      Why, thank you. You're too kind. And I don't believe it for a minute :). That little bit took around a half hour just to get to that point. Not a practiced musician, clearly.

    Here's this week's video - Making musical instruments using drinking straws, an offshoot from research for my recent sound related videos. I show how to make reeds, explain how they work and then make a straw trombone and straw trumpet - and wow you with my playing talent :).

      Isn't it mislabeling these a bit to call them a trombone and trumpet? You use a mouthpiece to buzz on those instruments, while reed instruments have... well, reeds.

      The explanation is a little long, and hard to do without diagrams, in a comment so here's a link to a good explanation newt.phys.unsw.edu.au/jw/flutes.v.clarinets.html (skip down to the section called "Air motion animations"). You'll then wonder why it keeps going and that's explained in the parent page here newt.phys.unsw.edu.au/jw/fluteacoustics.html (your blowing into it keeps adding the energy.)
      I don't have the sources anymore for where I got my description for the reeds.

    I read about a guy that invented a refrigeration method using sound. It was apparently so effective that instead of benefiting everyone with it he sold it to the military. Is there a simple way to demonstrate what he invented?

    with the end of the straw, you can make a high pitch sound from buzzing on the straw. try poking holes into it and it can make a trumpet flute highbred.

    If a person doesn't have a dowel handy to cut the holes, sealing one end and filling it with water, then freezing, would give a solid platform to cut against. Takes more time but should work!

      Actually he might have been referring to my music playing. And the dowel was a little bit looser than I'd have liked and made it prone to making too big a cut; your ice trick would have worked better.

    1st mistake Trombones and Trumpets don't use reeds, 2nd mistake they need a bell, 3rd mistake they can play both high and low, 4th mistake trumpets have only 3 valves, it's not a recorder. But overall cool

      @Chrisasas Před 8 lety +3

      +Josh Ramirez 1st wow aren't you observant, 2nd they don't need a bell, all the bell does is amplify,3rd trumpets and trombones can play high and low, but trumpets can play higher, 4th trumpets can have 4 valves. but overall cool.

  • @Oinikis
    @Oinikis Před 10 lety

    well, that was more like flute or clarinet to be exact. trumpet is a bundler of tubes, with valves, to alternate the paths. it has 3 valves with 3 loops. when button is not pressed, air goes trhoug the loop, when you press it it goes straight. i was forced to play trumpet for 7 years in my early days. permanent trauma.

    • @RimstarOrg
      @RimstarOrg  Před 10 lety

      Yeah, I guess more like a clarinet. A flute doesn't have a reed. I know that only because of my research when I tried to make a flute too out of a straw but didn't succeed.

    • @Oinikis
      @Oinikis Před 10 lety

      RimstarOrg well, but clarinets have external valves to close eternal holes, unlike flute with fingers. but this would be clasified as wooden instrument (saxophones are wooden instruments, even thou made out of brass). the trauma haunts me.

    HHAAA !! a Evil grandparent will send a link to grandkids ..hhhheee..do it on April 1st ,,even better !! Do people still use a wide blade of grass between thumbs and blow for a whistle anymore !! I'm from a pre-plastic generation,,but still a kid at heart now that the grands are big enough to use tools and be reasonable safe with skill learning projects on my summer list of things to do - whirlygigs to make and a garden to grow classes with granny ,,good for all us kids

      It isn't easy. I had to try a few different types of straws. Try collecting them from different coffee shops, shopping mall food courts,... You need one where the two parts where you cut it to blow on don't separate too much. It takes a little experimenting.
