A nice selection of books Jason, but personally my favourite is Harry Tomlinson's 'The Complete Book of Bonsai'.
But a lot of bonsai enthusiasts are not only interested in bonsai trees, but also propagation of plants. This is where I must recommend 'The RHS Propagating Plants' book. It covers a wide selection of trees and plants and for me who sees a seed and thinks to myself 'could I grow that?' is just a perfect addition.
Well put together video with the books among your trees.

Thanks for your recommendation Gavin. Would you count that as a beginner book, or perhaps more intermediate? 😊

@@TheBonsaiGarden Personally I would say it could cover both. Much like the books that you covered, there's plenty of follow along photos and it's easy to start with the simple things and then move up to things like grafting and air-layering.

Thanks Xav. It’s a Peter Warren book. The top two are very similar, but I believe the one I picked is probably a bit more recent.

An Identification book of trees is usefull too, in the beginning I didn't know a beech from a sycamore or even knew what a holyoak was! I thank Tony's Bonsai for that education. The one I use is an old readers digest one. Keep growing.xx

Great selection. Your #1 choice, I got about 6 or 7 years ago and I still think it's excellent. From memory it's authored by Peter Warren although his name doesn't appear on the cover. I bet he's miffed about that!

Yeah that’s right, Peter Warren was involved. It’s a great book.

Many people seem to see Peter Chan as a marmite character. I personally love him. He's made bonsai accessible to so many, completely demystified it. He shows that while trees can be high quality and indulged as much as you like be it soil, methods etc, ultimately there are many other, simpler and effective ways to grow and style trees. His pedigree can't really be faulted.

Thanks for sharing! The number 1 on your list is the latest one I've read, very clear indeed. The one before that was modern bonsai practice, not exactly beginner-friendly, I must say.

Well researched and presented, as are all your videos. I think a beginner can't go wrong with any of the books you selected. My first book, you ask? How about Bonsai: Culture and Care of Miniature Trees, published by Sunset Publishers. I bought it in 1972 and paid $1.95 US. It was the only book I could find at the time. I still have it.

Well, cool, I managed to pick out a very good DK book my very first time! I'm working on growing some Gambel's oaks from seed, and the book has been helpful to give me an idea of where things will be going in a few years. The first tip I picked up, at just the right time to hear it? GROW THEM for a few years, before making any attempts to miniaturize them. That's something I might have screwed up right off the bat had I not read this book. Then I watched some of your videos, and saw how the trunk development is sped up considerably by letting them grow in the ground first. Right now, they're the smallest of babies, and mortality over the winter will probably be fierce, but I'm excited to watch them pop up from the soil and start developing their first two leaves before winter strikes in full force.
Thanks so much for your videos, I'm really enjoying the way you explain things!

Must be our command of the language 😂
I couldn’t recommend a book I haven’t read myself, which means books available here in the UK, though I believe Colin Lewis is at least an honorary American, living in Maine.
I’d love to get my hands on those John Naka books but they are rarer than unicorn poop, and the ones available on eBay are falling to pieces, and asking £700. Puts them beyond my budget.

@@TheBonsaiGarden Yes indeed Jason, our signed copies of Joh Naka's books that belonged to the KW bonsai club disappeared long ago, never to be seen again. Books are interesting, I have my favorites that I never get bored of, many are from the UK!
