    Ahead of Newcastle's match against Brighton, The Soccer Saturday panel discussed Eddie Howe and Newcastle United with the panel questioning the magpies' owners handling of the search for a new manager.
    Former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe agreed a deal in principle to become the new Newcastle manager on a two-and-a-half-year contract but it's understood discussions are still ongoing regarding his backroom staff.

    Merson is the last person who should be questioning whether someone has a clue or not. Howe hasn't been sitting on his arse while he's been out of work. He was over in Spain at both Athletico and Rayo Vallecano picking the brains of their managers, and observing their training methods. He also spent the time reviewing what went wrong in his final season at Bournemouth, and looking how he could improve any weaknesses in his training methods and tactics. I'm sure Merson can't even comprehend that level of work ethic, given that he's not even done the minimal amount of research into what Howe's been up to before opening his mouth.
    As for Staveley and the people running the club, they've definitely made mistakes, but given how suddenly the takeover happened, this far into the season, without any structures in place, it's understandable. Ashley literally left a skeleton crew keeping the club running, so untangling the mess he's left in his 15 years of neglect was always going to take a lot of time. As for Hendrie he's probably actually worse than Merson for the amount of shite he talks about Newcastle fans and what we supposedly expect. Merson you at least feel a bit sorry for, given he's likely fried his brain with all the coke.

    I’m glad the comments have more sense than the pundits. But I’ve got a few points to make:
    1. “They’re all over the place”. This is speculation. We simply don’t know what the state the club is in at the top level. All we know is that it’s taking the owners a while to appoint a new manager. They shouldn’t be spreading misinformation like this.
    2. (Would the Newcastle fans warm to the appointment of Eddie Howe) “I don’t think so”. This point probably comes from us being linked with Conte, Emery, Ten Harg. These are top managers which really shouldn’t be managing a relegation threatened side, and it does feel like a step down when you’re being linked with managers that really shouldn’t be at that club. However with Howe, Newcastle will play a more attractive style that’ll excite the fans. That’ll instantly get Newcastle fans to love him. They haven’t had a manager like that since Keegan.
    3. “Newcastle fans expect to be somewhere which they’re not. And that is the problem” Classic Newcastle criticism. It’s the fans fault. They should just accept mediocrity and relegation. It’s a very unfair criticism, and there are two reasons why. 1) No fanbase should accept mediocrity and below, they should be able to believe that their team can reach a higher level. 2) Newcastle’s expectations have been lowered. They’ve been lowered for 15 years. They’re not delusional. They know that relegation is very likely. They just want to be entertained and be in the premier league. So then they can build something that can win something in the future.

    For anyone from the future, 18 months later we are in the Champions league. Eddie Howe did brilliantly; Graham Jones is still working at the club in Eddie's team. All those players who have been said to be all over the place, Big Joelinton, Miggi Almiron, Murphy, Sean Longstaff, Krafth, St. Maxi, Wilson, all did brilliantly. We escaped relegation and finished the first season in 11th. We did not buy Messi or any of those primadonnas. It was actually, Big Dan Burn (a Geordie from Brighton), Chris Wood, Tripps, Matt Targett from Villa, and Bruno from Lyon. Next season added Alex Isak and Sven Botman and Nick Pope all decent players who did amazingly well for us. What a time to be a toon fan. Eddie is still here but the leader of the above panel left his job. It became too much for him I guess.

  • @Hawks1980
    @Hawks1980 Před 2 lety +6

    Where to start with this rebuttal…We absolutely welcome Howe’s appointment, he is exactly the manager we need right now. This season and next is all about consolidation in the PL and avoiding relegation, before we even think about top 10. We expect players to be brought in that can shore up the defence and improve the midfield, absolutely not the elite stars of football. The media is peddling that line, not the fans or the club. The media, equally have linked us with every manager under the sun, not the fans or the club. Choice came down to two Emery and Howe, Emery didn’t come off and was a mess as there are too many leaks to the press. These pundits are putting words and actions in our mouths which are completely contrary to fact.

They're in the championship now which is as far as they probably should've gone, I'm sure all their fans are greatful for what he did. I'd love for EH to rebuild the foundations of our club even if it temporarily costs us our Premier league spot, then hopefully it'll kick-start a new era of competitiveness in all competitions at the highest level.
