    I've been pruning my chinese elms incorrectly for years now. I didn't kill them, but wondered why I was having trouble with ramification. I didn't always prune only where there was wood. This was very helpful, very clear.

    This is probably the plainest, most essential guide to deciduous in general that I've ever seen and I appreciate it so much. This is elm/beech/zelkova Course 101 on the syllabus. Everyone who wants to prune-and-grow to shape their trees needs to see this.

      Perhaps try an evergreen bonsai. Junipers are more forgiving.

    Thanks for making this video :) Just got my first teeny tiny 12 inches tall Chinese Elm and today was the first time I needed to prune it. Your simple, logical tips were really helpful.

    I'll admit I haven't looked really hard (yet), but I'd love to see you post a video on how to encourage a Chinese Elm's trunk to thicken. I really like the way you do your presentations, too. You aren't "looking down your nose" at all us amateurs and newbies, you're not snobby or authoritarian. Very down-to-earth, folksy and give the impression you're genuinely trying to be helpful without coming off like you're God's gift to the Bonsai world and you're doing the universe a vast favor by imparting your wisdom and knowledge. Thanks a bunch. I've already downloaded several of your videos for ongoing references to augment my growing library of books!

      on any bonsai to thicken the trunk you can plant it in the ground for a while and it will thicken the truck

    Very helpful, I have just purchased my first Chinese elm/ Allee tree and it is about 2' tall and very hairy as you say. I will use these tips to clean it up. I am in the south Florida area and hope my tree does well.
