It's funny, when this all came out we were kids and didn't know anything about anything. We thought pretty much every song Metallica made was about the government or war. We didn't know anything about loss or drugs. It was fast, loud, and pissed off. That was enough.

When I first heard this, when it came out in 1986, I probably didn't understand the drug metaphor, either. I was only 13 years old, of course, and just thought it was an epic jam. My point is... Nobody makes music like this anymore. They don't make accessible heavy metal anymore, is what I'm saying. I'm sure there are plenty of heavy bands kicking ass nowadays but the genre seems diminished. Am I right? Or am I just outta touch?

Bassist Cliff Burton was killed while they were on tour in Europe for this album. The music was never as good after. The first 3 albums are the real Metallica. Period! RIP Cliff Burton
