When you say "American Refrigerator", you may be meaning one thing... But just look online and you'll see that there are hundreds of Brands and sizes available. Lawrence's is about the size of what we call "Apartment Size". About 15-18 cubic feet interior space. House fridges can be that size (again depending on space), but are typically 21-25 cubic feet. Remember if you get a refrigerator with an icemaker you have to have water run to it. So if the flat you rent is not already set up for that your Landlord would have to be okay with you having it done. It is normally just a small water line you can run from a T-junction off the sink's water supply but it would still involve drilling holes in walls or the back of the cabinets to get it to the refrigerator.

Lawrence's fridge is actually the most common style in rental properties (especially apartments) and in older homes. The older ones and standard apartment ones are usually white or black rather than stainless steel though. The double door fridges became popular in homes in the 90s-00s. The style Millie likes, double doors on top and freezer drawer below, is relatively new and not super common. I prefer it myself though and whenever I move somewhere that needs a new fridge, that's what I'll buy. In my area I consider myself lucky to have a double door fridge, they almost always have ice and water in the door itself. But the freezer is so useless. It's so narrow and shallow I can't even store a frozen pizza in there. The kind with the freezer drawer typically has 2 ice makers, one for the door and one for the drawer that can be turned off for extra storage,or turned on in advance of parties. My mom has that kind and it's great. The kind like Lawrence has almost always has the ice maker like his, but no water dispenser anywhere which kinda sucks. But there's always Brita pitchers lol

Always enjoy your reactions! I think part of the reason the “American Refrigerator” has evolved to be so large has to do with our long work hours (most full timers do 40-70 hours per week). Many of us simply don’t have time for daily or multiple trips a week to the market for fresh ingredients, so it’s become habit to bulk buy, the once a 1-2 weeks that we do make it to the stores. It makes it easier to have on hand between the hustle and bustle of commuting, work, school and other activities/commitments.

    • @tinaowens3772

Excellent points! Additionally, many residential areas in UK have shops and houses all on the same streets or just round the corner. If you forget something, you can just pop round, pick up what you need and be back in ten minutes.
In most American suburban communities, zoning laws prohibit having commercial grocery stores, drug stores, etc. in or near residences. That means it's really inefficient to just run to the store for a lime you forgot to buy. You have to turn off anything on the stove, get the car out, drive however far to the nearest supermarket, find a parking space. Go in, get your lime, stand in line, then reverse the whole process to get back home after wasting an hour. That's why we buy in bulk.
Last Christmas I bought 40 lbs of frozen chicken from Costco and could easily get it into the freezer, even with all the other stuff that was there. There's a lot more to that story, but I"ll leave it there.

