  • In this video, Dexter a 8 x week old Chocolate Labrador Puppy is experiencing his first night on his own - separated from his 4 x brothers and 3 x sisters. But not to worry, he adjusted quite well after this night! PS. The pool he is in is the very best thing for a new puppy......I wouldn't have it any other way.

I sleep next to my puppy's crate. No crying whatsoever. They want to be right next to you, but crate training is a must.

well all the people saying they would let the pup sleep with them. Y'all do realize it's a pup that's not potty trained so it would most likely shit in your bed while you are asleep

+Stephanie Trotter Take a small crate to the bedroom, the dog will need to go potty in the night, so you will be able to know when he wakes and take him out. This kind of stress can cause permanent PTSD type damage to a young puppy.

Teaching the puppy about the crate and using the crate overnight PROPERLY is so relatively straightforward and I feel so sorry for this puppy because he was obviously not introduced to it properly!

We brought home a 12 weeker. I left a bit of music playing around during the first couple of nights and he was absolutely quiet ever since. Labs are so gorgeous when it comes to behaviour. Remember, I didn't leave him in a crate or a playpen. Gave him one of the rooms and a comfy bed.

That poor little dog :( they can tell when you don't want them. My dad turned up home randomly with a dog, only he likes them. My mum sat at the kitchen table by herself and was talking to herself like "what the hell do I do with a dog?!" And the little guy came over (10 months when we got him) and looked at her all sad like he knew and she literally melted. He's now 9 years old and absolutely adored by all of us and my boyfriend and I are getting our first puppy together in about 5 months. Goes to show the little things can change your perception. You will grow to love him.

Silly comment. They want their puppy, but puppies are not potty trained and can get into trouble if they are not contained. It is safest to keep them in a small area for a while.

Our puppy sleeps in her crate at night in the living room (which is right outside my bedroom door) and our older dog sleeps on his bed in front of the crate. I leave the tv and a lamp on. She whines when she needs to potty, I take her out, then she goes back to sleep. She actually loves her crate and will retreat to it by herself when she’s sleepy or tired of the attention she gets from everyone (and yes, puppies DO need breaks from people wanting to play with them). We don’t close the door unless it’s bedtime, and she’s perfectly happy with the arrangement.

I’m sorry. But I don’t think u realise that even if u read every book, or watch every vid. Even if u start crate training the second u get home. And have everything u need. That isn’t going to stop the puppy from being terrified. Imagine u were him, u just get ripped from ur mum and littermates by some strange human creature. Then bought home to a weird box thing and inside, u go into this scary, big metal crate, which is HUGE for them. So whatever u do. The first night will always b the worst. There r things u can do to try and help. But it won’t stop the crying completely. So u can’t just assume that someone has done no research or anything before getting their new pup, just based on seeing 1 vid of it crying. Sorry. That was rly long! I hope I didn’t come across as rude. I just wanted to help a little. Cuz I’m getting my pup in about a week. And I have done LOADS of research. Yet he is still gonna cry 100%. Hope this helped ☺️

My lab was in a crate at 8 weeks old. I did not allow my fiancé to bring him to bed with us or to bring the crate to our bedroom. After almost a week of sleepless nights, he is finally on a schedule! He is now 11 weeks and sleeps all night and wakes up at a decent time in the morning. He's a very good dog! He's teething, but thank God for doggie toys made for teething. He's like our baby! We couldn't be happier!

***** you are missing the point here. A dog has to learn to be independent and alone. You're not gonna be with the dog 24/7 are you? Letting them sleep alone for the first few nights is okay after that you can let it sleep wherever it wants. Sleeping alone will help it deal with separation anxiety when you leave for work, etc. I hate seeing puppies being scared too but the reason you have to do this with puppies is because puppies accept new things readily (it doesn't mean they aren't afraid) between 8-12 weeks. Try this with a full grown dog and barking won't stop.

If they are fed, exercised, not thirsty...cuddled and tired...then they are ready for the crate..
I used treats to get my lab accustomed..walking them in and out, sitting on the floor,..once puppy is relaxed and lays down, you can get up and walk away..
I think best to have a day of introduction to a crate before locking in overnight..

You could make this simple. Train him with treats and a mark like “yes.” When my puppy did what I want he got a treat and when he misbehaved he did not get the treat and a simple “naw.” Now as he was crate training he whined but I would use “naw” and that taught him it was a bad behavior. Takes literally 1 minute for him to calm down and then he is out from 10:00 pm until 4 am.

Dogs are pack animals. They want to be with the pack. Even if it is only you and the pup, then you two are the pack!
The first few days are tough on a pup. Before bringing him/her home get a little towel or baby blanket with his mother's scent on it for the pup to sleep with it.
Also, put the crate next to your bed at night. This is good for two reasons. One the pup will feel loved and secure being near you, his pack mate. And two, once you hear the dog moving around and squirming, it is because he needs to go potty and you can wake up and take him out BEFORE the whines.
      Good Luck
PS Don't feed or water your puppy right before bedtime so that he does not have a full bladder or bowels.
In addition the puppy will not need to stay in your bedroom indefinitely. This is only for a few days or a week or two at most until the pup has become use to you and his new home with you. ;)

This kind of training is probably best, much like leaving a human baby in their crib. You people in here complaining that this is cruel, when the same thing happened to you when you were a baby. Nobody in their right mind is going to let a puppy sleep on their bed in the start. Just like they're not going to have a diaperless baby on their bed all night. No. They're going to leave baby in the crib all night, trying to not give in to their cries for attention. The same logic applies to puppies. Learn from this, folks.

Whtats upsetting is how ignorant you are. Yes the pup is upset but as the video says, it's the first night home. The pup is not used to being by himself. With such a young pup you can not just let him roam free, and pee all over your floor. There's a process puppy owners have to go through. Yes I do agree maybe he could be closer to the owner during bedtime but other than that I see no problem with this.
