Hey Rad, from what I know he didn't stop working on the project, is probably some problem with the site or something. And he also released a 2.0 patch, wich proves that the mod isn't dead :)

As a non-modder/mapper, I am really happy with all my effort to the Half-Life 2 community. I worked all alone and I just want to say thank you.I will continue pathcing and updating the mod. i love how this guy says "god damn" it fits perfectly and has a real whack to it. i love it
Man, that lightning in Ravenholm doesn't look good at all, I have no idea what you see in it. Flashing the entire area for a solid second is less a cool effect but more so shows the limitations of the lighting engine. It reminds me of the randomly flickering lights in Doom 1 lol
Also, the part before the actual, original parts of the level didn't look very good either. I didn't play the mod, but it just seemed completely tacked-on and didn't add anything of substance. I say this without any ill intent, but I think it's fascinating how every single mod that just wants to slightly touch up a game still ends up adding something big which 100% does NOT fit. Like they just want to decorate a cake but decide to drop a rotisserie chicken on top because they actually got bored of the cake 3 hours ago.
The rest of the mod looked incredible, though. Highway 17 especially is very detailed.

Judging from what I just saw, I'm gonna LOVE this mod.
As for me, pitch black Ravenholm is such a great idea. Not only it has more horror factor to it now, but it is also understandable, since there is no way Father Grigori could keep the whole town lit up like in original.
I understand, that it's gonna be frustrating for most of the people, but I think it's really cool change.
Instead of it always being dim, having hyro power from the river/lake or something could be a way of justifying the electricity being on lol. Or else just add more Xen fauna with those glowey plants.
If you had the Episode 2 flashlight, it'd be fine.

i had blast playing this mod, it really feel like am playing a modern version of half life 2 . I really love how ZMA manged to mix the hl2 style while also adding the hla style on top of it. (Also for everyone who worried about the mod bening dead, dont worry ZMA is still working on the mod patching things, the just moved to gamebanana since zma doesnt like using moddb pages.)
Someone paired this mod with 50 other addons alongside HL2VR, and I gotta say it almost feels like an official Valve game
The whole time I was thinking damn I really want to play this in VR but it's probably not possible or very buggy, so I'm very curious that someone managed to do it.

I saw videos of this in VR and if I ever get a headset this is definitely the way I play half-life 2 on it.
You are right about the start of Ravenholm… I as a level designer/environment artist/lighting artist was playing and got disappointed at how it was created, it was dragged out for a bit too long, too dark and it was just walking around in darkness for the most part. Also highway 17 has some problems, it has for some reason roads on the bottom of the sea 🤔
Glad you reviewed this mod! I honestly feel like the Ravenholm Chapter might be slightly more bearable if you play with MMOD on top of this, that way you can use your flashlight more efficiently. Still doesn't excuse the pitch black lighting tho,
Highway 17 is probably the best part of the OG cinematic mod. The added buuldings and destroyed highway bridges gives it this American-Portland vibe I loved.

Honestly I'd love an even more stripped back version that gets rid of the HD textures and drastic time of day changes (I do want the rainy somber vibe back from the late beta back though, major S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Dark Interval vibes) so it's only more detailed in the "amount of geometry on screen" way. Like Half-Life 2 if Valve weren't knee-capped by 2004 PC restrictions. It would feel much more cohesive visually since there isn't a disparity between texture resolutions and individual model poly counts.

I heard like a lot of people complaining that it was broken as hell on launch so much to the point that the triggers were visible on all of the maps
I played on launch and didn't run into bugs where triggers were visible but it was very buggy, still was cool to play through. Probably the worst offender from what I experienced was Ravenholm because a lot of traps were outright nonfunctional and the thunderstorm effects looked unfinished.
The "visible triggers" bug happens when the mod isn't installed properly.
Feels a bit weird seeing a bunch of HL:Alyx stuff there (it still has an obvious "half life vibe", but it's a different one that's slightly more dark or less gritty or something) but otherwise that looks like a solid 8/10 remaster, much better than most.

