$90,000 WAUKEGAN SUPER TOUCH OPEN
Bertrand Lanes, Waukegan, Illinois, Aug 8-12, 1980
Troup Finds "Super Touch" In Waukegan
Colorful Guppy Troup thwarted Earl Anthony's bid to win his fourth Waukegan title in the $90,000 SuperTouch Open.
Anthony, who prevailed at Bertrand Lanes from 1975-1977, outlasted Troup for the top-seeded position but fell behind by 30 pins in the championship match when Troup opened with five strikes. Anthony pulled back to within nine pins later in the match but a disastrous 4-7-10 split in the ninth frame doomed the PBA's all-time leading money-winner and title-holder as Troup recorded a 245-222 decision.
Troup had earlier defeated Gil Sliker after Sliker beat Tom Baker and Steve Martin during the stepladder finals.

Gupp..You are forevermore the man..
Guppy’s down and in shot was butter.
Earl Anthony was the Best Bowler He was smooth. He was my fans forever.
Thanks Mr. Petraglia for the " Brickyard House" Interpretation [ Van Nest Lanes in The Bronx Ny is a " BrickYard House" Flying backends, and Tough to Carry there. Well Maintained house that Still had Wood alleys and #2 pencil scoring machines back as far as 2003!!
Lol...#2 pencil scoring machines...lol...very nice 👌
Earl said he’s going to bowl 10-12 tournaments a year, and “not be much of a threat” in the 80s. Let’s see...Bowler of the Year in 1981, 1982, and 1983, and his second three peat in winning the PBA National Championship (1981, 1982, 1983). So much for not being a threat.
Here he is playing around third arrow with a plastic ball and getting it to hit like bricks. He was amazing.
@@oldsnwbrdr hell alot of these guys were. Could you imagine them with today's equipment? They'd average 260
Bowlerland Lanes in the Bronx was very tough conditions in the 1980's
Pete& Dick Weber( RIP) Guppy & Kyle Troup are great Father & Son Bowlers. Don & Eugene McCune also Good Father Son Bowlers. The Great Johnny Petraglia & Johnny Petraglia Jr. Also Great. The Great Teta Semiz & Tom Semiz are great Father& Son Bowlers. The Dorin Sisters from NJ are a great Sisters Bowling Team.
@@bobby_c7671 Thanks For the 411. I was not aware That PB3 Had a Son who is An accomplished Bowler Parker is Awesome and I Look forward to seeing his Son Make a Telecast. Is he a Southpaw?
@@louiscsanko3673 Yep! He gets well over 500 rpms on the ball. Hes scary good.
@@louiscsanko3673 Yep! Scary good..hes well over 500 rpm. He has 2 sons who are really good...Justin and Jason.
@@bobby_c7671 Thanks, I look forward to seeing them on the telecasts. 👍
Guppy Troup bowled great from that way outside line. Earl had that one bad ball which cost him any chance to win. Thanks for the video.
Gil Sliker was such a great bowler. If he could have won that first singles title he would have won a lot more.
Guppy Troup may be a distant Relative, as my Mum was also Born In Scotland.
57:39 leading money winner was Wayne Wubb apparently 🤣😆. Who is that guy announcing?
Guppy was playing waay wide there. Much farther outside than what I'm used to seeing for players of that era.
Love the theme music by the Crusaders!
Super Touch was the sponsor of this tournament. Super Touch was the name of that index finger device that four of the five TV finalists used in this tournament. Earl Anthony was the only finalist that didn’t wear a Super Touch device.
veggieoilerfan just another gimmick to sell to bowlers, professionals got paid $2500 to wear it on the show
Bowling is notorious for gizmos and contraptions haha
Scott Schoppert I think 1980 and 1981 were the only two seasons where players used the Super Touch during the television finals. I would guess the incentive money was discontinued after 1981. I remember seeing a Super Touch for sale on eBay one time. I think the packaging said that it was supposed to have the same benefits as a full wrist support. I don’t know just how effectively the Super Touch worked. However I would imagine the incentive money was a big reason that a considerable number of players were using the product from 1980-81.
I had several. I kept snapping them in two!
Mike Day Besides the fact that the Super Touch kept breaking on you, did the thing actually work well for you?
Homefield Bowl in Yonkers was known as a Lefty House
So was that place on the Island, I saw Screwy Louie the pot southpaw roll 44 consecutive strikes there
Steve Martin didn't deserve that pocket 7 pin!!! Bowling can be a cruel Sport!!!
Guppy Troup did have some fortunate breaks in both of his matches
Andrew Phillips Kyle Troop has had some fortunate breaks in some of his matches
Everyone needs breaks to win at that level.
Tom Baker won 10 times on the regular tour.
Steve Martin won 7 times on the regular tour.
Wild and crazy guy!
Johnny has a 212 average and didn't make the show. 8 year Olds average that today due to cheater balls and easy lane conditions. Today's bowling sucks.
Wild and crazy guy!
