How Pyrex bakeware is made - a 100-year-old story.
Pyrex Bakeware has been a mainstay for home cooking and baking since 1948. Manufactured from Pyrex’ patented tempered soda-lime glass, making the Bakeware both versatile and attractive. Today’s features include easy-grip handles that are molded directly into the form to allow easier and safer transfer from oven to table.
The Pyrex story begins with light bulbs and railways. Corning Inc. produced the first light bulb for Thomas Edison in 1879 and developed the heat resistant borosilicate glass to withstand extremely high or low temperatures for use in railroad signal lanterns for the American Railway Company in 1912. As an experiment, Corning research physician James Littleton asked his wife to bake a cake in an adapted base of a glass lamp. She did it, the glass withstood the heat of the oven and the cake was perfectly cooked. First bake ware item made of glass was born. Pyrex launched its first product in 1915, a pie dish sold for $0.69.
Originally, Pyrex was made from thermal shock resistant borosilicate glass. In 1998, Corning sold its consumer products division which subsequently adopted the name World Kitchen. Pyrex kitchen glassware manufactured and licensed for sale in the United States is now made of tempered soda-lime glass at the World Kitchen facility in Charleroi, Pennsylvania. Pyrex products for the European Union continue to be made of borosilicate glass in France. Pyrex laboratory glassware is also still made of borosilicate glass.
