    What's not to like with Chinese Elms. They are tolerant of bonsai techniques and if grown outside develop lovely small leaves and great ramification. Clearly they can deal with a hard early summer prune. Nice presentation showing what can be done.

    I've a Chinese Elm a bit bigger than this one that I bought last year. It's not been pruned or repotted for at least two or three years and I'll be working on it soon so both this and your repotting video are coming in handy..

      We thought about but as it is in a heated greenhouse its hard to photograph and it gets moved around so hard to get a static shot over time.

    Just been given a Chinese Elm and I've fallen in love with it. It's bit of a tangled mess. Is it safe to prune and cut back now in late December? This video has given me inspiration.

    Thank you. I would not even know the first step to do for the big tree you shaped. Bravo! You are definitely a Master artist!. One thing I will say is to fix your sound Mic quality. I have all my speakers on high and the computer and your voice is still coming out soft. I would just invest in a clip on Mic or something to allow the sound and your voice to carry louder so your audience can hear you better. I so much thouroughly enjoyed your presentation so very much aside form the volume problem

    I hope the owner watches this video and does the work themself next time. I always find it a shame how people own trees like this but don't experience the satisfaction that comes from working on the tree to improve it. That for me is what keeping bonsai is all about.

      Most known bonsai in Japan are owned by rich ppl who keeps them at their Masters nursery. They don't work on it, they keep it to admire and enjoy when needed.

    Love the video! Thank you for the advice. My only complaint is that it hurt my soul when you cut the bottom branches around 4:14. They would have been so nice for developing more taper!

      It would hardly make any difference now its in a bonsai pot, unless grown out really long and therefore robbing energy from the bits we wanted to leave.

    Just for the record, if it leaves the white fluffy stuff behind they are mealy bugs not scale insects. scale look like a shield and make things that look like "scabs" on the trunks

    I’m curious how much that elm 🌳 was when you purchased it? I know here in the USA 🇺🇸 if I’d had to guess retail at a store online you’d be looking at prob 2.5k-4k. I was actually was gong to purchase a Chinese elm tomorrow for $500 that’s over 30yrs old a real steal imo. Beautiful piece you have!!

      It is a customers tree. Generally prices in the USA are about 3 times higher than in the UK. At least they were when I was last over there.

    I purchased a Chinese Elm bonsai a year ago, and it has grown, then struggled, then bloomed then struggled since. It's leaves keep getting black spots on them, then it drops those...alot of them. Then it buds again and looks good for a bit...then black spot leaves, drop, repeat. It's an indoor, in window, South facing...lot's of sun light Southern California tree. Advise on how to get it stable?

    Do you grow you Chinese elms indoors during the winter? I’m getting my first one is a few days and it gets below freezing where I live. Should I keep it indoors during the winter?

    It looks like there's a hesitancy to clip branches on that customers tree. I feel like that leads to the tree not making the advances its could make in terms of branch structure. Its still beautiful without question. Just looks slightly odd without its clothes on (leaf mass).

    I got a chinese elm that has 2 trunks that emerge from the soil and then converge into 1 trunk a couple inches above the soil. What is this condition called?

    I have an ~12 year chinese elm, which I kept indoors the most part of its life. I didnt care for him very intense the last 2-3 years, but gave him water regulary, so he is okay, but didnt grow very much. Would it make sense to plant him in a large Pot or bucket and let him grow outside for 1-2 years on the balcony ?
