It’s time for another carwow electric car range test!
We’ve got the new Tesla Model 3 Long Range Performance going up against the new entry-level Model 3 Standard Range Plus and the Polestar 2!
All three cars will start with a fully charged battery, and they’re going head-to-head on laps of the M25 in London to see which goes the furthest!
When you just look at the stats, it seems like it’ll be a walk over for the Long Range Performance, given it has a claimed range of 352 miles, compared to the 278 and 292 miles of the Standard Range Plus and Polestar 2 respectively.
But will it play out like that?! Or will their claimed ranges vary wildly in the real world, just like we've seen in our previous EV range tests? There’s only one way to find out… Let’s GO!

I would like to see a similar test with the Porsche taycan turbo s vs Audi rs e-tron gt vs Tesla model s
Interesting
I'm sure it will come once they can arrange to have all 3 at the same time.

Tesla would definitely win but up would be cool to compare
@@domtdoodar99 true in terms of range there is no doubt that Tesla model S would win
I swear Matt is the reason I'm watching these vides. This guy is a great reviewer and funny as hell! Thank you Matt.

For those living in Europe:
Tesla Model 3 SR+ - 137 Wh/km
Tesla Model 3 Perf - 167 Wh/km
Polestar 2 - 198 Wh/km
So basically the teslas is more efficient with their battery consumption
@@MajorWTech Great conclusion

For the Polestar 2, 292 miles is the claimed range for the 19" non-Performance Pack. You obviously drove the Performance Pack, whose claimed range is 275 miles WLTP. That would bring this test to 72% of claimed range, not 68%
Alright Mr volvo salesman
I love these range test videos. I've seen all of them and they're so interesting to see the individual cars results afterwards.
Matt: I would buy the entry version
Also Matt: Pre orders the Tesla model s plaid + 😂
He forgot the "if i were a poor pleb"
Was the s in this comparison?🤔
@@kentonian No just the Polstar and Tesla Modle 3 Standard Plus and Tesla Modle 3 Performanace.
@@jacksonbangs6603 it was a rhetorical question
The "new" China made SR+ has a slightly bigger battery and more performance, but it's also heavier. I wonder how that one would compare...
For those who uses metric and want to know how far these cars went:
Tesla Model 3 Long Range Performance 286.1 Miles = 460,43 Km
Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus 218.6 Miles = 351,80 Km
Polestar 2 197.1 Miles = 317,20 Km
First of all, METRIC is the world wide standard, it should atleast be included in the video from the beginning.
Second, I didn't want to watch the video, I just wanted the numbers.
Thank you for doing the work for me.
From the number alone you can see Tesla is still the strong player, however I still prefer the Polestar 2 .
Wish they had a model 3 dual motor, it would still be quicker then the polestar and 3k less than it. Also 13k less than the performance they tested and would have 100 miles/160km more range.
@@larryspiller15 they did have the dual motor one
@@bigbadbear2962 no. They had the dual motor performance which is less efficient and 13k more.
Been waiting for another one of these range videos for 6 months. Thanks and keep them coming. Range and efficiency is the biggest factor buying an electric vehicle

Love these vids Matt!!
Please continue these comparisons. It helps to know the actual range of the vehicle since the range that actually matters is on the hwy. City range won't affect most people since they can charge at home.
Love that tests. This channel is always geting better and better. Congratulations carwow matt and crew

tesla satnav is hopeless, cant see what speed i'm doing and navigating the menus is overly complicated. Their drivetrain is by far the best but infotainment is way behind. I am a model3 owner.....great car to drive but it has faults.....HUD would be so much better than looking left to the tiny displays that i need my glasses on to read....i can never tell if i'm indicating either. Don't know why they wont have a screen that shows analogue instruments for us dinosaurs that have made the leap! lol then don't get me started on the quality which is straight up 1978 British Leyland on a friday afternoon after everyone has been to the pub.....
Great video - helping me decide whether a SR+ would be sufficient and after watching this I think the answer is probably yes. Surprised it did more than the polestar
Those tests are very entertaining. Thanks ☺️ Mat
Another brilliant "consumer advice" video - I always find these EV real-world range tests really interesting... especially to see the "what-happens-when-it-dies" moment and also the % range vs claimed range (always going to be lower than "laboratory-tested" WLTP...!)