  • @samshare2146
    @samshare2146 Před 2 lety +1

The type of fridge you describe (desire) at the beginning of the video is called "French door" style refrigerator/freezer. The top part looks like a typical side-by-side with two doors but is only the fridge. This allows all your fridge contents to be closer to eye level, increasing accessibility, and the lack of a center column allows you to put larger/wider items more easily in the fridge (like 16-inch or sheet pizzas). The freezer is actually located in the bottom part with drawers-style doors...though new ones also have french-door style doors.
French-door fridges have been around for a very long time but have only recently become popular...mainly, as a luxury item. Besides seals/insulation and design/maintenance issues in early models, people didn't like the inconvenience of the freezer (and therefore the icemaker) in a "chest" format in the bottom half. While the refrigerator portion can be more convenient, frozen items were no longer at eye level and no longer as easily accessible. Items are often stacked on top of each other necessitating taking everything out on top to get that one item on the bottom that you want. Remember the saying "out of sight, out of mind". People put things in a chest freezer and that item goes to the bottom and is forgotten as things get piled on top...and ends up getting thrown out.
Newer French-door fridges have French-doors for both the fridge and double doors for the freezer sections (double doors instead of drawer style doors, but they are not true French-doors as they have a center column separating the two halves). This solves the inconvenience issue...but further adds to the cost of the item...which brings up...cost.
Cost is the biggest drawback today of a French-door fridge. They cost more than a "traditional" side-by-side or top freezer model of the same size...like 50%+ more. That is why they are more commonly seen in luxury homes and are therefore now associated as a luxury "must-have".
By all means, look into a French-door fridge is you are in need of a new refrigeration unit. Just because they don't work for some people doesn't mean they won't work for you. Try out (imagine) how you will use the fridge...how you will store the things you normally have in your fridge and compare that to your current side-by-side or freezer on top. It might actually work well for you. Get the size that best fits your space and has the features/design that gives you most convenience...and is from a company with high reliability and easy and cheap parts/service. I can't stress this enough. Fridges are a very expensive appliance, both in initial cost and operational cost. You want it to last as long as possible. The primary fridge in my NY estate was installed in 1991 (when we built the house) and is still going strong. It is a built-in 48-inch side-by-side Sub-Zero with icemaker.
Sub-Zero might not be as popular in your neck of the woods...but Europe has some well-known and excellent luxury brands... Gaggenau, Miele, Dacor...does La Cornue do refrigeration?
You can also find good reliability and often a lot more features (like smart and internet connectivity) in brands like Samsung and LG.
One more thing...ice makers/cold water dispensers need a water source to function. If you have a water line running to the area at the back of where the fridge goes, all's well. If not, look into the feasibility of getting that done and the cost of it before purchasing a fridge with those features.
Lastly, the fridge shown in the video (Lawrence's own fridge?) is on the small side for a US home. It is more like an apartment fridge. Just saying because I don't remember being able to easily throw my arm on top of most fridges.
The undercounter fridge/freezer, that was shown as common in the UK, is not common in US homes except for, maybe, luxury homes as accessory cold storage units outside the kitchen (e.g. wet bar). Some people have "portable" mini fridges for the same purpose (like in dorm rooms). They are used to keep a limited quantity of things near-at-hand instead of having to run to the kitchen for every little thing. For example, the primary/master bathroom in my TX home has an undercounter built in fridge (it looks like a regular cabinet) ...because, why not? Who wants to get out of the Jacuzzi whirlpool tub and go all the way to the kitchen to grab a drink?

Over here in Texas we have freezer on top fridge on bottom, freezer on bottom thats a drawer that you pull out like y'all described, and side by side freezer and fridge.
If you hunt, fish, have a garden of veggies and prefer to freeze vs home can, or you have a large family or buy large amounts bulk items at Sam's or Costco then you're likely to have a deep freezer and typically these live in garages.
It's also possible to have an upright freezer that's the same size as your refrigerator which would also probably be in your garage as well but you don't see these too much anymore because they aren't very efficient and warm up way too fast if the power goes out for more than a few hours.

As a fan of the UK TV show 'Escape to the Country' I often play a game called where's the fridge when the real estate agent shows the kitchen.
What Laurence is showing us is a typical apartment (flat) size fridge that is usually 15 to 18 cubic feet. U.S. fridges come in various sizes, freezer on top, freezer on bottom, side-by-side and french-door where the fridge has swing doors and the freezer is a drawer. I have a counter depth french-door at home and a typical but smaller top freezer type in my condo.

Oh yeah there's also an alarm on the fridge you can turn on so that people don't have the fridge open too long or accidentally not shut it.. so it will beep at you til you turn off the alarm or close the doors
I also have a deep freezer for larger items but mostly is used to store the meat from hunting.. so right now it's full of hog and venison and fish..