To be honest I thought this was going to be that HL2 remaster we heard about like a year ago and then never again.
I'm not sure making City 17 livelier and busier is a good thing, I think HL2 was aiming for to show more of a dead city that reflected how barren life for citizens there was.
That start of Ravenholm is quite like the 1000 yard stare meme. Also that lightning effect is weak as hell not gonna lie.
That post-Ravenholm area gives me vibes like a photo of the sky a breakcore track would use or something. Strangely calming which is not that fitting for the setting.
I do like that Highway 17 look, I think nighttime could make it look cooler but I get the fact that cannot be.
This mod gives me the vibe of one of those really cool HL2RP servers on garrysmod that would actually decorate its maps with props to make it feel lived in

Looks cool, there are many cool upcoming mods such as lights out mod then there is the inverted mod and the other that expands the levels to allow for "detours" from the main path.

Yeah, this looks fantastic. It nails that perfect balance of being true to the original artstyle while being much more visually interesting, but without becoming cluttered.
Shame it's dead now. Valve ought to get this guy on board to release this to HL2 as an official update.

The Ravenholm chapter definitely needs more work, the lack of light, the crappy gmod horror map lightning, I understand Ravenholm is the spooky zombie town but removing all the lights and adding the haunted house ride lightning doesn't make it scarier

Honestly, I would like to see some new gameplay mods instead of another visual mod. Yes, I know about MMod, I played the hell out of it for both HL1 and 2, but maybe something different would be nice too. Like, some different style of gameplay mod. And I remember that there were tactical version of MMod in development but it looks like it is no longer active. And it would be cool to try to play Half-Life 2 with tactical style gameplay. I also wonder, how come nobody made a brutal mod for Half-Life 2 lol. I mean, Doom got one for decades, Duke Nukem 3D got one, Wolfenstein 3D got one too, including Half-Life 1 that was also brutalized, but not Half-Life 2.

You should check out the "HRCS" maps on the Garry's Mod Workshop. They're hefty and will take up 60GB if you have every single one, but it's what a true "updated Half-Life 2" should have been. It stands for "High Resolution Cubemaps & Shadows", and also expands on a lot of environmental details without changing any of the gameplay related bsp. It looks truly amazing to have a proper HDR version of Half-Life 2 with updated lighting.
BBL Drizzy has to be the intro from now on.
Would this actually work with MMod? I imagine dropping extra changes on an already unstable bugged mod could be... hurty. Though also sounds like a perfect pairing with both gameplay and level design getting a refresh.

Hey rad, I am current working on a mod called half life 2 alone mod, it's pretty self explanatory. That explanation sounds abit boring but it's better then it sounds. I was wondering if you could give it a review thanks
Half-Life a very important part of my life. And i am thankfull to everyone who keeps this universe alive! ❤
The Fakefactory Cinematic mod, was pretty cool imo. It got a bit overloaded and cluttered, but i liked it, also because it changed the asthetics of the game to an unrecognizable state, that was refreshing. But for me the vanilla version is the best and its fits this game the best. The og. Source engine is cold, props and details are scarse. While games like Far Cry used engines, that welcomed you with warm, juicy and saturated colours, that made you feel cozy, and when not under fire you felt like on a vacation, the Source Engine of HL² has something unsettling. Even when you stop somewhere on Highway 17, you walk on a piece of gras and watch the sea, there are no enemies in the near, but you still feel somehow observed and uncomfortable, which is also a form of beauty.
It fits the atmosphere and the story of the game perfectly. When i played HL:Alyx i missed this cold atmosphere. City 17 felt really different and a less hostile place. It felt being full of life, while in HL² everything felt dead and abandoned. Fake Factory Remaster looks like a downgrade from the Cinematic mod, like a compromis between the vanilla Source engine and Cinematic Mod. It's too less for a whole brand new experience, but too much to keep the cold atmosphere. The Trainstation for example looks cold but cluttered. Too many unrealisticly large cables hang on the walls, waiting houses are unrealisticly large for the platforms. Also giant metal structures like on 4:52 look out of proportion. That's why it doesn't hit my taste. But i could imagine, that this will find way more fans than Cinematic mod. The shifting of daytime is however a nice gimmick. Also pitchblack Ravenholm feels more realistic, but there should be a solution for the flashlight problem.
At the moment i replay HL² Update, it's just like an updated version of the Source engine. The most what i notice, are sharper shadows, and some places feel a bit brighter and warmer. But even that is already too much change for me. I think i will stick with the og. or even better with some ß-version 😄
And thanks to the whole community we keep getting releases, no matter if HL2 RTX, Decay or PC ports of Half-Life 2: Survivor, where everyone can choose his perfect version of Half-Life and Half-Life² 💪💪

