    Static Anti-Air is probably the real unsung hero of HOI4. It's that building that everyone know is there, but no one really cares about - me included until now.
    So, in regular fashion, I spent half my sunday testing - And to be honest, I didn't really expect to find that much interesting... ...but I think I really stumbled into a few things that are really worth while, that I don't think many of you know about. So please enjoy :)

    Good video! Static AA is underrated. Especially in mods like Kaiserreich where you're dealing with a more competent AI. You really should have it as Germany in that game, otherwise France attempt to CAS the hell out of you.

    I found out the hard way that static AA is quite good. I was once playing a modded game against AI and I saw a bunch of static aa in a zone and honestly didn't care. 500 strat bombers later I realized not only was my bomber fleet gone but every single day they did damage, it was so little it was repaired the very next day. 80% is absolutely insane and if I'm not mistaken it applies to the AA too, so you can just give up strat bombing.

    • @hyggegaming
      @hyggegaming  Před 3 měsíci +4

      Yeah, it can be incredibly powerful :) but if they don’t repair, the bomber can get the upper hand once grinding it down. But still, yeah

    Great guide, thank you! I would really like it if you add a recommendations part to your guides. For example, after walking through the impact of Static AA give us your easy to digest suggestions - like build Static AA in industry centers, especially if you are on concentrated industry. Does it make sense to upgrade static AA only for preventing landings in Normandy or would that be an inefficient use of resources?

    I am actually surprised that Static Air defence is not used more often.
    I use it as Russia and build in captured Polish territories after the Molotov Ribbentrop pact.
    It helps the Russian airforce, who even though they lose allot of planes by the beginning of 1943 you are starting to see yellow and then green air against the Luftwaffe.

    • @Zack_Wester
      @Zack_Wester Před 3 měsíci

      I think its because the meta is just to build a truck ton of fighters to archive air superiority.
      and instead of spending civ industry on AA guns they make weapon factories to make more fighters.
      because this is Europe we got Logistic hubs every 3 space.
      we got lots of train lines and good infrastructure.
      we alos have tons of high level airport meaning we will not run of out parking space for our aircraft.
      meanwhile AA guns are static after you built them and the front moved well they become useless.
      Im not sure if player builds bunkers beyond maybe on mountain ranges or other spots where they go I will just walk around then deal whit the front so I build bunkers and put this specificity designed div template there to guard it.

    • @hyggegaming
      @hyggegaming  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I think in general it’s really useful to build where you have focused defensive lines with forts or concentration of industry :)

    • @Hutcho72
      @Hutcho72 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@Zack_Wester You can counter this by putting AA guns with your infantry division.
      That actually works as your divisions are naturally mobile.
      The trouble is that the Russian German front if it is done correctly becomes a large stalemate with units being static, and combat not really moving.
      I have tried the Fighter approach and it does work, however it takes time to get eventual superiority.
      I have found this with the German and also the Russians as well.
      That is because there is so much demand on your airforce to try and cover the front and protect against bombing raids.
      Hence the static AA, as even when the front moves the Germans will still try and bomb you, and later id you get into a war with the Allies the same will occur.

      @@hyggegaming Yes I can definitely see the virtues of this method!

    • @Zack_Wester
      @Zack_Wester Před 3 měsíci

      @@Hutcho72 the thing whit AA guns in the mobile division is that thoes can only target Fighter and cas fighting on the front line.
      any Tactical/strategical bombers flying towards Berlin 50 miles behind the frontline can´t be targeted (to far upp).
      There was a reason why the first computer used was a calculator for AA guns shooting at strategical bombers because it took the shells like 30 sec to get up there.
      anyway back on topic the only thing that can hit Strategical bombers are Static AA (that you build) and Light/heavy fighters.
      (not sure if its just intercept mission or if Air superiority also works).

  • @andrews68
    @andrews68 Před 3 měsíci +7

    Does it help defend against close air support / reduce damage to ground troops in region? Does it shoot down enemy fighters / close air support / recon etc etc or only enemy planes on strategic bombing ?

    • @hyggegaming
      @hyggegaming  Před 3 měsíci +3

      I tested the above that you ask for, and it does not defend directly against CAS. It does however removes a bit of the air superiority debuff you get from enemy air (including CAS on missions). But apart from that, it is targeting enemy bombers on strategic bombing, correct. Someone in the comments also claimed it helps against logistic strikes and port strike, but I haven’t tested :)

    • @Zack_Wester
      @Zack_Wester Před 3 měsíci +4

      @@hyggegaming does make sense as Historically the static AA was located a bit away from the front designed to take out or at least tell bombers and what not to bugger off.
      plus the static AA guns was huge like Frontline AA that was shoting at fighters and CAS Might be a Machine gun or a small auto cannon.
      meanwhile the static AA was massive sending it shells so far that the nation that could build a calculator was wining the war just on that part.
      Like me shoting at a plane whit a MG at the front the shoot would hit the aircraft in 0.5 to 2 sec later.
      the static AA was shooting at targets 10-15 sec away (the lead was insane).

    • @Hutcho72
      @Hutcho72 Před 3 měsíci

      I have found putting AA support units in your division templates actually does help against CAS, if each other your divisions on the front have AA guns in them, that is allot of guns shooting at the enemy, reducing their effectiveness.
      Along side that of your fighters, having AA guns in your division template I think effects the mechanics of air superiority.

      @hyggegaming  Před 3 měsíci +2

      I think you answer the question a bit yourself :) but.. I would probably have a look at my enemies plane production getting closer to the war, and then prioritize any defensive points and build AA there just in case. and you can build it as the battle rages on (can´t do that whit bunkers at the front) if there is a fight on the tile where a bunker is been built it will stop building and the worker will do something else.

    Nice summary. One question you don't reply: is it better to spread static AA in the air region, or concentrate for max capacity in key provinces?
    It seems to me it's better to spread, for the same total number of static AA pieces.

    • @hyggegaming
      @hyggegaming  Před 3 měsíci +1

      For the effect of air superiority it doesn’t matter if it’s spread or not. But regarding bomber protection, I would always prioritize one region at a time to get it to lvl 5, then move on to the next. Starting with the one with most industry or with an important fort line to defend

    Can you explain how defense really work?
    I read it somewhere that your high defense doesn't matter, for example if you have 1k defense, enemy have 100 soft attack, so it gonna reduce 100 soft attack to half. Same if you have 100 defense. (I just read it somewhere, don't know if it true or not).

    Static anti-air was a huge problem for the UK and Americans. Hundreds of pilots and crew members, and hundreds of bombers were lost. Make them pay any way you can.
    In the game they give you lots of breathing room to react. And helps with micro.
