Ford Bronco Twin Stick install

  • The stock transfer case shifter on my Early Bronco is the "J shifter." The reason I want to switch to the twin stick is this gives me the ability to shift my transfer case independently. With my current j shifter I only have the option to go from 2wd to 4h or 4lo. With the twin stick I can engage just my front high and low, just my rear high and low, or both.
This is the twin stick I installed:
    tomsoffroad.com/parts/73-77-f...
    The shifter boot:
    tomsoffroad.com/parts/66-77-f...
    To install the twin stick:
    00:00 - Introduction
02:17 - Remove old transfer case shifter (I had to cut mine out)
    03:47 - Remove transfer case
04:31 - Cut shifter for twin stick
    05:52 - Reinstall Transfer Case
    06:01 - The struggle
09:11 - Install twin stick shifter
    10:24 - Finishing touches

Thank you for the content! I've watched your videos numerous times to help me figure out the next step to work on my "Little Burro that Could".

Wow, that was great!! In a good way it's nice to see I'm not the only one running into problems, haha. I did get lucky because the center floor cowling was being replaced and not installed yet and I actually ordered the right kit, lol. I just pulled mine out of the garage under it's own power for the first time last Saturday after being worked on for well over a year. It's still needs some tweaking here and there but there were no major problems. Next is the BG power steering kit. Hope to see you at the Super Celebration, we are flying out tomorrow. Woooooooooo!!!

I remember that grinding was daunting when I installed it. It was like “no going back” but it’s way better with twins.

    Awesome!

When I installed twin sticks on my dana 20, I had a problem with it not wanting to stay in gear. Granted mine was a t-shifter not a J so it may be different. But if you run into the same problem JB custom makes upgraded shift rails for a twin stick application on a dana 20.

Did you have to do anything internal to your Dana 20 to have front dig?

Do you still have the fitech in your bronco if not what made you get rid of it I ask because I’m at the end of the line with trying to fix the fitech and I’m just about to put a Holly Quick fuel pumper🤦🏾‍♂️

It sounds like the conversion to twin sticks from a J-shift is pretty straightforward. I have a T-shift and the last time I remember looking into the twin stick conversion, I seem to recall something about having to open up the transfer case and remove some internal parts to make the twin sticks work. If anyone has made that change, I'd be curious to know how difficult it was (or would be for someone like me, who knows next to nothing about the internal workings of transmissions and transfer cases). Does it just "sound" complicated?

T-handle is easy to convert to twin stick. Twin stick should have linkage to each shift rod. No cutting between shift rods. No internal to do, if you do remove internal pins between shift rods it allows you to have front and rear axles at different hi and low which will grenade your t-case. Can’t have rear in high and front in low or vice-versa “boom” lol. Also bolt to hold twin shifter is 1/2” or smaller with bushing, drill out for 1/2”. I did the complete rebuild on the dana 20, not difficult just keep organized.

I did the conversion too. If you decide to go with it, you can contact for some advice too. I would just recommend looking into getting the upgraded shift rails from JB custom that are specifically made for a twin stick application on a dana 20

So did you just have your C4 rebuilt I thought you were talking about going with a 4 speed automatic My C4 is leaking out of the shifter Seal would like to go ahead and make the proper changes and only do it once Any recommendations

I did have it rebuilt. I didn’t have time to re-gear my axles, build the 4r70w, and get new drive shafts. So for now, just rebuilding the C4 and the rest will be later

Curious if this can be done without removing the transfer case. Thank you.

Let me know when you figure it out 😂😂
No but seriously, I think it could, but you would need to make a hole big enough in your floor to cut the tab off the transfer case
