I'm disappointed that I overlooked this one. The cast did a great job. Darren was an unnerving character and it's a good example of a story that's intriguing because you aren't sure how far things will go.

This tale gave me the DEEP CREEPS. As a kid, you’re encouraged to be kind to the outcast, but sometimes they’re an outcast for a good reason. I rarely stay awake til the end of a CP, but I couldn’t stop listening to this one. Superb writing & narration.
This story reminds me of the movie " The Good Son".
I dont like the idea of kids killing each other but the euphoria i felt knowing the SOB Darren got it in the end after what he did was amazing. Im upset the protagonist didn't get his side proven tho

Mom: Hey, sweetie. You know that lonely, eccentric boy whose home life is a complete mystery to me? Well, I talked to his dad on the phone once and now trust his family alone with you for hours.
Boy: Mom, his parents and grandma are never around, he assaulted me and broke my Gameboy, he pretends mannequins are his parents, and I’m pretty sure he tried to kill my friend who beat him up last week.
Mom: How dare you tell me such horrible lies! Look how polite he is, always answering the door whenever I go to his house, always picking up his phone for his busy family. Now show him some respect!

Damn that story was frustrating, but I'm glad that psycho brat is no more! Normally in these kind of stories the bad guy gets no consequence (which is realistic but still frustrating) so I was glad when this story decided to be different.

I really wanted know what happened to parents
Honestly my thought is they were probably abusive (where did he learn how to hit people, break their things, and try to murder them as punishment?) and he got revenge one day and just killed his grandma (dad was I think in prison? If temporarily out, probably got him too). And by then between the trauma of how he was treated and the fact that he killed his parents he kind of had a mental break.
Kid needed some serious help but nobody listened so.. yah. Another kid's life was also ruined and his was ended.

I think OP meant whether Benjamin is actually the villain and doesnt really know it. Like in a psychological way that makes him block out certain things and view others actions as attacks against him. Like maybe we find out later that Benjamin pushed his own mom down the stairs b/c she wouldnt listen to him or buy him a new gameboy, then he imagines Darren saying he did it. Its possible Benjamin had a psychotic break and we dont know it because we got his side of the story.

I mean, I'm probably overthinking it, but the end part where a statue was made for Darren and he wanted to destroy it made me think he has a psychological problem. He was 9 yrs old when this things happened to him. Also, the notion of him feeling satisfied when Pete his friend almost beat someone to death. I think for some reason he was somewhat delusional of things and blames everything bad that happened to Darren.

I know this is just a story but goddamn it if I don’t despise those same type of stupid parents who don’t listen to their children especially when they tell them something is wrong and that uncle Johnny asked them to have a wrestling match in the closet. I honestly don’t feel bad for the mom in this story, again, I know it’s fiction, but it doesn’t trigger that emotional response as the listener, mainly because she’s that type of parent I hate. Is it just me or was every adult really stupid.

Near the end the narrator said that he lost his best friend. I don’t remember hearing anything happening to his friend? Who was the friend, did I miss something?-
The kid named Pete (the 5th grader with the body of an 8th grader) Pete offered to "bash in his face" and Darren brooded until he saw Pete's new bike. Darren took Pete's helmet and loosened the front wheel of the bike, causing Pete to lose the wheel when he did a wheelie. Pete flew over the handlebars and hit his head hard - he ended up in the hospital and never fully recovered.
I'm sorry to be answering you 6 months after you asked. I heard this story about a year ago, in a compilation. I forgot to save it, but I remembered this story and have been looking for it ever since. I finally found it! yay!
