Thanks for the video and what you say is right, I do feel like I am a Jekyll and Hyde with our dog (a flatcoated retriever), one second I am "uh uh" being all stern with a lower tone, the next second I am "good boy, well done" in a high sweet voice. People must think I am bonkers, Lol. It does seem to work though!

Too many people don't research dog breeds before buying a puppy. My puppy is A/ my FIRST puppy and B/ my FIRST gundog (cross) from working lines. She's only 1/4 GWP, (3/4 Gordon Setter), and I've been training her from day one in short, 5 - 10 minute sessions. She went to her first gundog training last weekend aged 18 weeks.

Rum is a very handsome boy! I do see the benefits of buying a perfect dog like a well bred labrador. My heart lies with rescues however, so I accept I have a lab mix with a bit of an edge to it sometimes. But, that’s no excuse to not try our best. Practice makes perfect… sometimes ;)

Thank you for the video training. My boy is 5 year short haired vizsla. I spend everyday practicing training techniques. But the one thing I can’t win with is loose lead walking. His nose is to the ground chasing the scent. Mum & Dad are working dogs.

We have 3 GWPs and love the breed. That said, it took 21 years to find a line we were happy enough with to breed from. We train them from day 1 very much like Labs before we allow them to realise what hunting is all about and how much more fun it is to be out quartering and hunting. Consistency is of course an absolute must. No means no not "Ah, I know he shouldn't have done that but he is so cute."
Great the way you are reading your dogs. We all need to be doing that more so we can preempt what our paragons of virtue are about to do next.

When you say he wants to play with you, how would you play with a gundog without doing dummy work or training? Thanks love your videos!

How do you transition from a lab who is waiting patiently for a retrieve to a dog who will quarter a field and flush birds

I've had standard Schnauzers almost all my life, my current one is absolutly perfect but he definitly didn't start that way. It takes time, consistency and comitment. It doesnt matter what breed you get, if you don't fully commit to the training and socializing it's is always going to have issues. I've seem plenty of labradors that are out of control with owners who underestimate what it takes to train a dog.

Do you not at this stage incorporate vocal commands and body language with whistle?

Lovely dog. We've got a 6month yellow lab who jumps about like Rum was doing when you were holding the dummy. Our dog likes to play keep away, especially with a dummy. Tennis balls he'll retrieve and leave, any tips on progressing to a dummy and achive a perfect delivery each time?

Did you figure this out? I see you made this comment 3 months ago. Maybe a check cord or ecollar training?
