Is The Roland TD9 Still Worth Buying?

  • The TD9 came out in 2008, is it still worth buying?
    There are 4 variations of the kits and 2 module versions:
    TD9S
    TD9SX
    (Released in 2008)
    TD9K2
    TD9KX2
    (2011: Updated module and better kick-pad)
    I almost bought the TD9-KX2 once, it's a great drumset, I also like the TD9-SX. I wouldn't spend more than $1500 on either one though (no matter how many upgrades it has) above that price I'd buy a TD15KV, a TD25, or possibly a Alesis Strike. I still think the td9 is worth buying, just don't dump your life savings on one, remember it's 10 years old.

    Great video. BTW - for learners, the TD-9 is terrific. It is the only module that Roland ever made that has the "scope" function to show how your time is lining up across all the instruments in the kit on each beat, and the partials within a beat.

    Was nervous to watch this because i just picked up a td9kx2 myself. But to my surprise i was relieved! I got my set barely used for 800 bucks. Went straight to guitar center and picked up a set of iron cobra double pedals and im loving the kit so far. Glad to know i got such a good deal on this. Ive been looking at getting a kit for the past 6 months and when i came across this one i couldnt pass it up. Like your videos man i just subscribed!

    I just bought my first drumset. It's a second hand TD-9 and I couldn't be happier. I spent 1000 € including shipping, bass drum pedal and hi-hat stand. It looks like the TD-9 KX2 but it has a KD-8 with the rubber surface. I was worried it could sound a bit awkward or just not real enough since it's a decade old already, but hell no, after doing all the important settings it feels and sounds so intuitive. The way to an upgrade concerning the model is totally open, the pads are great, the cymbals are still high tier and it looks fantastic (in my opinion). I could spend around 500 € for a TD 17 module or save up to 2 k for a TD 27 upgrade pack and the rest of the kit wouldn't fall behind. But for now I am saving up to a bigger snare pad and a ride. Thanks 65 Drums, you really helped in all those decisions with your ton of vids and knowledge :D

    I bought the TD 9SX back in 2008 and have upgraded it beyond the KX2 and have put millions of miles on it. Ive had to replace the cymbals but still use it every day with Superior and it still works perfect! I love it and wouldn't trade it for anything.

    I really like the TD-9. I bought a used on off eBay from Japan about 6 mos. ago for about $350 to swap out with my TD-6V (used it for 10 years). Over the years (thanks to eBay) I've upgraded all my drums to mesh heads so now I have 4 PDX-8's for Toms and a PD-125 on a separate stand for my snare. Still have and love the single cymbal hi-hat and have 3 other cymbals. I managed to update the TD-9 to V2 (giving me 50 'extra' drum kits) and all is good in my music room 💖 🇨🇦

    What I like about older Roland Kits is that you can buy extra hardware at a cheaper price for your newer TD-Sound Modules, although some have mentioned not so cheap on resale. I kept my TD-12 Sound Module which I still love (just sold my TD-10 Kit a couple of months ago & I miss that Sound Module too) even though I have the TD-25 which doesn't have a lot of extra trigger connections, plus I hated when Roland went to that molded connector for the triggers, which is why I held on to my TD-12 Sound Module that uses the standard cable connections. So older used resale of Roland kits are sometimes a cheaper alternative to build your own mini super kit without emptying your bank account. Thanks for your videos Justin.

    I've had the TD 9sx since it came out on 2008. 10 years on and about 10-15 hours playing on it a week, it's still amazing. The bass drum pad is a little dented and the hi hat can be a bit weird on the odd occasion but, I honestly cant believe how well it has survived.

    Justin you are an absolute diamond. As a beginner i have been looking for a decent kit for my budget. Was all set for an Alesis Surge or similar but with misgivings sbout the overall quality. After watching this I searched used listings and found a TD9sx (branded TD9kv in the UK) with a Roland PM 10 monitor for £650 !!!!. To put that in perspective its £50 cheaper than the Alesos Command is retailing for over here. Im now the proud owner. Great job man thank you. I bought a TD-9SX a little over six years ago in just about mint condition, with pedal, for $1K He had to get rid of it. His wife was pissed that he bought it and he wanted to just unload it. Desperation paid off for me! I love the thing. It's an awesome kit and I haven't even reached it's limits!! I love it. I bought my own amps. I use three, two each for stage and one for monitor.