on launch im getting a white screen and shortly after the error message "Can't find background image materials/console/startup_loading .vtf"
Some things I don't like, but this is quite interesting to look into. I know it can be considered "polishing a turd" when it comes to remastering whatever Fake Factory had done with his work, but I do like the effort with making a compromise in this! Do hope it can be improved time to time since this has potential. Sorry for the creator having to close down the ModDB page.

The lightning/thunder in Ravenholm just looks like someone grabbed the camera setting of toneMapScale and just made it 100 for a couple seconds then made it normal again. 9:31 In realistic thunder,the tree would have a shadow since the light is coming from the sky. The tree i'm talking about is the tree that the crosshair is on. But here it just looks like mat_fullbright 1 or you turned the light on in a room. The thunders light looks exactly like how it would look like if you turned the lights on and off in a big dark (ceiling low) room.
Thunders light also would not be completly white. Real life thunder light is a tad bit purple-blue ish. But here it's just 255 R 255 B 255 G (a.k.a completely white).
Edit: The lightning really does look like turning on and off a rooms lightbulb. Real life thunder doesn't like...do that. It goes dark and bright dark and bright constantly like a flicker.
Its freaking 2004 source engine. How much accurate light simulation do you want?

I was very disappointed with this mod, Ravenholm was a perfect example of good level design, but he changed stuff that didn't need to be changed, so it went from good level design to very bad level design. Also the mines looked like it just entered minecraft's nether.
This mod is also very dark for no reason at all, like there are areas that are way too dark, and having the hl2 flashlight version doesn't help. I think it just shows that this mod wasn't playtested.
Also, in my opinion saying that only one person was working on it doesn't justify, he could always delay it and polish it up. He released from pressure of the community which brings another point.
I don't think the creator was very prepared to deal with people, he left moddb because people were being mean, and that he prefers gamebanana because people don't heavily criticism him there. I also complained that the mod didn't want to extract, and he responded it wasn't their fault I didn't watch the tutorial, like? I can't even extract? how am I going to install it.
Days later I figured out that the mod is so huge that I was running out of space on my temp folder trying to export it. So I had to manually extract the mod by parts and yet some textures still got corrupted in the process. Which brings another issue.
This mod is a zip bomb, sorry if it sounds mean, but its true. 29gb in a single zip is very problematic, and the fact that I have to overwrite my hl2 install with 29gb doesn't help, this should've been a standalone mod, which I think it comes from the modder being inexperienced with source modding.
There are also my custom creations in my hl2 folder, and I don't want to make a fresh install just to remove the mod.
My suggestions to the creator is to convert this mod to a sourcemod and to separate the mod in various zips to avoid having issues in the extraction. Also fix the level issues.
Original was around 54-5 GB.

I would recommend installing HL2 mods into HL2 Update. Haven't tried this one yet though

My main nitpick with just about ALL of these fan-remakes and remasters is that they too often clutter the world with so many props, that it becomes pointlessly difficult to "read" the game. With thousands of fake doors, gates, vents, all those extra hanging wires and pipes, etc, the actual intended path and things you're meant to interact with become needlessly difficult to spot from all the rubbish. There's also an argument to be made that the "oldschool" minimalistic map design was on purpose, with most of the mankind's materials being harvested and confiscated to weaken them. Also, it is very bizarre for me to hear HL2 be called an "early 00s game" and then call the mod "a PS3 era lookalike", when HL2 came out in 2004, and PS3 literally dropped a mere year later.

so i'm having this problem after installing: when loading a map, it effectively loads but the screen stays locked on the loading bar. also happens when loading thru the console. anyone knows how to fix this?
