Single BEST Bonsai video on the internet!
Answered almost all of my questions in one shot.
Well done, mate!
Thanks brother!
I agree !!
I second that!
This has been such an enlightening video. I've been researching for months now, on a daily basis, and this is THE number one explanation on "how to" and "why", all wrapped up in a nutshell. Everyone new to bonsai, like myself, should watch this video. Well done man....and thank you! đđŒ
I fully agree
As a novice Iâve watched many videos on Bonsai. I learned more from this particular one than all the others. Many give the hows but this was absolutely the best explanation of why and that to me is the most important. Thank you. Also great merchandise.
Excellent, that has just stopped me in my tracks and set me off on the correct course. Thank you, so easy, letâs go.
This has been one of the best all round explanations on the âhowâ of bonsai!!!! Thank you đ
This is an almost well-kept secret. Your comments about soil make perfect sense to me. My desire is to DEVELOP large bonsai. I am not in the position to collect large stock in the wild. So I plant my trees in oversize containers. However, I am continuing to use granite grit as my soil. Although I water frequently, I now realize I need more organic soil. I have long suspected this but everything I read or see and hear online is rocky, well-draining soil. Thank you.
By far the best video Iâve seen. As a beginner itâs hard to figure out what actually needs to be done, with the wealth of information online itâs easy to get confused, pruning and styling is everywhere on CZcams etc but not many development videos that really give an understanding of how this all works. My first 5 trees were all in bonsai pots, I recently bought my first starter tree which is a lovely juniper in a plastic pot. After seeing this video I can now understand and envision how my tree wil develop. Itâs also made me realise that one of my trees in a bonsai pot may need to go into a bigger plastic container as itâs struggling to grow foliage. Keep up the good workđđ»
Every beginners should watch this...
THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE ON BONSAI!
I agree I found you through your pod cast and this is hands down the best lesson in bonsai Iâve found yet
Mate,....this is THE best concise how to video on Bonsai that i have ever come across. Please keep making these kind of videos...thank you from the bottom of my heart
Very well done video. Lots of genuine information and guidance for beginners put in simple words. Keep going mate. Your doing a great jobđ
Of all the bonsai channels this has been the best at explaining what and why to do. My new favorite! Thank you!
Thank you very much :)
Your videos are excellent! Iâve been learning Bonsai for a couple of years (mainly from reading and CZcams) and your videos really âfill inâ the holes that you can get in your knowledge using those methods.
I love it you have stuff on Australian Natives as well. We have so many beautiful trees in Australia itâs sad to be only using a few traditional Japanese species.
Hi Dene, Thank you for the kind words. We believe out teaching style does set us apart from the crowd and there will be plenty more on natives to come! it sounds like you might enjoy one of our new courses which are a super charged version of our youtube content and are cheaper then a set of scissors! you can check them out here if you are interested. bonsai-en.shop/collections/master-class-series
Excellent explanation!thanks a lot!
You are welcome!
This was by far, the best video on development I have seen!! Very well organized and presented! Thank you very much!! Very easy to understand and has saved my brand new Chinese Elm from a possible mis-step in growing mediums. I was about to pot up this very thin little sapling into a 1 gal pot with bonsai mix!! I know better now and it all makes sense. Thank you!!
Wow! Now this is what i needed! I feel like i actually know what i need to do now! Thank you so much!!
I love this man. Keep doing you! Never quit!
Just found you and love it! I am a newbie. I start with Juniper. It's still in the pot I bought it in and was looking forward to spring to put in a Bonsai pot. You have changed my mind. Thank you for the great info. I learned so much today
Welcome! its great to hear you are heading in the right direction now with your tree. This is the one lesson i wish i had of learnt earlier.
Excellent!
Excellent video mate, excellent instructional video
I have really enjoyed this website! I wished that I had watched yours first versus some others. I feel that you are concise in what you are showing us to do with our trees. I donât feel that you were going all over the place, but you were very focused on the specifics of what we need to do. Thank you so much!
thanks Josh. The distinction between development and refinement is very very helpful đđ
Love you... you just explained it so scientifically... genius...!!
That's such a clear explanation very informative ,thank you !
Awesome video with great info, prob one of the best videos out on YT Land! Thanks!
Wow, what a great video. And thank you for showing me the steps i need to follow, both in young versus grown bonsais, and focusing from the bottom up.

Glad it was helpful!
Another video jam packed with basics for beginners, thanks Josh.
This is a master class.
Details, complete and professional. My big thank. đ
Many thanks for these videos, these are great for beginners like me, very well put and thoroughly explained. I have a very little old gold juniper and I am looking forward to develop it into a bigger, thicker tree. Cheers!
I wish I saw this video when I first started out. Most bonsai videos don't emphasize development enough. My oldest bonsai is also my smallest........derp.
Really good mate! Cheers
The best tutorials on Bonsai I have ever seenđđ
GREAT JOB....thank you!!!
Very informative and liked the way you delivered it to us. Thank you.
Wow. This was so informative. Perfect video.
Thank you
Great video, thanks for sharing!
In English upland woods we have large "bonsai" growing naturally. Poor soil and windswept, on sheer rock faces in temperate rainforests. Stunted and gnarly, leaning away from the prevailing wind. A beautiful sight.
Great informative video mate. Thank you. Although I already knew this, I still learnt some good lessons in terms of timing and development. It brings some understanding to all the bits in-between the beginning and the end result. Cheers
So useful mate, wish I had watched your stuff 4Yrs ago
Woaah man I'm a beginner bonsai enthusiast and this videos solved most of my questions, even better than some books I got.