You know what’d be great? Metric conversions in these practicality tests! Bit of a struggle constantly going back and forth between the videos and Google :D
Metric ftw
1:46 lol the truck in the background looks like its carrying AMR21 F1 ^^
Tesla really needs a hud, maybe a projector one. Won't ruin the mininalist look but will be very useful
So true. At least the basic ones like speed and range.
I wouldn’t get a model 3 because of it not having a dashboard and everything being on the central screen. If it had a HUD I wouldn’t care about no dash and I’d get one. It’s such an easy fix that would open up the car to be so much better
Is it possible to get aftermarket ones?
Would be a good paid option for them to offer.
@@BoomChing I’ve seen after market dashboard screens but not HUD’s. Maybe someone has made them I don’t know
I love these tests so much, fascinating and useful information.
The Polestar showed 260 range at start but went 197.1 miles. That’s a loss of 24% on the estimated range. The M3P showed 307 range at start and went 286 miles. That’s a loss of only 7%. Huge difference.
Ya I’m confused on how Matt did his test with the claim- range of 350+ miles?
@@slin4013 Matts quoted ranges were the “official” WLTP published ranges. My figures were comparing the actual 100% charged ranges displayed by the car at the start of the test compared to the actual range achieved.
Driven at motorway speeds which reduces the range.
The Tesla adertised range in Europe is "WLTP" The car software displays the American EPA range estimate with adjustments from the battery management software (+- 10 miles). The actual range is heavily dependant on temperature and speed. To get the EPA range estimate in the SR+ you need to be doing ~ 220Wh/Mi which is driving Ms Daisy.... Especially with temperatures below 20C. The battery performs best with 40-50C
@@davidearl4022 and having that much konsumption to - 36 kw/h 100 Miles is a little much
I have owned my Tesla Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor and I love it. Best car ever. Also, you can switch any option with voice commands without having to mess about the menus.
Best car ever. If you want to pay luxury car price for a car with quality like a Lada Samara. Except the Lada does not look like a dead fish in the front. And with the Lada you dont have to wait forever for it to charge when on roadtrips. And the battery power in the Tesla slowly dies upon you, year by year it gets worse, decreasing the range. Tesla fanboys only "love it" because they are fools and don´t understand cars. 99.9% are environmentalists who think they can "change the world". Except battery powered cars are not really that great for the environment because it needs huge amounts of metals and the batteries can not be recycled in an easy way today. Also, the electricity needs to be clean for it to be of any benefit at all. Most probably are not, depending on where you live of course
@@thoos192 I wonder what will happen if these new 'synthetic' fuels (non polluting) are successful. It may change
the metrics of electric vs petrol , re environmentally competitive....
@@thoos192 it doesn't really matter how the electricity is produced as electric is more efficient
T Ö lol imagine being this triggered over someone liking their own car. The rabid anti-tesla crowd has gotten worse than the fanboys at this point.
Why do you keep faffing around in the menus to get the rated range? Just use the energy consumption tab to show the correct range based on your actual usage. Its available through 1 press or a voice command of "show energy consumption"
They're not even your cars.
Voice commands don't work that well
to be fair the energy consumption graph range isnt like the battery level range (its adaptive) so probably wouldnt be the best comparison
@@Zarphag the energy graph is the best way to check remaining range. Why people focus on the guessometer is beyond me.
I was hoping someone already commented on this!! Wow..... what noobs lol.
The beauty of your demonstration allowed me to fast-forward to the end and see the results, thanks!
Been waiting for this for such a long time
It seems like there is enough space on Tesla screen to show both, battery percentage and remain mile range. That switch every time is killing me 🤣
Because you're not supposed to keep switching between the two settings lol. Percentage is far better after a couple of days of getting used to it.
That's a preference setting. Once you decide which works better for you (miles remaining or battery % left) you never change it. Same with the steering column, you set it once and the car remembers it in your driver's profile, never need to change it. Oh, the horribly-difficult life of being a car reviewer, where you have to adjust all the settings while driving!
@@tavi_chocochip Tesla has a built in consumption/energy-app that they should have checked out in this video tbh.
@@davidepalmieri7809 I prefer miles/kilometers. At least I know exactly how far I’m going to go. What’s better about percentage
@@JoshTheFrosch07 Right, I should have worded the comment better, as its a preference setting. I like percentage more because estimated kilometers aren't always accurate, and in a trip you can/should watch the range from the energy tab. You'll agree with me that repeatedly showing the driver struggling to change the setting while driving is a clear jab to make it look like using the display is dangerous, when every owner literally sets it once based on their own preferences and then forgets about it!
Hey Matt I love how your getting more into EV’s. It’s educating the public into hopefully looking out for the future of the planet. I feel like you should have included a NIO and Lucid Motors vehicle to compare in this type of distance race. Love the videos, keep it up.
You can’t get either of those cars though
Good test this one, i liked it. Good job Mat (and the crew)! 👍

