Cartel Land: Coming Full Circle

- VICE spent the day with filmmaker Matthew Heineman during his first visit back to Mexico since the making of his unflinching documentary Cartel Land, which chronicles the plight of vigilante groups north and south of the border rising against gruesome drug cartels.
During his visit, we went to the premiere of the movie, spoke to some of Mexico´s key journalists on the film's local impact and how its altered their perspective on the complexity of citizen's taking matters into their own hands.
The film is now in theaters across the country (link: cartellandmovie.com/#screenings) and you can connect with the film on Facebook (link: / cartelland ) and Twitter (link: / cartellandmovie .

Thank you for making this film, thank u to all your crew as well. I hope things change sooner then later. My country is suffering.
Love from aus good luck out t here!
Love from Syria, hope the change started and your country progressing 💪🏼
6 years later its worse
The real question is how the fuck the filmmaker is still alive?!
He didn't actually meet any cartel members or anything haha just because he to Mexico doesn't mean he is going to be killed man
He probably won't be for very long
Vice Reporters have grande cojones!
alexcabcam I came in a Rabbis mouth at my bris
Mexico is not as bad as you think. Ive lived in Canada, the US and Mexico and its okey for me.. I was born in the same city where the zetas was created. I have family is the Golf and Zetas cartel.
just watched this documentary
its extremely well made and amazing
when he says it blurs the lines, hes not fucking joking..especially near the ending
it was really sad seeing this, but i also feel kinda mad now
this might be the best documentary ive ever seen
Mad enough to go buy me a 40$ packet from the sureno's at the flats
The saddest truth...the autodefensas michoacanas converted into their own cartel and then joined a larger cartel from jalisco...and the doctor morelos denounced his own autodefensas and left his activism behind. 😕
Living down here, I can tell you the lines are ALL blurred. You never know who to trust so you go through each day distrustful of everyone
No one trusts anyone I suppose is the biggest reason hardly no one speaks up... at every level of politics and the government, every level of the police, army, and navy, citizens are all highly corrupted with the cartel. If they somehow shut down all drug sales and shipments.. Mexico's economy would sink.
This movie is exactly what I have been wanting to see, it seems very interesting. Much props to the guy who went out there to Mexico, and recording how things really are over there. That really takes a lot of courage. This is definitely something I'm looking forward to watch.
This looks interesting, almost as interesting as how the fuck this guy didn't end up in eight different dumpsters.
nick robertson The people of Mexico are good people. Not everyone is a criminal or cartel member. Also he was mostly with the good side which are the town's "vigilante police" if you will. So that gave him good protection too.
Isabell Tabares That vigilante group became a cartel of its own.
+Aaron Montclair Not all of it only a section right? Then another section became "police" it's sad. The people were not ready to stand together. I think it got too big too quickly and they let too many people in that were not in it to help
because he is American. there have been countless Mexican journalists, mayors ,ect murdered in the light of day because they don't get the coverage an American would if they were executed.
+Isabell Tabares I agree with you completely. It's really sad what happened
Mexico is beautiful. Its sad to see this happening. When people hear of America they also hear of the crime and violence, but we still survive.
WretchedDrummeR you’re stupid as life when people here America. Smart people tend to think how we FUND THE CARTELS BY GIVING THEM MILITARY GRADE WEAPONS THAT THE CIA PUSHES. WE SPONSOR TERRORISM. SAME COUNTRY THAT KILLED ITS OWN IN THE TOWERS TO GO TO WAR WITH IRAQ. FOR OIL. FUCK AMERICA. OUR DEMISE IS NEAR
