    One of my two lower body routines right now, for training at home is this workout + normal lower body routine.. so,
    4x10-15 superset tibia + soleus
    4x8 Standing calve raises
    5x3 blockpulls (weighted, ofcourse)
    3x10 split squats (weighted)
    3x10 nordic hamcurls (bodyweight, for now)
    3x10 walking lunges (weighted)

    Should this be ok to perform in a upper/lower split where I train legs twice a week?

  • @Vmh1717
    @Vmh1717 Před 3 lety +1

    Calf training is all about mind muscle connection even more so mind joint connection. It took me YEARS to figure out how to actually do a calf raise that fully stretches and fully contracts. I don’t even know if the subtle difference would be captured on a camera and I don’t even know how to describe it. Now that I’m doing them the “correct” way for my anatomical structure, I’m seeing progress , albeit slow progress but progress. Before I started hitting calves I LITERALLY did not have a visible gastroc, now they are what u could consider smaller but “defined” calves.
    For me after trying every and everything, the one thing that worked for me is putting a two by four on the ground, with a towel over it. I place my foot/heel on them in a way that the stretch before I even contract hurts. The other thing u have to figure out is how to feel the stretch in your gastroc NOT your Achilles. This is why I stoped doing them on stairs. In fact the stretch is more painful than the contraction. Then on the contraction..... it literally took me years to be able to fully contract to the point where I could feel my inner gastroc sort of pulling onto my knee.
    Explaining how to work ur calves correctly is so difficult Because it’s not like chest where as long as u are benching, you are hitting chest, even if u have bad form and mostly hit triceps, ur still hitting chest. With calves u have to get urself into the perfect position for ur structure that really stretches the gastroc, otherwise it’s always going to be an Achilles/ soleus exercise .
    To add some context I was a pretty good athlete, 4.6 ish fourty time, could dunk. Still had zero calves. Even know I still can’t figure out how to fully contract on one leg raises, maybe it’s weakness.
    Moral of the story, calves are unlike the other big muscle groups, you have to use trial and error until u find that movement that stretches and contracts in a way that gets u sore in the gastroc.

    Thanks for another awesome video, John! Quick question, would you say doing calf raises in a seated leg press (I'm thinking of the pin loaded ones where the plate moves, but I guess it's equally applicable to all leg presses) is equivalent to doing a donkey calf raise, or is there some difference I'm missing? And if they are different, would you say that it's a significant enough difference to try and finagle a donkey raise setup?

  • @RedPillVegan
    @RedPillVegan Před 3 lety

    My gym has no donkey raise. Creative smith rack may be possible.
    but i found using the standing calf raise if you just reposition to on your heels you can to tibialis raises while still having the weight on your shoulders. Not the same, but adds some resistance

    My calves are 17 now but after I broke both achilles about 2 years ago they were 14. I do 10 sets of standing calf raises toes straight and 2 sets toes in 2 sets toes out twice a week. They seem to have gotten stuck so I need to change something up but am afraid of heavy weight with them since those achilles popped. Do you think I should try to get heavier? I normally do 50-20 reps per set.

  • @CoCody_
    @CoCody_ Před 5 lety +1

    Man I wish I heard the part of gradually increasing the days you work your lower leg. Right out of the gate I started doing these every training session and although I noticed massive progress, I eventually started to over train/not get enough rest and my Achilles tendon would hurt when my knee went far beyond my feet. For example, very deep front squats. I hope someone else reads this and starts slow. Avoid going all in immediately.

      mountaindog1 thanks. Yeah I know, I like jumping rope 10mins two times a week and also I add in 2-3 days of seated and standing work for calves with some tibia work as well.

    Sadly most gyms don't even have the first machine and I don't see how I can substitute for it that isn't completely inconvenient to use
    Edit: nevermind

    Yo I live in LA and those bodybuilding gyms with these type of machines are no longer here. All these commercial gyms have taken over and replaced with treadmills

  • @Staymotivatedtodayandenjoylife

    My calves are extremely small! Unfortunately, my gym doesn't have any machine for calves. Is there a way I can train these calves with free weights?

    Hey sir I hope you are doing wonderful! I’ve followed you for a long time now.
    my question about calves is how many times I should do them, they are not as bad as the used to be but still not where I want them to be, I’ve been training for 12 years now i have my physique where I wanted and I don’t take any enhancement drugs only eat great Whole Foods which is the base for a great body I just don’t see my calves where I want them and I train them hard as fuck three times a week one day rest in between, I do low reps for the gastrocnemius and high reps for the souleus but I don’t know if I am doing this right or not or if I should change something. I’m more than willing to take them to the next level even if I can’t walk because of the pain but I want them fuckin huge. Sir if you could give me some advise would be great

      Bullshit, Steven... people who hike the Pacific crest Trail don’t get bigger calves, no one gets bigger calves from walking; not a single person on the planet ever has gotten bigger calves from walking.