  • @McGuinty2
    @McGuinty2 Před 6 lety +1

    I just wanted to add that there exist 1.0 versions of the K2 and KX2. I'm not sure when these were released but I bought my TD-9KX in mid-2010. It comes with the KD-8 kick (which isn't all that bad and is more durable than the KD-9), the same snare and toms as the KX2, a CY-12R/C for the ride which is three zone with the bell trigger, and the CY-5/FD-8 combo for the hi hat. I'd highly recommend the VH-11 upgrade if you can find one for a good price (mine was half of retail price and in very good shape), as well as populating the AUX (tom) and CRASH2 ports as soon as you can afford to. My original snare is working well as a floor tom now.
    Also don't dismiss the version 1 of the TD-9 drum module if you can find it for cheap, because if you pay shipping to Roland plus about 50 bucks, they will upgrade it to version 2 for you (and ship it back on their dime). The upgrade includes 40-some new kits, 6 user-defined kit slots (vs. a single measly slot in version 1), presets for additional pads such as the CY-12C and CY-13R that I've added to my kit, and the ability to play MP3 files from a USB stick instead of just WAV files on the 1st version. There was a period of time after Roland released the version 2 module that they were selling an upgrade kit for about $80 through music stores that had the version 2 software on a USB stick, that would install the upgrade and then delete the files from the stick as copy protection. Those kits are out of production now but it's about the same price to ship your module to Roland and let them do it anyway.

  • @MartinOcando
    @MartinOcando Před 5 lety +6

    You missed one important feature about the TD-9 that neither the TD-4, TD-11, TD-15, or even the TD-25 have, and is a MIDI in port with percussion set functionality, which is a really big deal if you plan to add a few more pads or cymbals to your drumset. I got a TD-9 for $185 and an Alesis Trigger IO for 70$, so for 255$ I have a great module with almost 20 inputs.
    And for improved sounds, the v-expressions bundles are highly recommended.

    Can somebody help me, i used to have a td9 module and it had this feature where you would play to the metronome and if you weren't in time then it wouldn't make any sound
    I have tried to google it to find out what this was called as i want to know whether it is available on the td11 modules but i can't find anything to do with it... this was such a good feature and i was expecting it to be more widely covered
    Does anyone here know what the feature is and whether the td11 module has it?

    I am in the process of doing an A to E conversation my current module I am using is a Roland TD6V. I have no intentions to use any of the internal sounds of any module now or in the future I will strictly be using VST's that being said is there any advantage at all to upgrade the module to a TD 9 or TD 11 etc??? I heard maybe the hi hat won't trigger intermediate openings on the TD6V , is this true ?

  • @afterglow-podcast
    @afterglow-podcast Před 4 lety

    I'm a big fan of the TD-9 V2 module. It's the module I use now, upgraded from my TD-6V. My original kit was a TD-6KV that I added a CY-12 to. Over the years I got another PD-85 for a floor tom and a couple of PDX-6 pads for toms, a KD-120 I lucked into for only 100 dollars, swapped a PD-8 pad that was used for hi-hats with a CY-5 and the TD-9 V2. This year I just got a PD-105 I'm gonna use for my snare and swap out one of my PDX-6 toms with the PD-85 snare I have now, and I also hope to swap my two CY-8 pads with CY-12s. If I am lucky maybe next year I can get a VH-11 h-hat with a Iron Cobra stand, and than MAYBE a larger MDS-10 rack and use my old PDX-6 pads as rototoms slaved into the older TD-6V drum module I have.

    I'm of the belief that the TD9-2 is the best budget module out there. Most run used under 300, the MIDI support allows to add plenty of pads via a slave module, there's USB support to play from if you want, and the sounds hold up pretty well.

    Actually, you CAN just go and download a file and upgrade the TD-9. That's what I did. Roland wanted 100 dollars for the upgrade file so a lot of people were pissed and somebody uploaded it online.
    Its a minor upgrade with some improved samples mostly for the snares and it doubles the number of kits you can save.
    Good luck finding the site thought, that was a long time ago. You can try using waybackmachine, sometimes it will archive these kind of things. I might still have the file, but I'm not sure, I'd have to check my drives.

      Well the biggest upgrade, or better say redemption of original Roland's screw up is the MP3 playability. I was shocked when I plugged my flash drive full of music mp3 to play along and found out it just supports WAV. Of course back then I thought all the module's processing power went in to the drum sounds, but when I found out that simple firmware upgrade enables mp3 capability, which was in the module technically, I was disappointed in Roland.

