Sky Sports' Chief Reporter Kaveh Solhekol and former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie spoke on set to discuss Sandro Tonali's 10 month ban from football after the Newcastle midfielder admitted to betting offences.
Sandro Tonali admitted to making bets on AC Milan matches during his time with the Serie A side. The Italy international midfielder joined Newcastle for £55m this summer and his 10-month ban from football means he will not be available for action until August 2024.

Regardless of any ban, if its not permanent, a player should be allowed to train. Firstly for mental health reasons but also so they can come back after the ban ready to bounce back. A ban on training can massively impact the rest of their career

Why? So they can injure a teammate in training after placing a bet against the side? So they can scout how the team is looking before placing bets? There is no benefit to having people who are incapable of controlling themselves around gambling involved with any industry in which legitimacy is a top concern.

So the three Sheffield Wednesday players is a totally different scenario to Tonali. Although going to prison was too harsh for the Sheffield three. We don't really know whether Tonali or Toney have a gambling problem. Football's rules mean those with an addiction get shorter bans. Players want to get back playing football as soon as possible. Being addicted is rightly seen as (at least partly) an excuse for going against the rules and rightly gets sympathy from fans too. Whereas someone caught who is not addicted has no excuses and is more likely to get abuse. Therefore only natural for every player caught gambling to say they're addicted whether they are or not

Their main responsibility is football and creating a safe environment for kids and adults. Their commitment is not to betting not gambling and they need to keep it out of football.
It's all over the TV during games, it's on the kits, the banners. It should not be allowed and as long as it is it's not the fault of the football players that being prof or amateurs' that they get exposed to it. You cannot control an addiction or illness.
