  • Lock & Co are the oldest hat makers in The World, and have been connected with the James Bond franchise from the very beginning, when they provided Sean Connery with his trilby in Dr No. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of 007 on film, they have produced a James Bond Collection in collaboration with EON Productions. I chat to Lock & Co’s Managing Director Ben Dalrymple and General Manager, Mike Hagon, about the choices they made for the collection. I also bend the ear of Meg Simmonds, Head of Archives at EON, about their longstanding relationship with Lock. And we also have a fun chin wag with GreyFoxBlog’s David Evans, and the legend that is Peter Brooker from From Tailors With Love about the sartorial side of Bond.

Got my "James" today (well, a few days ago but I put it on for the first time today). I'm VERY impressed by the quality of this hat and, even moreso, by the feel of it. I can't say I've owned a lot of hats in over half a century of living, but I have had my share of them and NEVER had one feel so bespoke (even though it wasn't). Well worth the $$$ (between the rise in exchange rates and the shipping this thing cost twice what they said six months ago). The last hat I'll ever buy in my life, but I truly thank you for this video or I never would have known about it.

Lock & Co are the best Hatters in he World, and the quality shines through. Have you visited their shop in London? If not, it is definitely worth the pilgrimage! And, who knows, you might find another "last hat"- The temptation might be too great! Thanks, again, for your kind comments. It really means a lot. Warmest regards- Blair

@@thebondvivant8030Visiting the mother country is on my bucket list, and as I'm getting to the point where such a list is more and more likely to be done it may well happen. For sure most of what I would be doing would be visiting sites that are Bond related (even though I know things have changed greatly). Even being able to see the "MI6" building (and, yes, I know) would be really, really wonderful for me. Although if I had the money the one place I would REALLY like to visit is Piz Gloria (while Sean will always be "my" Bond, OHMSS I still think is the best Bond movie ever made).

Blair, wonderful video! Nailed the accent!
So after all this time, we get confirmation that the Dr. No hat is green! At least Bond wears more obviously brown trilbies in the three following films. Lock's green Wetherby tribly looks awfully close in colour.
Great insights! I would love to see the Captain Nash trilby that makes it's way through so many scenes in From Russia with Love. It's such a classic Bond hat.

Thanks for highlighting this Blair, I wasn't aware of this collaboration. Another great video. Having a hat a hat from Lock & Co has always been on my bucket list and this now looks like perfect year to make it happen.
I'd love an actual Bond hat but my issue with his choices has always been that the smaller brimmed hats like Bonds always look too small on me. (I'm very tall).
    Those Top Hats where stunning!
I'm glad you made the comment (dig 😉) at Orlebar Brown and the 007 logo. As an piece of advertising the logo is a work of genius but I don't want it on everything, especially items Bond himself would use or wear. At least not prominently. Many times I've seen things that I quite like but have been put off by the branding. Especially replicas, it's not a real replica if it has a "007" logo on it in my opinion.
Lock & Co are such a part of British history, Bond history and fashion history and I've always felt that in owning a Lock hat you become a part of that.
    Thanks again 👍👍.

@@thebondvivant8030 Well I'd like to actually try on the Stoke Poges to see what it would look like on me. If it looked ok then definitely that one, although I prefer the band on yours. (you rock it by the way). I also like the look of the 60th anniversary cap to be released in October. Lock & Co have several other caps non Bond related that I am interested in.
I actually acquired a Lock bowler second hand a long time ago but over time I seem to have out grown it. I still can't bring myself to part with it. Does your head shrink when you get old? If so there is still hope. lol.

Hi Mike. Thanks for the message. The collection is being rolled out in 3 phases- first phase, out now, is the Auric, The Oddjob and the Vincenzo. When the summer hits in earnest, they will release phase two- the Stoke Connery Golfing hat, and the Andrea white straw hat from The Man With The Golden Gun. The James, and the 60 blue newsboy cap, are being released on the actual 60th birthday of Bond on Film, in October.

@@thebondvivant8030 You as well - and thanks for your videos. They are very entertaining, even if you are just a kid . I envy all the stuff you get to touch and handle. While I'm not a fan of Moore's Bond (although I did like Roger as an actor) and the latest incarnation - well, we could get into quite a discussion about it but let's just say that Craig's Bond is the FIRST Bond to ever fail and fail repeatedly at his missions - but as someone who grew up with Connery and the novels I will always have a special place in my heart for both him as well as the mother country. Keep up the good work as I know you will and I'll keep watching.

Great video, I cant understand why they used a completely different hat band on the Goldfinger golf trilby, your own version is much more screen accurate, where did you get that hat, also, which polo shirt are you wearing under your Slazenger heritage jumper?

    • @thebondvivant8030
      @thebondvivant8030  Před rokem +1

Hi Alan. Many thanks for your support! The hat I'm wearing is the original hat that Lock made to pay homage to the hat Connery wore in the golfing scene. It was called the Stoke Park, later renamed the Palm Spring. It sold out very quickly. And the shirt I'm wearing is actually an Orlebar Brown Felix polo shirt in Grey Melange, if memory serves! The new grey polo in N Peal's 60th Anniversary collection is a worthy substitute, if you can't find the Felix, but it does run to £165, so maybe hit eBay to find a Felix!