So much knowledge shared in just one video.. excellent! Subscribed !
This deserves more views.
Great video, very thorough. Thank you đđœđȘŽ
Thanks!
Thanks for this. At what stage can you start developing nebari into the design that I want? I'm trying to aim for a weblike root system that's visible on the surface, then eventually elevate it so part of those roots are exposed so it looks like that part of the soil had eroded away.
Love the way you explain đ
Great Video ! Thanks !
Thank you Sr.
Thank you for your clear explanation. Very few chsnnels I have come across discussing the thickening of the trunk explsin it in such detail.
Looking forward to listening to the podcast.
Hate to advertise a different channel but you may appreciate this video as well (assuming you haven't already learned all you need to know in the 5 months since this comment haha)

You got it!
@@BonsaiEn I am watching this a second time and I have to say, Josh you might not be a drawing artist but you are certainly a Bonsai Artist. Many of my trees are in the early stages and from this it is time to do some wiring! Learned more this time then 5 months ago!
Very informative for starting and developing bonsai
What you explain gets deep inside the head. That's an art either. Very well explained.
Great video. Nice and simple.
it is the best and most honest teaching I have ever seen. Thank you very much. Best regards, Helen Chen
Great information
Excellent explanations! New to bonsai, about 10 months and have unfortunately killed 4 of my plants that I could have avoided had I found this video sooner. Apparently I have tried to do too many things at one time.

Thanks for watching
More fig tree growers should pay close attention to what youâre saying here. đ€
Hi man! I got a little Juniper bonsai of about 3 or 4 inchs tall for te first time in my life and I'm pretty thrilled and looking foward about it. I'm from Quebec Canada where the winters are pretty rudes and I'd really appreciate to have some advises about the dormance stance to make sure it sees it through his very cold seasons. Thanks I like your stuff!
Very very helpful teaching
Glad to hear that
Just getting into bonsai and I'm loving your videos, I was wondering what kind of soil you would recommend for this stage?
Thoroughly enjoyed your presentation. Just wondering if the information on fertilization applies to all types of trees. For example, should I use a high nitrogen fertilizer for acid loving plants during development?
Excellent info. And the merchandise designs are dope. I appreciate that I chose what size coffee mug. Iâm weirdly picky about that.
The more coffee the better right? I personally use the bigger one.
More like this
This was an important class for my development. So I have two questions. Using course sand between 1-2 mm in size should give my development trees stretch out the roots while getting lots of oxygen. Is this what you mean by course sand? I'm also planning to follow the teachings of Peter Chan and place them in a pond plant planter. So in your discussion of pruning yes or no? You had a branch to the right, a branch to the left, a branch to the right and the two branches that threaten to form a swell. So you showed removing the right branch but wouldn't it actually be the left branch you remove? Then you would have a right, left, right, left development instead of a right, left, right, right development.
Hello and thank your for this very informative video!
I have a few simple questions about the soil mix. You talked about using more organic materials in the soil mix for trees in development.
What are the best materials to use and in wich percentage? Are there big differences between soils for deciduous species and conifers?
Do I just have to use drainage materials like pumice/akadama in smaller percentage in proportion to a regular bonsai refinement mix or I dont really need them in a development soil mix?
Hi Cosimo, When it comes to development most organic mix's are fine, i usually just recommend getting a regular potting mix from your local garden center and sieving out the really fine material. You can also add something like perlite for extra drainage or scoria. When it comes do deciduous and conifers there isnt much difference in the development stage, they both like lots of drainage.
Nice tutorial buddy...
Thank you! Cheers!
Does the rule of 2 apply if you have 2 branches right at the bottom of the trunk? Surely that will just thicken the base quicker, 1 of my cork elms I'm growing and developing at the moment has exactly that, I've taken any doubles off any distance up the tree but I've left them as abit of an experiment.
Hi! Love your videos, they go from 0 to 10 covering all minute details in a proper flow. Thankyou đŹ
I have one query regarding pine, so by rule of 2 we have to keep 2 branch otherwise it will cause swelling, but during trunk development can we keep all the candles despite of them causing swelling as main focus is at trunk and not on refining?
In development you have to keep in mind where your tree will eventually end up. i always say in development leave as much growth on as possible where it wont cause any issues. if you have multiple shoots in one place that will cause an issue so prune to avoid the swelling. There are also a lot of trees that become apically dominant so if the tree isn't a species that can be completely trunk chopped to restart branching then you will have to also make sure you balance the tree to ensure you don't lose the lower growth you will eventually fall back on.
Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Poland :)
Question: So understanding you is it then advisable to use an uea based (foliar) food because this contains 27 + 15 + 12 + Sp in the large pot with organic substrate with small particles? I still have this available but the values are so ridiculously high that i wonder if this is somehow suitable to water the developing trees with.
@bonsai-en incredible video thank you! What is your ratio for organic soil for development?