Holy cow Lawrence has a tiny fridge! Then when you said brits have an EVEN smaller fridge🤯 I honestly was shocked when I seen the under cabinet fridge!! How do British families with multiple children fit everything in there??? So we're a family of 4, and our kitchen fridge is a double door one, and the ice/ water maker is in the front door, and inside there is a second ice maker that makes ice if multiple sizes... so big circle ones, and larger rectangle size. The regular ice size comes out the front ice/ water part. Yes, I do think people in the US like ice! I know our family is obsessed with icy drinks. Then we also have a second fridge downstairs where our bar, and pool table/ gaming area is. That fridge is double door as well, and is basically our drink fridge. That's where I store all the pops, water, beer, bubbly water, gatorade... I guess most people I know have more then 1 fridge so it doesn't seem odd to me to have multiple bigfridges.. I'll keep my fingers crossed 🤞 you'll get your big fridge

His 'fridge' in the video is a small apartment size or 'starter' fridge by American standards.
Our normal fridge is not even a side-by-side fridge any longer.
We would consider a French 3 door fridge standard now. (The one Millie was describing).
We then have 4 doors like I have...36 cubic feet, ice/water through the door, French door top section, under that a full with thin drawer (great for water, pop, juice, sticks of butter, lunch meat, cheeses, and if having a party a great place to store the birthday cake)...this section is also separately temperature controlled from the upper section, I keep it on drinks (34°) so my sodas and water are very cold ...in fact, the ones in the back may get bits of frozen soda/pop in the can.
Finally, the bottom is the pull out freezer with a sliding shelf inside (honestly, my sliding shelf is all Ice Cream in our household...we are addicted to Ice Cream).
Sadly though, that is not enough for us...we have a stand up separate freezer and another refrigerator in our garage.
The refrigerator in the garage is a small, 12 cubic ft, full size Galanze refrigerator...and yes, they are all full.
We buy when on sale to stock up so we use a lot of freezer space and drink space.
And even with the ice cold drink coming out of the fridge, I will still pour it over ice in a glass unless walking out the house to get into the car.

I recently remodeled my kitchen to my dream kitchen in America. Let me start by saying I have a large house (about 4,000 sf) and we opened our formal dining room and glass sunroom with our kitchen so our refrigerator freezer doesn't appear so massive. It is a side by side refrigerator/freezer (which is common in the US) with each unit of comparable size. My refrigerator has roll-out shelves that are wide and deep enough to place two cookie sheets side by side. My freezer is of comparable size and we elected to leave out the small ice maker to allow more room for frozen foods. We placed a separate icemaker under the kitchen island so we never run out of ice, which is very important in the Deep South in the summer. My refrig/freezer is a semi-custom Subzero brand and cost around $4,800. Far from the traditional refrigerator even in the States but I'm in love.

Add to that, chest freezers, which are large boxes (chests) 10, 15 or even twenty cubic feet in capacity, which load and unload from the top. They are slightly more efficient because gravity keeps most of the cold air in when one opens the lid.

just bought a new GE side-by-side fridge this weekend. it was $2000. it's 70" tall and 36" wide and stores a total of just over 25 cu.ft. the best part is the ice maker and filtered water dispenser in the door, so no need to open the door for ice, and also get nice, cool, water...

I have actually two fridge/ freezer combos myself. Both do different things. The one in the garage is a standard top/ bottom style for mostly meat, drinks, and stuff that just needs a ton of space. In the kitchen is a French door style with freezer on bottom. That’s for everyday stuff as it has more room but it’s just easier to use. It’s just easy if you use the fridges in the right way. The one in the kitchen is degree accurate so I can control how cold something is while the one in the garage is pretty general that just gets it cold and not much else. The garage fridge was actually a gift from a old friend that didn’t need it so we got it which was just replaced as the old one was leaking bad but whatever it’s ours now. The ice maker is a pretty standard function just what way it comes out is dependent on the fridge. Some have the tray inside so you scoop it out, others just a button press and cubes come out, and some don’t have ice but it’s dependent on the manufacturer. The big names here that make kitchen appliances are kenmore, General Electric or GE, LG, Viking if you can find them ever, kitchenaid, and thermoking for commercial use. Honestly GE, LG, and possibly kenmore are the more chosen brand as their stuff just lasts. Viking is just impossible to find as they are purely super high end restaurants or just private chefs wanting to blow money for some strong tech. Thermoking is more like converting an entire room into a fridge or freezer as I worked restaurants most of my life with a thermoking fridge and freezer and they get the job done.

