I saw this at the Met. That they adapted it to something as identifiable as the mob run Las Vegas gave it a greater impact than renaissance Italy could. It was the singularly most brilliant production of anything I'd seen on stage, in cinema or music. The experience will last me all my life.
Thank you for all your support and comment ❤️
Beczala, once again, brilliant. Thank you.
I have seen the full performance and I LOVE IT
Braaavoooo !! Brille comme le soleil !! Magnifique !!🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Odlot....
I have been an opera fan since the late fifties and seen and heard all the greats of the Golden Era. Normally I am a purist but I did like the "Look" of this this Rigoletto.
Gran bell'interprete e bella voce !!!!
Piotr Beczala is the best... no one its better... so great... I love it so much to hear his voice

Seeing your beautiful comments here in my youtube channel makes me so happy and putting smile in the face of my fans is another great moment,I'm grateful to have you as one of my favorites fans 🌹❣️
This production was absolutely hilarious I loved it!!!! Favorite moment: when Monterone first appears on the stage
I am adding another BRAVO to you, Piotr!!! You are the Rat Pack Leader!!!
Complimenti ! Molto,molto bello !
Grande tenore e grande Polacco !👍😘🎶💞🌹💪
I enjoyed the broadcast. I'm a casual opera fan, and this was my first time viewing a production of Rigoletto. I found some of the roles confusing in a modern context, and it's hard to make a curse a plausible concern for a character in a 1960 setting, but on the whole this production worked for me. Some lovely performances here.
This was absolutely amazing, saw it today :)
...bravissimo Piotr !!!!....
We saw the whole production and I think overall it really worked. I asked the attendees around me... 2 said the Vegas setting didn't work; another 2 said it made total sense.
1) How much fun is it for a classically trained member of the Metropolitan Opera Ballet Troupe to play the role of a Las Vegas showgirl?
2) Opera was a step up from street theatre, but it was still a medium of mass entertainment. If you take out the fun, you diminsih the entertainment value. Bravo, MO!
I couldn't agree more with you, you putted it perfectly. People enjoy sucking the fun out of everything.
The Vegas setting was utterly ridiculous ! How could Gilda be a virginal, pure ,untouched, young thing in such an environment ?The whole Gangster Mob, Rat Pack scenario was just too far fetched and gimmicky for a libretto like Rigoletto's that has to be set in the morals and values of it's day and the social, and class distinctions. of it's times.I dislike updates of Traviata and Boheme for the same reason. The Bohemian lifestyle that was distinctive and unique in the libretto set in the 1900's becomes common place in a modern setting. And as for Violetta's being a social outcast who could ruin the Germont's family reputation? Really who has cared since "Sex And The Single Girl "how many men an unmarried young woman has bedded before marriage, The contacts she has made would actually be quite advantages in propelling her forward socially. These updating, devices may be fun and visually exciting but they can distort and weaken the dramatic, tension of the Libretto's!
@@joemiller6975 1, virginial, pure, untouched young things exist even in such environments, believe it or not.
2, yeah, like the so called "morality of the Great American Traditional Family" of the 50s perhaps?
3, Just because it ain't kings and queens, doesn't mean that there are not social and class distinctions. Did you see what Rigolleto was wearing? Hardly a fashion icon.
4, Just because something works better in its time (because of course it does, it's a product of its own time), it doesn't mean they don't work at all in different settings. The message is universal and timeless. You can put as many interpretations as you like, that doesn't change the fact that these all are just love stories just with a different background and story. And that's the core of those operas, not so much the setting. If you think that the problem of Rigolleto is that the Duke wears a tux, that's hardly a problem. The setting works, whether you agree or not.
5, Classic stuff are good, variety and new ideas are good too. Don't demonize modernity and different takes, especially if it attracts more people at the opera.
6, if you have other issues with other operas, take them elsewhere, this is Rigolleto we're talking about.
@@theovlach WE live in an age where a Megan Markle can marry into the Royal Family be accepted and then decide to reject IT! Grace Kelly was the best thing that ever happened to Monaco or it's Prince in the 50'S and she was a gal who got around quite a bit! Updating has to be used with intelligence and taste not just an " Oh I have a great and novel idea for a new staging" approach. The Lucia with Damrau using an automatic weapon and grabbing a quickie with Edgardo was not good, Gilda excecuted mob style is not credible, Violetta with all Paris at her feet being shunned by a provincial family from the sticks and giving a dam in the modern 2oth Century is not credible ! That is my point! Everyone has their opinion, and their own taste and I am not opposed to fun at all. The western ranch style Setting of Elixir of Love was a delight, but please let the bizarre and outrageous, productions like that dreadful S&M Tosca from a few seasons back cease,! Intelligence and credibility must be elements of a new production and staging of an Opera . The Rigoletto had good moments but ridiculous and preposterous , ones also .But then much of Opera can be preposterous and ridiculous anyway ,which is why care must be taken when it is presented! That is my case and I stick to it!

