2K actually is weather and temp sensitive. Humidity will give issues and so will temps below 60 degrees. Isocyanates in the 2K are pretty nasty and require more protection. you need a at least a 3M 7500 series half mask, a pair of Uvex S3970DF goggles for your eyes, and a 3m 60921 filter

The problem with normal organic vapor style cartridges is there is a limit before they get overly saturated when using products containing isocyanates. 3M states this clearly in their tech sheet. Full body PPE with a supplied air respirator is recommended.

Got some 2k clear from a local car place and it's the best clear i've ever used, best shine, ends up like smooth glass to the touch, scratch resistant, it does need to go on heavy with 2 layers as instructed on the data sheet and it didn't react to any paint especially the metallics, it kept their shine.
One thing i discovered after 4 days a sword handle i sculpted and painted it had a little bit of tackiness, just a little like touching it briefly was okay but holding it in hand for like a minute had a little bit of sticky feeling. On the data sheet i found online it says it dries in like 6 hours but takes 7 days to fully cure so waiting a few more days to see if it fully disappears, 2 days later it feels less sticky but still not quite, it may need another week.

Another thing to note about 2k, at least as far as I've read, is that it is very very bad for your health. So you should use protective measures like mask, gloves, extraction etc.
    Sweet paint job btw.

As long as your plastic is properly prime and base coated you shouldn't have problems useing there thinners is them with no problems.

  • @MedskiPurnamski
    @MedskiPurnamski Před rokem +4

If anyone is planning on using these on a plastic kit, note that not all 2K clear coat work well with plastic and it may even melt the kit's surface even if you use hobby thinners like Mr. Hobby. Best try it out first on a junk part. Also it should always, always be the last and final layer of paint because while the 2K clear won't likely destroy the hobby paint underneath it (assuming it's safe to use on plastic to begin with), another layer of hobby paint ON TOP of the 2k can create an unexpected reaction to the clear coat and will ruin the whole paintjob. I've had this issue several times when I was painting my Tamiya VW Beetle. This may not happen to all 2K and hobby paint brands (I was using Jumpwind paints for the base color) but again, it's worth to try it out on a junk part first.

I’m just starting to learn how to airbrush clearcoat so I have some questions for you.
    1) what size nozzle are you using
    2) for the first coat you say drop the pressure. What do you drop it to and what is the normal pressure you drop it from?
Thanks in advance man. You’re doing what a lot of shop keepers say is impossible!

  • @automotiveenthusiast1160

I wouldn't use "thinner" as in lacquer thinner to reduce 2k clearcoat. You want to use a urethane grade reducer to thin it out. Unless you call anything used to reduce paints a "thinner" then I get saying it that way. But with 2k clear, you really have to choose what you call some products. Thinner in a store that sells automotive paint, is usually lacquer thinner. You might have a bad reaction if you use that product. Also, a good auto paint store will sell you the correct liquid to reduce clear coat. Anyways, just my two cents as an automotive painter.

I have a UHS (ultra high solids) 2k clear coat in my workshop.
This stuff is thick. Even with harder and reducer added.
Because it's so thick, I sprayed the part (small part, size of a finger) using and automotive gun with a 1.6 needle.
The outcome was horrible. It did cure and it did not melt anything but because of the large spraygun it was just a too thick and too heavy of a coat.
I did not use my airbrush because I thought that this stuff is too thick for an airbrush (0.5 and 0.8 needle) and would not spray.
Techsheet said no more than 5% reducer to be added to the mix.
Any tips and tricks to use this stuff with an airbrush?
I need this ultra high gloss shine and sturdy coat of clear for my project....