Finally the comparison we all been waiting for
i love these range test videos
The polestar is not on the latest update. I have a Polestar 2 and the lowest energy consumption I got was 23.9kWh/100mi. I average ~28-29kWh/100mi. Aside from the paint, my car is exactly like the one in the video (Snow/Performance Package). The latest update also improved the DC fast charging rate. Not trying to say the Polestar is better, as I already know the Model 3 is more efficient. Just wanted to let others know that the Polestar has improved with the update
You should do a test once out of lockdown with plug in hybrids to see how far they can go and MPG.
MAT : Thanks for being our friendly "grocery & school-run" cartest CARWOWER!
Always a pleasure to watch. 😀
Wrong definition of a heat pump. A heat pump is a reverse AC. Takes heat from environment and puts into a cabin against the natural concentration gradient. Heat scavenging has nothing to do with the heat pump but it is an additional feature of the octovalve system in the model 3.
He's finally tired of ending up in Manchester at 11 pm and decided to drive around London instead
Great video, as usual, with the right amount of good humor...
You should do a video testing all the electric cars on the market, for EMFs driver and passengers seats, variating the several electric devices like electric seats and such... I think it would be very interesting and useful for the general public to know this information, and who are the brands that shilds better their cars...

Easier to push it to the next one, yeah
I think Tesla is the only real choice of the car is the daily driver you must count on.
@@cristianmihai1744 not even close to the same argument
Tesla is a no brainer.
That was nicely done. I have the Standard Range Plus Model 3 and it works very well, but I do wonder if having the bigger battery would be worth the cost and the weight. I recognize that the performance would increase, but I am always on the verge of getting into trouble the SR+ due to its acceleration and speed as it is. Since mine is the pre-heat pump early 2020 Model 3, using your 79% estimate, we would get about 198 miles; which feels pretty realistic. I tend to charge to about 85 or 90% every two to three days after driving about 120 to 140 miles.
Hi mate. Just out of interest how much does it cost you to charge from a low battery to 80%
For those in US who are confused on the claimed mileage at first (including me). US uses EPA range while UK uses WLTP range which may make it looks like they have misused Model 3 LR range for model 3 Performance range.
Hi Matt,
Another excellent video.
Wife is hooked on your Tesla videos, and yesterday she placed an order for the entry level Model 3.
I guess it was the influence of this video, and the wonderful video of your mum's M3.
Wife went for white exterior, and white interior. Also the nicer proper allow wheels.
Thanks, keep making great videos.
would have been even better if you added the non-performance long range.
21 miles difference between the Tesla 2 and Polestar. With the new OTA update and standard wheels on the Polestar my guess is nothing would be between them range wise with the Tesla winning on the charge speed front. Polestar is a nicer place to be and on standard suspension more comfortable. For me Model LR if you can tolerate the looks and build quality and sizeable additional cost, otherwise the Polestar is the better value proposition.
Finally I was waiting for this video 🤩
This was a great test. Thanks Matt.
Hello from Australia. Man i wish i drove around M25 at least 1 loop when i used to live there.
Hey Mat! Love the videos, can you please do more of these “how far will they go” videos for electric cars?
Every time Mat... "I'm gonna drive it until it dies! Right, it's dead, now I'm gonna drive it to the charger... Wait, it won't let me! D'oh!" :D
He doesn't drive petrol cars until they die. Do they leave you stranded when empty? Of course they do.
@@Nickbaldeagle02 but I mean, there are more petrol/Diesel filling stations and they are much quicker, though I do think petrol economy tests would be pretty useful.
I like how this time Mat is pushing the Tesla instead of last time where he just sat in the driver's seat 😂

