GOODBYE TO THE ORANGE AND GREEN - Jim Jarratt

  • In 1974 the colourful old Halifax Corporation buses were finally replaced by the comparatively drab green of the new 'Metro' fleet. The old 'corpy' buses had been long known for their highly distinctive orange and green paint job, the only other livery of this kind being found on Glasgows' buses, perhaps not a coincidence considering that Geoff Hilditch, the long time manager of the Halifax buses, had come to them from Glasgow. When they finally left the steep and winding Pennine roads of the Halifax area it was a sad day. So sad in fact, that I wrote this song, which despite poetic license expresses how ordinary folk felt about the change!

What a truly wonderful song. I have played it over and over again and very apt for those of us who come from Halifax and preserve and restore Halifax Buses. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you so much for this. It was lovely to see my father’ s name on the side of a bus again ( GG Hilditch). He so loved the orange green and cream livery though did very subtly alter it.

Don't mention it! I am honoured! This video has gone much further than I ever imagined it would. I have a Halifax clippies halifax coat-of-arms badge on me hat! The song dates from the 70s when I gigged it all round the local folk circuit. Best wishes. Jim.

I remember late turns on Hubberton/Steep Lane half hour sat in the middle of no where. 5 trips after tea worst late turn on the list, but still great days, just the sound of a PD2 going up to Steep Lane, brilliant.

My brother Kelvyn Waites (Bus No 35) just alerted me to this video. He used to work "On the busses" as an Inspector. I moved to Canada in 1996 and the thing I missed most was the colorful busses they have in England.

Fantastic job Jim, I was told growing up that the Halifax Bus was the only bus in England in three colours, I can remember them in Illingworth from the early 50s. An Excellent Tribute to the Old Halifax Buses, I have put the link on my Facebook page (hope you do not mind) so that friends in the US can see a little bit of history from Halifax and Gods County. Well done again Jim......The Halifax Bus was actually 3 colours (Orange, Cream and Green) I grow up with this old faithful Halifax bus, like most Halifax services they were owned by the Town and sold off, a Town and its people let down again by its Council and National Government, if its a success sell it off and let the rich make money from it, never mind the ordinary people.

Once upon a time bus liveries were mostly very attractive. However, in 1972 it all changed-NBC all buses to be-puke green or puce pink with white coaches. Then in this area of the West Riding- which was abolished-all the liveries went- that West Yorkshire WY rose in white on a cream and green bus was at best quite dire. Huddersfield was red and cream- Bradford blue and cream and Leeds was mostly green and I never saw the Wakefield buses-all painted in this new horrible corporate crap livery.
