  • Amigurumi is the art of knitting and crocheting toys. In order to make the best stuffed animals and dolls, you need patience and a little skill. But there are amigurumi mistakes you will want to avoid so that your pieces are as cute as the hours you put into creating them.

YES! Someone who knows her stuffing!
With knitting, I sometimes use a smaller size of needles, so that the stitches are tighter. Too many times I’ve overdone the stuffing for the size of the stitches and have given up the project, restarted it.
The SHAPE of your critter/doll is all-important.
    Thanks.

Haha! Love it! Stuffing is so very important! And that's a great idea with knitted toys because you can overstuff them so easily compared to crocheted toys! 🌻💓🍄

Yes! I have the first amigurumi I made (for my son), and I used chunky yarn, but with the keen eye I have developed, I see the mistakes. After being avid about amigurumi since that first plush, I have grown to create some very good looking products, and have picked up so many tricks along the way. This is a great video for new and experienced ami makers!

Starting with the face is a KEY! I normally start with the feet and body. Then i make and sew on the arms. And THEN the head and ears. But that makes the problem that the head is just.. whatever. Because i enjoy making the bodies so much, i get it done, hurry on the arms, and just loose interest on the head. So last night i started crocheting a long legged bear. And i made the head, and i'm telling you, it's the most "not rushed" head i've ever made! I don't think i'm going back now😅 i absolutely love this technique!

Here a tip for stuffing. I used to make handmade dolls. I found that using the quilt batting from Walmart gave the dolls a better look and lasted exceptionally well . Just pull off the amount of batting you’d like. Shred it with your hands so it resembles regular stuffing. It’s a much sturdier, coarser stuffing. Highly recommended. For stuffing tools. The larger end of a wooden chopstick works great. Because the stuffing is coarser it’s far easier to stuff.

OH stitch markers are a SAVIOUR for counting stitches!
Like i have dyscalculia and numbers are. Difficult to say the least. Keeping them all straight in my head is a challenge and stitch markers help with it because i dont have to just rely on my head to count the stitches. I still have to count but at least if i mess up i can always just go back to the beginning of the round and start again. And with markers i dont have that many numbers floating around anyways
Its a simple thing, but i didnt know stitch markers were a thing until very recently and i love them so much. Like i just thought people struggled and then i saw someone using them in a video and was like "???? whats that????" and i just love em so much (and the fact that you can get like. very cute ones from like etsy or whatever and they are like bobbles and trinkets??? amazing. truly outstanding. I have found a new thing in going to start collecting ooh boy)

Have you used Jean Greenhowe patterns for knitted toys? She tells you how much the tummy should measure after stuffing, and many other handy hints. When my cat was small we discouraged him from playing with the yarn, mum and I were often using. He is a lap cat, we didn't let the yarn drape on him and disturb him. We also didn't give him knitted or crochet toys, reasoning he would think all of them were his, and would dissapear them. We gave him small plastic bottle caps to chase, and paper bows on a string on the end of a stick until he concentrated on chewing through the string. When he was tiny he stole a huge ball of yarn, could hardly get his legs to the ground over it, so he was easy to catch. That was so funny. Now 7 years on, he ignores my yarn when I work with him on my lap.

Here's my #1 peeve when I do amigurumi, I can never get a perfect round ball after stuffing 😥 The faces of my dolls are loopsided 🤣🤣🤣 I stuff by pushing the center polyfills towards the outer part and then putting more stuffing in the center. I think I should have asked the question differently.
On some Amigurumis I only stuff the bottom part of the arms. But with time and usage by the child the poly can ride up. I saw a video a looong time ago where the instructor made some sts inside just above the poly line that she said would eliminate that problem. The problem is…… at 76 I can’t remember how she did it.
I’m On the hunt for that tip !
Thank you for your quick response!

So im following this tutorial to make an amigurumi horse. I have one ear that is decent and the other ear is bigger. On the head part I have missed a few stitches somewhere. The head looks wonky. I started the legs and I dont know if I did it right, but they're even. I lose track so easily on the stitches and I think thats here I'm missing stitches. Is the magic ring the same as a magic circle? My horse is looking more like a pig 🤣 I think im going to restart it because it'd supposed to be a gift and I don't want to give a wonky gift haha

Sounds like he's going to be adorable! My beginning projects were just like that! I love looking back on them. And yes, the magic ring as the same thing as a magic circle! Good luck! 🌻

If you use a pattern from a book or online, are you allowed to make the item and sell it or is that considered a copyright issue or something? I'm interested in getting an amigurumi book or buying some patterns and want to sell some items but I'm not sure if I'm technically allowed.

    • @EliseRoseCrochet
      @EliseRoseCrochet  Před 3 lety +1

Each designer has their own policy on whether or not they "allow" people to sell finished items. In general most do, if you share on the label or listing who the pattern designer is. But most books and patterns actually have a statement with that information. But when in doubt, contact the designer and ask. Most of them are on Instagram. 🍄

There really isn't a perfect size (or weight) of yarn for amigurumi but I would stick to DK and worsted weight yarns for most patterns. Hope that helps!

Love your channel and have learned so much! I do have to ask why do you and so many others add background music to the videos where you are speaking and giving instruction in.? It is so distracting and makes one feel you are rushing through the topic at hand. I have been noticing this trend across all media. I love videos set to music with no speaking but combining the two just doesn’t work .

Please, anybody, if you could help me on this problem I'm having, I would appreciate it so much. So here's my problem; (I have tried to search this so many tines with no luck.) STRETCHED OUT (ripple spots) AREAS!!! I have now tried to redo this project I have been crocheting, a dolls head, 8 times!!! Im getting so discouraged that I am worried I will just say forget it. And I really don't like being a quitter not to mention I've paid for this kit which I would really like to finish. So I really don't want to be a quitter. But im running out of steam as well as patience. I have the correct amount of stitches. I'm increasing/decreasing where I'm supposed to be. My tension is pretty even, theres no holes and no gaps. And my stitches, I was just thinking to myself, started really looking nice. But EVERY SINGLE TIME I make this dolls head/face shape it it won't be the normal head shape or an oval shape or whatever shape I'm supposed to be making. Because there will always be stretched out areas!!! Its like pushed out from the inside looking rippled areas. I'll put it this way. My head on my poor doll wasnt the round oblong head shape it was supposed to be, but instead the top area looked like a damn CHEFS HAT!! 🤣😭Yep. a chefs hat. 👨‍🍳 Thats a perfect description because it looks EXACTLY like that. I dont know weather to laugh or cry. The smooth transition from the flatter front face was fine. But the round top "skull area" I guess you would say... yeah...right there....CHEFS HAT! WTH?! Its smooth, going fine, going into the curve.. BAM CHEFS HAT! If Im trying to be positive about the situation all I can say is Im lucky its Halloween because if nothing else and I just cant figured it out, at least this characters head can double as FRANKENSTEIN!! 🤣😭HELPPPPP!!!!! Please and thank you and I appreciate it so much in advance. Thanks!
