Do have to note the importance of health protection when using 2k polyurethane. They contain chemicals called isocyanates which are sensitizers, meaning that your body can react badly to the stuff after being exposed to the chemical through any amount of exposure. Whether you'll have a reaction will entirely depend on your body, and just because your body didn't react to a small exposure doesn't mean you're safe since sensitisation can develop over repeated exposures. So avoiding even the smallest exposure through the use of gloves, respirator, spray booth, etc is a must.
Of course, that's why 2K paints are being outlawed and mainly water based paints used for automotive use. Full eye and skin protection is required. This stuff is lethal.
FYI, outside of water, anything we spray through an airbrush isn’t safe. So proper PPE should always be used.
Years ago I would lay factory floors with resin my boss was my girlfriend dad lol. First I had all my mates helped but the resin gave them dermatitis on there arms and face so I had to help him for few years and showed me everything I was lucky my skin not dry. Her dad is not with us anymore died of cancer definitely coz years working with resin. If I’m a small room you could see the air misty

People that paint cars with urethane and 2K clear wear full 3M suits force fed with fresh air. Full face mask, gas mask with organic vapor filters etc. This stuff is wildly dangerous and it's irresponsible for content creators to show it used on model cars. The finish he gets in this video is no better than one you can achieve with Tamiya or Mr. Color laquers and either brand's clear coat. There are a TON of people in the comments on this talking about how they're going to run out and buy autobody paint and 2K clear now and you just know the most that a majority of them will do is put on a single glove like in this video. He should take this down.
This channel is by far the best to learn about paint and supplies. All the guesswork is done for you. Watch, take notes, then paint!!
the 2K clear really makes the basecoat pop! Motivating me to finish a 57 T-Bird I'm doing for my dad.
I used to work at a dealership 30 years ago. The painter in our bodyshop would mix me colors and clear to paint my models. He would also let me use the paintbooth. Those paint jobs turned out nice.
I haven't airbrushed in almost 40 years! Was just inexpensive equipment back in the day! Like to get back into it! I've enjoyed your paint specific Channel for more than a year now. Thanks

To tell you the truth I was shocked as to how nice this came out. It really is beautiful in person. Very easy to spray too
I have a few Grex spray guns & I love 'em! My pistol guns didn't come with the fan cap or larger spray cups back then. They have painted many railroad structures in my club. I also have their airbrush which the needles & some nozzles fit each other. When they 1st came out we questioned the magnetic caps, however they haven't fell off over time. Some units the cap sticks to the back of the gun. I love the wider than normal handle, makes for a very comfortable grip for me. The airbrush grip I've added to some of the other airbrushes I own. These old hands don't cramp up on the skinny barrels anymore.
That Grex micro spraygun kit looks great, comes with just about everything you'd need as a workhorse airbrush.
Looks great using real auto paint,, been saving a long time for air brush and compressor, so I've been using all spray cans for painting and clearing, new to this but still learning, looks great tho
I don't do a lot of car models. I'm more of a military and miniature painter. I have a small hobby space, so that setup looks like it would fit my space perfectly. Great vid as always and I'm looking forward to the next one.
This is going to help me quite a bit I think as I'll be painting a 55 Chevy model starting soon on my channel. Been binging your videos getting a feel for not only airbrush techniques but paint mix ratios, products, etc.
Any recommendations for 55 Chevy kits? My dad had restored a real one but had to sell it when his health got bad.
@@Bastardsama I have only built the old Monogram convertible kit before. Which is what i'm going to build again because I got it for free, lol. I would say any modern-ish kit from Monogram or AMT would probably be ok. Barbatos Rex might actually have a much better answer.

I'd personally say that airbrushing is more about feel than anything. I tried learning by watching videos and replicating what they were doing but I just ran into more frustration than anything. When I decided to just wing it and go with what worked for me I managed to improve my skills a lot faster. You can copy someone's instructions to the letter and get terrible results because everything can be compensated for with technique basically.
PSI, thinning ratios, how long you hold the trigger, how aggressively you pull it back, how close you hold the air brush, what angle you hold it to your work piece etc are all going to be different and you can't really learn that from a video. Depending on your technique maybe a lower PSI will feel more intuitive for you, maybe you need to increase your thinning ratio to compensate, maybe not. Its all about feel and experience.
The good news is that you'll develop that feel very quickly if you're not focusing on trying to copy other people and just going with what feels good for you. At the end of the day as long as the paint gets where you want it and delivers the finish you want there is no right and wrong technique, psi, thinning ratios, or anything else.
@@nelakendra2296 True. But I thought it best to absorb some info first, though. Rather than just going at it completely blind. The biggest thing was thinning ratios and not knowing where to start. Unfortunately I don't have any local friends that airbrush anything so I wasn't able to go hang out with anybody and get any pointers live. So. here I come, CZcams! lol.

Have always thought about using actual car paint for my models and this just confirmed my confidence in using these products without worrying about crazing the plastic.
You should be wary of the paint used. Not all paint are made equal in the automotive industry. Plasmo has a vid where he used some and effed up his kit and he had to redo it completely.

I discovered your paint test videos a couple months ago. I have found some great info in them.
A piece if 1/2 inch PVC pipe makes a great handle for the Tamiya paint stand. The pipe fits in the uper section well and a 1/2 inch coupling fits over the pin on the base well. 4 or 6 inches of pipe gives a good size handle and can also extend the height for easier to get to the lower part of the body.

I mainly stick to military models, but the way this turned out makes me really want to do some cars. That is one of the best pain jobs I have seen.
I think it is so cool what you are doing with these giveaways. That is really cool how you are giving back. In the last video you said you didn't want to use anything you give away. Personally I think everybody would still be blown away to get a product that you had tested. I say if you aren't going to use them again your fans would. I'm getting ready to shoot a 1965 corvette green that I had mixed at an auto paint store. it is for a 1965 impala ss. it was a car my cousin bought when he came back from Vietnam. he passed away a few months ago and I want to do it in his honor. Thanks for doing a video dealing with auto paints. You are the answer that I needed and I will use the new brush when it gets here.

I love using automotive paints on my models, It's way better than anything else, (for the bodies), I try to build some crazy stuff on my channel, I love the info you give us all, Keep up the great work sir.

Basecoat is typically mixed 1:1 paint and reducer. Clear is 4:1 paint and hardener/activator. This is the ratio for full size spray guns. For the airbrush, you could probably add more reducer for the color if needed, but try 1:1.
Another great video! I've been hesitant to try using real auto paint and knew nothing about using 2K clear - you've taken the mystery out of using them. Also, that trigger airbrush looks like a natural for painting model car bodies. Thanks for all you do for all of us hobbyists.

Wow! That looks fabulous. Hours of wet sanding and polishing avoided. Love your continual explanation of what you are doing and what you're using.
I like the process too, but have to disagree on the sanding/ polishing. The model has orange peel that is clearly recognizable and will have to be sanded and polished in order to archieve a gloss that will look right in scale. People often argue that 1:1 cars have orange peel too which is correct, but it’s hardly reasonable to think that the same level of orange peel that will hardly be noticed on a 1:1 looks correct on a 1:24. I don‘t mean to criticize, I just think this process is not complete by any means.