      TD-9 great value, V2.0 upgrade is worth getting if yours is a version 1.0. Buying a used TM-2 /SPD-S and connecting via 5pin midi cable and running audio into the mix in port allows you to trigger user samples and layer sounds to get more mileage out of setup. You will have to do some basic midi editing to connect the devices, plenty of Y.T guides to help anyone who might get stuck.

    Hi Justin would you rather buy a used TD9, a new TD11K, a new Alesis Crimson or a new Yamaha dtx532K? For me it's important the realistic Yamaha Hi-hat and the 3zone snare, but Alesis Crimson "giant pads" also attracts me. I don't really consider Roland for my budget (1000 Euros) because i think a td11K don't really worth it's cost (nearly 950 Euros). Thanks for the Help

  • @demonocusmetalocus3558

    Fun fact ,the td 9 was the 1st roland drum module to use the horrible cable snake and the td 4 was the 2nd. The td 9 originally came with 50 drum kits but later on they put out a usb stick upgrade you could buy for 50 bucks that increased the td9 to 99 kits ,you can literally use any usb stick and if you know where to look you can get this upgrade for free.
    The td 9 is a pretty nice module but i really hate the cable snake,the cable lengths are too short so you have to buy extension cables if you want to be able to move stuff where you want and if someone steps on a cable at a gig you have to replace the entire cable snake.
    I started out with the td9 sk all mesh and added a kd120 kick and vh 11 hi hat later on as well as a cy 15 ride but now i have my acoustic drums converted with triggers and roland 2ply mesh heads so i am only using the td9 module now ,i plan to replace it with either a td 20 or td 30 module cause i want more inputs and no cable snake.
    Td 9 is a nice starter kit.

    Hey, I watched a lot of your videos and need help. I own a TD4 and want to upgrade. I feel like a real upgrade would start at a TD25 or an Alesis Strike Zone. The latter got some bad reviews because of firmware-problems and the sounds though looking great. What is your recommendation for a budget up to 2700? Would you wait for 2018. Is there anything superior coming out next year which would be worth waiting?

    Relating to the video in which you recommended the iRig2 for recording covers straight to smartphone... would love to see you do a review on www.roland.com/ca/products/gomixer/ for use with eDrums. Perhaps a comparison between the two? I find it dissappointing that Roland put a guitar and a keyboard icon but no drum icon on this device - after all, don't they know that they HAVE a market of V-Drummers?? From what I read though, it seems like this isn't yet compatible with the latest Galaxy phones and Android support is a bit limited for certain live broadcasting platforms (www.roland.com/ca/support/by_product/gomixer/support_documents/96bcf1cc-972c-44c7-82cc-fb5413f29ccd/)

    I just bought this kit used - KX2 for $700. seems like a good deal. I did have to get the HH controller from GoEDrum (still got to figure how to get this to work correctly). My question with the TD-9 though is ... is it good idea to reset to factory defaults when buying used? I'm only seeing 10 user kits which seems odd to me - I thought there were like 40 or so. @@ttbu29 In 2011 Roland released firmware Version 2 for the td9 module.
      (the kx2 module have Version 2 installed)
      the v2 has added :
      30 new kicks and snares(v2 kits) , increases the internal sound bank from 522-552.
      40 new kits , increases from 50-99.
      So,

      v2 has added mp3 playback via a USB (v1 = .WAV playback)
      v2 has added updated trigger settings for kd-9, pdx-6, CY-12C, CY-13R

    Buying a drum-tec sound upgrade for my TD9, but there is a different download depending on if you have V1 or V2. How can I determine the version of the module just by looking at the module?

    • @ryanbastick3196
      @ryanbastick3196 Před 4 lety +1

      The easiest way to tell is by the number of preset kits. The V1 only came with 49 presets, where as the V2 has 89. Also, if you look at the 1st kit, it is called V-Tour Studio in the V1 and V-Tour Second on the V2. You may have to do a factory reset on your module if someone messed with the kits over the years (make sure you backup first if you want to keep the current settings). I bought my TD-9 a few years ago off of Ebay. The version was not listed, but I was able to tell the version from one of the pictures which showed the kit number and name. Both the V1 and V2 manuals are still available for download on the Roland website.

    Hey Justin, if you get the old td9 module, without the extra kits (v 2.0 upgrade - on the "kx" sets) it does not really matter, because YOU CAN upgrade the module. There is a torrent with files you put in a recently formatted USB memory; you stick it into the module, press some buttons and you're done. Roland used to do the upgrade by the same method after you sent them your module and paid for it. Of course, it is a torrent, but since the thing has been discontinued...