ALLUCINANTE!!! ORRIBILE SCENA E COSTUMI!!!
excelente interpretación
Have a seat folks. This seems to work.
I'm actually quite shocked at all the negative comments. I think the 1960s Las Vegas setting is a very clever way to update this opera for a new audience. The director, designers, and singers put a lot of research and effort into presenting a fresh and creative look at a classic. I found this production incredibly engaging and exciting!

We saw the Met livecast of this at a local theater. 1. Indeed, in an interview, Željko Lučić said his Rigoletto was intended to be a Don Rickles type: funny guy but mean humor. 2. Why does the sheik curse "poor" Rigoletto? Because Rigoletto just made an unbelievably nasty joke about the sheik's daughter (who lost her 'innocence'). It's a surprisingly cruel jab considering Rigoletto personally knows what it's like to be a devoted father trying to protect his daughter's innocence.
He is clear and fantastic!
Goddamit! I like this! And lo, the Duke IS sleazy, debauched character. He was so in the 19th century and he is in the 21st century. But a lovable Duca he is. Piotr, you're brilliant!
Whats up with the set and costumes?
drugi po Kiepurze rewelacja
Rigoletto is my favorite opera and I loved this production. So much better than McVicar's horrible production. Beczala is a great duke.
So is Lloyd Robertson, hes from Canada

Not only is the staging absurd. The English 'subs' on the seatbacks have been altered.
See this weekend's NYT 2-9-13. Example from "Questa o quella"
My sights are set on a swingin’ girl,
So hop on, baby, let’s take that whirl!
It reminds me of the old La Traviata.
Met used to be an inovator in its approach to classic operatic works in terms of refreshing and original stage productions (remember Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades and Evgeny Onegin, or Il Trittico?). This particular one, together with the previous Un Ballo is just over the top kitsch, fluffy and trivial.
Oy vey people don't knock the entire production because a little group of show girls puts you off...
The problem of Opera today is ONLY the singers.
it is set in vegas in the 1960's and yes he was a jerk
A bit of a bummer. I thought the Vegas setting would have worked well for this, but the actual direction is pretty boring. Perhaps we should get these very creative and visionary directors and team them up with NEW composers of NEW OPERAS rather than trying to reinvent old ones?
Distracting? Well, those dancers are absolutely Luscious. Very difficult to keep my eyes off them.
Actually I'm looking forward to it. Rigoletto is one opera that can withstand a modern setting...I think. But I am willing to watch it before I judge it.
Did I mention the Luscious dancers?

Looks like a elvis Presley show
The staging is cheesy, but I'm not opposed to the idea of Rigoletto being updated to 1960's Vegas. It's just that this particular direction isn't very effective, at least in this scene.
There are only so many ways you can reiterate 16th century Mantua. Sometimes it's good to change things up!
Poor Beczala.
No funciona, senores.
Viva Villazon, he is coming for you again. :)
I love the staging, what I'm not too wild about is Piotr Beczala's singing, anyway I'm not very familiar with him, is he at his best here?
Not really, is a dress rehearsal so he is not using 100% of his voice. This is another version in an actual performance czcams.com/video/h0BcmtzwKmA/video.html
Sorry but I don´t like the "new" staging. It is Opera, not a Broadway musical.
bokdante ohh yes
But i think the staging does fit the theme of the opera. Yes it might be a bit much but I personally like the aesthetic.
A rat pack Regoltto
Opera and Broadway musicals are both over the top and generally lacking subtlety. I'm not talking about the finer points of performances, which is another matter, but come on --- when Rigoletto sings that his delicate flower of a daughter is his whole world, you know that means she's going to be killed. Would be the same things on General Hospital, actually.
In the 1980's you could see almost exactly this staging in virtually every medium-sized German Stadttheater. Hello! It's 2013! When the MET tries to be "modern" it's just plain embarassing.
horrible staging! i couldn´t concentrate on the music because of the weird looks of all this ......i mean the whole evening was spoiled by it
Ma canta bene però
Ma non da tenore
Fa pena come Grigolo Meli Sartori Kaufmann e compagnia bella.
@@eugeniogentili1048 kaufmann fa pena ? ...... mah !
@@misterx980 Si e' ingolato ha una brutta voce.

I do not like this production. But great singers.
Nothing more pathetic than submit to a full tenor in operatic stage pretending singing with microphone ... The theatrical appeal can be fatal when the reality is showing that sings forced and strained. Thinking that his compatriot Kiepura, at the Met in the 30s, criticized him for too expansive and almost clownish! ...
Scheisse.
OMG Horrible!
Completely forgettable.
Horrible
Clownery. No respecr to the score.
i like the idea of the new concept, but the tenor is horrible
Thats....awful
Stagings like this should be forbidden... absolutely horrible!
