What a remarkable film. I live in Halifax and it’s the first time I’ve seen some of those old buildings from years gone by. Amazing to see a fountain on fountain street! The music was beautiful made me sad to see so much history architecture and buildings gone to be replaced often by nothing. I felt I could see my old family somewhere in those tough streets. Thanks so much for creating and sharing this.
My mother was born in Halifax and lived in clover Hill terrace. Many a great time while on holiday there. There was a family by the name of fennelly lived across from my grandparents house.

My late mother came from Halifax we used to go there 3 times a year from when I was about 9 until 14, I haven’t been since 1972 and not seen any of my family there since then. I want to go back soon before it’s too late to visit where she came from and take my son also remember many happy times. I’m sure it’s completely different now! Thank you for the video
Excellent video, perfect music. I grew up in Siddal, Halifax, yet knew the town like the back of my hand by the time I moved to Europe at age 22. It somehow hurts my heart to see these modern changes and to see how empty the town appears now. Thank you for sharing this, I really appreciate it.
My Grandad lived in Siddal back in the 80s on Back hold drive. He's gone now but the memories are always there. I was born and raised in Halifax (and Brighouse). I moved away but visit every year. Halifax is a wonderful place full of nostalgia and beauty
Halifax should be restored as much as possible to its former glory.It has so much potential and would be a huge tourist destination if done in the correct manner.
I love this video of Halifax, albeit with a little sadness due to the dramatic changes. I was born in Sheffield which has a lot in common with Halifax, although it is larger. I am quite old and live oversea now so cannot visit UK cities any more. With old age I do not have the energy to do so. These video help to fill the gap for me. I enjoy them so much.
Loved the video loved the old photo's and picture's it's just a shame that the inbreads in charge in the council offices seem to think it's a good idea to take away a towns heritage destroy old beautiful buildings to make a place took worse that ever and then call it modernization it's great to see videos like this it help to know what life was like
In total agreement. For instance, covering up the cobbles in Piece Hall. I traveled to visit family in Halifax early 2020, took a drive around the town. I was shocked to find the council had sold off the Hall. Also shocked to see they'd built a monstrosity where the old supermarket was. I'm sure the councils thinking is, " let's build cheap modern buildings, let the listed buildings go to hell". To the point they have to be torn down to build more monstrosities. Its a victorian town, famous for selling cloth, it should be looked after for future generations.
@@Ethericrose totally agree with you but I've not been back for years I think it was 2012 last time but everytime I went back there was always something new it feels like it's hanging on but it's a slow death for the town and the council can't wait for it to die even trying to help it on its way

Hi Joshua - yes you are right, i think the area i should of taken was further down this street, just at the bend. the actual old building on the corner left, has dormer windows in the old photo - but they altered these to flat roof windows from what i believe ;-)
Error 'Market Street' with the line of cars down the middle of the road (4.40) is actually Old Market and the today view is Market Street with Old Market in the distance to the left where the maroon shop facia is. Fountain Street so called because of the fountain situated at Wards End! It was later moved to King Cross but road widening caused it to be moved again to Spring Edge in 1932. Amazing these old photos survived, honestly i think with advancements and modern inventions to make our lives easier, everywhere just looks cluttered now. London is worse. I think I prefer a lot of places the way they looked before. Most streets looked wider and more spacious. There's a certain calm and peacefulness to these old photos. Life looked much slower paced back then.

On the latest ones i've added the dates, but i never thought to add them on these early ones! - most range from 1900 to 1950s - and some a little older -🙃 pre 1900s
Great photos!! Old Halifax could look quiet grim but had a charm to it . Halifax today still is grim when you walk around the half empty town streets, at least we kept a fair bit of the old architecture . The new build stuff look out of place and tacky, doubt any of it will be here in 20 years nevermind a 100 odd like the old stuff.
I remember walking down Che Guevara Boulevard in Halifax town centre before the town planners added a pedestrian only zone. Town centre is so different from those beautiful days all those years ago. I can’t even see T’oussainf D’Louvetre Street anymore.
No actually it's correct, that is lee bridge - if you look at the right side, you'll see the same buildings still standing today (that was part of dean clough) which is now the fitness gym (i used to go to that gym!)

Just noticed this too. You can see the Burton's which is now McDonald's on Old Market, all the buildings are the same today by the looks of things.
