    This has been such an enlightening video. I've been researching for months now, on a daily basis, and this is THE number one explanation on "how to" and "why", all wrapped up in a nutshell. Everyone new to bonsai, like myself, should watch this video. Well done man....and thank you! đŸ™đŸŒ

    As a novice I’ve watched many videos on Bonsai. I learned more from this particular one than all the others. Many give the hows but this was absolutely the best explanation of why and that to me is the most important. Thank you. Also great merchandise.

    This is an almost well-kept secret. Your comments about soil make perfect sense to me. My desire is to DEVELOP large bonsai. I am not in the position to collect large stock in the wild. So I plant my trees in oversize containers. However, I am continuing to use granite grit as my soil. Although I water frequently, I now realize I need more organic soil. I have long suspected this but everything I read or see and hear online is rocky, well-draining soil. Thank you.

    By far the best video I’ve seen. As a beginner it’s hard to figure out what actually needs to be done, with the wealth of information online it’s easy to get confused, pruning and styling is everywhere on CZcams etc but not many development videos that really give an understanding of how this all works. My first 5 trees were all in bonsai pots, I recently bought my first starter tree which is a lovely juniper in a plastic pot. After seeing this video I can now understand and envision how my tree wil develop. It’s also made me realise that one of my trees in a bonsai pot may need to go into a bigger plastic container as it’s struggling to grow foliage. Keep up the good workđŸ‘ŒđŸ»

    This was an important class for my development. So I have two questions. Using course sand between 1-2 mm in size should give my development trees stretch out the roots while getting lots of oxygen. Is this what you mean by course sand? I'm also planning to follow the teachings of Peter Chan and place them in a pond plant planter. So in your discussion of pruning yes or no? You had a branch to the right, a branch to the left, a branch to the right and the two branches that threaten to form a swell. So you showed removing the right branch but wouldn't it actually be the left branch you remove? Then you would have a right, left, right, left development instead of a right, left, right, right development.

    Hello and thank your for this very informative video!
    I have a few simple questions about the soil mix. You talked about using more organic materials in the soil mix for trees in development.
    What are the best materials to use and in wich percentage? Are there big differences between soils for deciduous species and conifers?
    Do I just have to use drainage materials like pumice/akadama in smaller percentage in proportion to a regular bonsai refinement mix or I dont really need them in a development soil mix?

    • @BonsaiEn
      @BonsaiEn  Pƙed 3 lety +1

      Hi Cosimo, When it comes to development most organic mix's are fine, i usually just recommend getting a regular potting mix from your local garden center and sieving out the really fine material. You can also add something like perlite for extra drainage or scoria. When it comes do deciduous and conifers there isnt much difference in the development stage, they both like lots of drainage.

    Does the rule of 2 apply if you have 2 branches right at the bottom of the trunk? Surely that will just thicken the base quicker, 1 of my cork elms I'm growing and developing at the moment has exactly that, I've taken any doubles off any distance up the tree but I've left them as abit of an experiment.

  • @maazansari6143
    @maazansari6143 Pƙed 2 měsĂci +1

    Hi! Love your videos, they go from 0 to 10 covering all minute details in a proper flow. Thankyou 😬
    I have one query regarding pine, so by rule of 2 we have to keep 2 branch otherwise it will cause swelling, but during trunk development can we keep all the candles despite of them causing swelling as main focus is at trunk and not on refining?

    • @BonsaiEn
      @BonsaiEn  Pƙed 2 měsĂci

      In development you have to keep in mind where your tree will eventually end up. i always say in development leave as much growth on as possible where it wont cause any issues. if you have multiple shoots in one place that will cause an issue so prune to avoid the swelling. There are also a lot of trees that become apically dominant so if the tree isn't a species that can be completely trunk chopped to restart branching then you will have to also make sure you balance the tree to ensure you don't lose the lower growth you will eventually fall back on.