Get the fridge that you want, Millie. I have one with two ice makers. One is in the fridge and the other is in the freezer. We use the one in the freezer drawer to have ice when family is coming. Otherwise, we keep it shut off and put frozen veggies in it. We also have a spare fridge in the garage and a small chest freezer.

Like myself, many Americans also have a standalone freezer in the basement as well. Kids are out of waffles? Go downstairs and bring some upstairs to the main kitchen fridge/freezer. Also like to go in on a local butchered cow each year, so always have tons of steaks, burgers, etc in the basement freezer.
Always got to have a second fridge in the garage as well for beer and other refreshments for when hanging outside or cooking out where people bring their own beverage of choice. The garage fridge can be cheap or second hand… just there if you need it. My garage fridge was the one that came with my house I replaced. Simple, old, white, runs kind of loud, but keeps drinks cold.

In the US we do not use ice that much we just put the drinks (cans, bottles) in the fridge so it is cold when we want it. We also usually have another separate freezer (I have 3) as big if not bigger then the entire fridge. The fridge he has is on the smaller side of the scale was well.

Speaking as a Texan American, I was shocked when you mentioned that the refrigerator shown is larger than what y'all have over there normally. The refrigerator that was shown as the typical British refrigerator is the same size as something that most of us here would have in the man cave or a bedroom or office in the house. The size of refrigerator shown in his kitchen is the smaller version of what most Americans would keep in their garage as a secondary refrigerator alongside the deep freeze.
I absolutely love your channel and learning the differences between what y'all have and what we have and what both of us considered normal or abnormal. It really does help break the ignorance because a lot of people wouldn't think that what y'all have over there is any different than what we have here. Not to mention that y'all do this in the most adorable way possible. Much love from Texas. Keep up the great videos! 😊❤️😊❤️😊
Also as a side note have you checked out the refrigerators that talk to you and scan the contents in your refrigerator to let you know what you need to go shopping for? It is eerily intriguing to say the least. Oh and by the way we do love our eyes to keep our drinks cold once they're taken out of the refrigerator IF we have kept them there. Drinks I know here in our home we don't normally put in the refrigerator because it just takes up space that could be used for other things.

His fridge is a transition fridge. Look how much room on top. Other note, The best cold soda. Is mug in freezer ready to use. Soda in fridge. Put ice in frozen mug then cold soda. Mug frosts up, a cold puff of air above a very refreshing cold drink

Many "American" fridges are much larger than this one in Lawrence's video. Also many deliver ice and water through the door-you don't need to open the fridge for either.

Most of my neighbors growing up in PNW had 2 freezers in the garage: one for Costco food and one for meat from hunting (usually deer). It’s pretty common to have a second freezer in the basement/garage.
I live in a small-ish condo and have a refrigerator the same size as Lawrence. It’s from the 1980s and will likely outlive me lol. Definitely small compared to modern refrigerators in the US now.
Going to watch a few times. Get that fridge Millie!

@@davidcosta2244 We don’t have a BJ’s store in the Pacific NW. No Sam’s Club either but we do have Wal-Mart. They’re just not as popular here as Costco.

That fridge is positively tiny. I've got a 6' side by side in kitchen, a wine fridge, a drink fridge, a 6' regular fridge/freezer and a 6' upright deep freezer. Plus 2 of my kids have mini fridges in their rooms.

If you want a fridge with the freezer on the bottom, you should check out the 4-door fridges. I have a Whirlpool 4-door fridge, and thinks it's the best I've ever had. What's nice is that you only need to open half the fridge or freezer to use it, letting in less heat. Has tons of storage space too. I had to get a counter depth fridge due to my kitchen layout, but the fridge is 36 inches wide so still plenty of storage space. Cheers!
