paprika. The brisket was put on top of the potatoes. The fat and drippings flavors everything underneath. Water was added up the side of the brisket. Cover and cook about 2 hours. Remove the cover and continue cooking 1/2 hour or more. This reduces the liquid and coats the beans and potatoes with a Carmel color. I loved it better on the 2nd or 3rd day because the veggies got softer and browner with each day. When the potato-onion-carrots fell into the gravy it was heavenly! Salt and pepper as desired. Also great with brown spicy mustard. Sometimes I added the mustard into the water instead of S&P.

    I have loved butter beans for over 60 years, but I have always cooked them the same way my parents did, with some ham or bacon. That is delicious, but using fresh vegetables looks equally delicious. I will, as always, switch out the bell pepper with green chile peppers, but the rest looks great. As ever, thank you so much for these recipes.

    One of my fav beans is the large "pocketbook" lima/butter beans in this video. Thanks for another way to cook them. I like to put mine in a pressure cooker so that come of them dissolve into a lovely thick sauce. The texture of these beans is silky.

    I really like this channel a lot- highlighting how the simplest, cheapest dishes can be the most satisfying of all.
    Para mi, I'd cook in a good stock, a tiny pinch of saffron and a squeeze of lemon. Beautiful dish with a good hunk of bread to mop up. Simple and delicious.

    We used to make a simple lima beans dish in London -- soak the beans, etc., and when they were boiled softish we cooked them in bitter and garlic. But I quite like this -- though I wonder about cooking the vegetables quite that long. But they seemed to come out all right.

    Interesting recipe. My mother used to heat canned, precooked lima beans with no extra seasoning. They were tough and not our favorite, but we at them to qualify for desert. 😑

      @Linda Hudson 😆Exactly what happened in my home, too! Lima beans we're always my least favorite because of the texture, but they were always canned. This soup looks delicious so maybe I will have to give the dried beans a shot! (I would always eat mine come also, so I could have dessert)

    Love Butter Beans! I added Kombu to tenderize the beans while cooking. It taste great and it give you some needed iodine and salty taste without table salt. 😊

    The problem with beans is the long cooking time to soften. This applies to other beans too. 1.5 hours like you did. If you want to cut down on the cooking time, use a pressure cooker. That classically reduces it to 1/3 of the time so it'll be done in 30 minutes. If you want to reduce it even further, add a pinch of baking soda to the pressure cooker which reduces it to a third again. So it'll be completely cooked through in 10 minutes instead of the 1.5 hours originally. Hope that's helpful.

    Perfect dish for tough times. Thank you! To save even more energy as gas bills go through the roof, I’m going to pressure cook my soaked butter beans for around 3-4 minutes and add them towards the end of the veggies cooking time. I guess the planet will be a bit happier too!

      I definitely suggest calamari (way bigger and better seasoned than here in the States) and whole roasted pork (somehow "porkier" and less woodsy smoke tasting than here). And, pretty much everything else!

    Do you do any pickled butter beans as a tapas. I don't know the recipe but I think it's olive oil vinegar or lemon juice and garlic of course. I've had this as a tapas and it's one of my favorites.

    Hey ty for the recipe! If i use canned beans for this should i add them after the veggies are cooked or cook it less time?

      Sautee the vegies first, then add in the canned beans and some water and simmer for 10 minutes :) much love

    When using ham: Do you cook the ham from the beginning of the soup, or do you add it after? Sometimes I've had ham get really tough when I've used in soups. Not sure if I'm putting in at the right time. Thanks.

      I would add the ham at the same time as the veggies, because of the liquid as the beans cook, the ham should not get tough :) much love