Nice comment thanks. When it’s a Tesla it’s usually myself, Richard Symons. (This, and drag comparisons etc). See our own YT channel if want more EV content. 👍
Carwow should write range of vehicles in metric system too.
It's a pity that the Polestar used does not have the latest SW update, where they improved the range somewhat.
Yeah, noticed that.
@@davidkerr4103 Totally agree, I just installed it actually and there is a noticeable difference.
I was also frankly irritated they optioned the Polestar - to the tune of 5k - with the 20 inch alloys, not that standard 19.
The ' performance pack' in the Polestar doesn't actually offer any extra performance - it offers about 12-18 miles DECREASE in range in the tests I've watched online switching between the 20 inch alloy options you get with the 5k extras, versus the standard 19's.
All that being said, the basic Tesla would still have had a better range - but not by much.
Maybe next time they can get the Polestar to tow a caravan or something while doing the test, or fill the boot with lead bars. 🙄
What about the dual motor, non-performance model 3? Curious to see how it stacks up.
Love the range tests!
I think the the Model 3 Long Range is the sweet spot, especially if you get the acceleration boost. Goldilocks on price and performance between the SR+ and Performance with the best range and the reassurance of all wheel drive (like the M3 performance).
Yeah. Was disappointed they didn't have one because it would of beat the polestar by 100 miles and still been quicker accelerating and 3k less.
You can't get 100% of the advertised/expected range when you're doing all motorway miles. The estimated range is based on a mixed bag of driving, so of course it isn't reachable on a motorway.
They did some city driving , very little though
@@v_isforvictory9366 Plenty of people do get the EPA range, some even more. It just requires more in town driving at lower average speeds.
Of course tests like this are still important, getting well more than 250miles of range is more than enough for cross country drives
@@stinger15au I agree it's fine to compare cars against each other, but to complain that they aren't reaching their highest possible range number isn't. It's like complaining that a car won't achieve its best 0-60 time when it's raining or snowing or you're facing a 100mph head wind.
Taycan exceeds it's rating almost every time.
@@kamallb4650 I doubt that very much.

There's a much simpler way to check the range on the Tesla, just view the Energy screen and it'll show you the range and efficiency. No faff. More accurate too. Plus if you're using sat-nav, it'll show the expected range on arrival, helpful for planning charge stops on long journeys.
It's just not more accurate, it's a real estimate. The range showed near battery icon is a static number that doesn't change depending on weather, driving, hills etc. They should have showed the Energy screen in this video tbh. :/
True.
Also, not what the video intended, which is: look how inconvenient everything is on a Tesla, oh there's no instrument cluster, gotta keep tilting your head like an idiot, nobody's ever been able to get over that (Mini Cooper peeps?) and the screen is too bright because of course we're not mentioning the night mode, and I can't adjust the wheel position without going into the super-complicated menus but let's not point out that the wheel position is stored in the driver profile and no sane driver ever adjusts the wheel position while driving on the motorway, oh my days, the Polestar 2 (thanks for sponsoring us, btw) has so much nicer interior!
Hey Carwow and Mat, have you raced the cameracars yet? thanks!
That needs to be done
Are they not all skoda estates?
Regarding the percentage and range swapping you can have the range displayed by the battery and then you can have the energy graph open to see the percentage. Still a bit cumbersome but it's easier anyway.