yea but mexico is corrupt that’s just disappointing
I was going to make a mexican joke but that's crossing the line.
xp0lym4thx lol , it actually took me about 5 seconds to catch on to the joke.
xp0lym4thx LOL!!!!!!!
xp0lym4thx I have a green card so, can I laugh?
xp0lym4thx oooooooooooooh! GOT EEEEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
xp0lym4thx Don't be jumping the fence now
I'm from Michoacan and Autodefensas have been doing this for years. About time people starting paying attention.
El Pueblo Unido !
DJLOUIE1000 what part of Michigan are you from? Detroit?
@@NR-gp2il you are stupid
Go back to mexico!
erica2002us fak you erica
The end of that movie was so depressing. The start of it had me really optimistic for a better future in Mexico. It was just like at the end all the evil got mixed in with the good and politics and vengeance and it turned into a rotten stinking mess.
idk if you saw it but did you see mireles ring when he was talking to his young love interest he was wearing a free mason ring
People need to protect themselves.
Looking forward to watching this.
awesome cant wait to see it
Congratulations on the movie and congratulations on the crews courage
Thank you!
Interesting, would love a link!
i seen this documentary already it was great and eye opening...also watched the legend of shorty also a great film
my sister's coworker had a brother playing baseball in reynosa one day then a shootout began, and as his friends ran away to safety they noticed he didn't follow. .. when they looked back he was on the ground with a bullet hole in his head.. kid was 16.
darkness6423 rip
So sad😢
seen it myself and its amazing
Looks like an excellent doc.
I remember seeing this documentary a couple years ago glad it’s coming out in Mexico
Yessssss looks great
Keep up the good work guero you doing good keeping us inform the world we never seen before
You gotta ask your self something shady Is going on when a white guy can interview cartel as their making meth
Probably had to pay for the interview
Did they try to malign the auto defensias and make them look bad ?
just watched the movie and it is amazing
When do we get to see this?
wow an actually good looking documentary from vice! yay
can you please let us know when it will be available online or on netflix or something, there's a lot of talk about the film on here yet there's no outlet for us to view it from.
Great film, nice stroytelling. And the plot twisst linkin the end with the begening, and not portraiting the autodefensas as heroes but what they were and they became is pretty honest. Thank you for this film. Appreciate it as a mexican.
I remember watching this 6 years ago!!
Young man ... you are a humanitarian ... GREAT WORK!
🏅🏅🏅🏅🏅
This movie ended like a marvel movie. I won't ruin it but damn.... powerful stuff
Yeah. Aside from being an actual documentary it's actually one of the better movies I've watched. It plays out like a film plot twist and shock ending and everything. It's hard to even believe this is a documentary, but the events and the people are real films as they are happening the gruesome images are not props.
This is a good way to make people listen. I hope the point's he tried to make with this film has some impact.
Where did u see it ? Is it threw a app ?
@@karinaalvarado3468 netflix
It's really crazy and depressing. In trying to build a grassroots movement in order to stamp out corruption and the cartels, they themselves ended up creating a new corrupt government institution; another government entity for the cartels to abuse to their own ends. It's really depressing.
@@mitjellk2186 is it still on Netflix??
Congrats...you are brave man...and good blees you!!
I gotta see this. The balls the Vice people have must be so enormous that they can only exist in another dimension. I would've been too sceered to take this project. It would be great to see the people who suffer from the violence and threat of violence one day be able to live with more peace and fewer worries/threats.
Yes it did I hope there is more to come
Where can we see this???

I can't find it and they aren't showing it in my city. Where can we watch it?
kiero ver la película pero no la encuentro
Impressive
The whole time i was terrified for Dr. Jose.. Seems like such a good dude I would hate to see him in a beheading video I heard the l z's even found someone from anonymous before
Chevy P Who? And what?
TheBomb100 Just Google anonymous and zetas you'll see lol they're no joke
They're pussies -- except against a DISARMED people: Zetas official policy is to avoid kidnapping or killing gringos, because they are afraid of disorganized hillbillies, and especially the FBI. India's and ISrael's intl agents helped USA assess MEX cartels, and found that even Zetas is LOW tech, on the same level as Anon's lowest level script-kiddies.
However, they ARE getting help from Hiz b'Allah, and the Syrian war now has decimated Hiz b'Allah to under 50% of their former strength. Obama also no longer can arm them. That leaves Carlos Slim -- a Lebanese-Mexican -- and the PRI (socialist) party as their main benefactors.
Wish I could find somewhere to actually get this doco from in my country in the first place...
I downloaded this movie the day it came out 💯
Where did you get it

There is a great journalist tradition in the US that has focused on showing the crude reality that goes on in México: in the last century I can think of John K. Turner and John Reed, and now Matthew Heineman. Lets hope for more educated and brave gringos like those ones.
Lived 3 years in mexico DF... Great city! When something happen to someone we knew we used to say Heard what happen? The city monster got him....
Nah it's a craphole. To much pollution, crowded and really dangerous.
Alex V so basically America?
bruce wayne South America, North America? Or did you meant the U.S?
Alex V united states of merica. It's basically how you described Mexico. Merica is the same goddamn thing.
The Tuna Thank God for the Gringo film maker, because Mexicans don't have cameras.
How can I watch it if I'm in Europe?
Cool story vice, but where exactly does one acquire this documentary?
You *cant* buy it, anywhere. The only place i could find was a torrent without english subs. What the fuck?!

Thank you so much for this films, it’s really hard to speak out because either the government shuts you up or the cartel will try to get you first.
Mexico is filled with history !! Like 10,000 bc old civilization that deserves respect!
just give me the link to watch it online, put it on Netflix or something
What is the movie called
He might not know it but he is a hero. By his will, he shed light upon a new discovery. From this discovery we are able to see the unseen and have our influence open unto this discovery. We the people of the world must take a step forward to stop corruption around the world so that we may grow to improve and succeed.
...so this film is available in mexico or america...has this guy never heard of streaming, I would have paid to watch this...but I cant :(
Guess i'll dl this real fast and see if it's any good.

Fucking spoiler alert 1:33
Looncan Not really a spoiler, just sort of a philosophical thought.
by spoiling it!
I thought this comment was a joke when I first saw it. Minutes later I finish the movie and Jesus Christ it actually is a spoiler.
bigge1495 Where did you find the movie online? i searched for it but had no luck in finding it so far? Big thanks for you help
Looncan You're really, really, really stupid. That's why you sholdn't be watching this and giving your opinion on something you know nothing about
6:40... Jesus I need to watch this movie!
Hes really cool!
what the movie called?
i give up trying to find this
great movie , went to theater to watch this . I give props the this guy for filming this shit , it takes balls .
I've noticed one thing about a lot of VICE's international stories: Their translations are off sometimes. They might not be that big of a deal in the scope of the whole message, but it is irritating.
I can't find the movie anywhere online nor have I seen in theaters. Can anyone provide some info about viewing it

TheBomb100 thanks
darkangelvs143 thanks

I cant find a damn video with English subtitles
Shame that reporter attacked the filmmaker for documenting the facts. I think he did a good job with making the film.
Coming July 2015
Where is it?
Didn't know this was a trailer?!? How about putting that in the title vice!
Ahhhh yissss.
@ 0:15 middle seat sure does sucks lol
i was born in the city of Tijuana and i can tell you this movie doesn't even scratch the surface of all the shit that happens in Mexico. A journalist from the US looking for fame and recognition does not birng any light or solution to the problems there. Those Autodefensas are nothing but another cartel fighting for territory of another cartel with the help of poor people and the guns of the Mexican government. Remember what happened in Chiapas Mexico with
comandante Marcos? indigenous people fought to have freedom and at the en that movement was used to create ratings for Televisa and now those people are still poor an exploited. whats going to happen to autodefensas? They're going to disappear once the new Cartel takes the territory.
Where is cartel land part two????????
If you want to distribute the documentary put it on Netflix. Netflix is available in most countries, it will expose to a larger audience.
I had no idea you were behind cartel land. That’s crazy. You have any idea how many bodies you got?
Anyone know what gun that is at 1:05
People should stand up and speak out, not against the terror, but against the government. Because the government doesn't decriminalize the drugs they empower the terrorists.
