  • I have heard people say that sections of the score for Avatar were from Glory and Titanic (myself included). Here are two examples of how both scores are very similar.
I am not putting the movie down for this. I loved Avatar as well as Glory and Titanic (I'm a Cameron fan). Although I would have liked to hear an entirely new sounding score, I still think the score was well.
done and I enjoyed it. I think both Titanic and Glory have great scores as well (I'm a James Horner fan).
I claim no rights to the music or images in this video.

With Avatar he perfected his distinct style

I noticed it when watching Avatar, I *knew* I'd heard it before. These guys compose several films at a time and have huge teams of uncredited assistants writing music for them behind the scenes as well. It's not a pretty biz for aspiring composers.

James Horner has a style that he continues (I like it)

Who cares if they sound alike. It's the same composer who has a distinct style which is brilliant. It's like Hans Zimmer's music for Gladiator and Pirates of the Caribbean sound the same in parts, but no one cares.

Give me a break! Yeah- he composed all these movies. That's WHY they share a theme. He's a master. Why wouldn't he use the instruments, chord make-up and progressive track that he knows so well.
His orchestrations can be played, and within seconds you know it's his. Just like any skilled composer.
It's the same in everything. Look at Picasso. Van Gogh. Shakespeare. Tchaikovsky. ..and any current pop star.
This topic is trite. It's brought forward only by those who think themselves clever.

it's basically the same tune that he kept churning out film after film, with a few little tweaks, but if it isn't broken, don't fix it, great films

There's similarities, but it doesn't bother me one bit! All artists have a style and a mood that makes them who they are. No different than visual artists who have a certain style and mood that you actually expect to recognize and is also what they're hired for. You don't hire James Horner, because you want something that sounds like John Williams etc.

There are also some parts in Avatar which sound exactly like "Enemy of the Gates"

Why change a winning formula? I don't get the problem. Look at pop music. It's his style.

@MichaelJacksonFan000 exactly, but because of how much everyone was comparing the two film scores before Avatar even came out, it's sort of funny that he chose those two notes, don't you think? i think horner's just lazy and bored now.

@torukmakto4, I don't know if you have experience working with Horner, but I know numerous composers, all of them high-level and the ghost writing is an accepted part of the business. Hopefully Horner does credit those who contribute to his scores... many don't. There is no guild to protect composers like writers have the WGA. Personally, I think repeats and re-treads of material shows a lack of imagination whether you're a writer, composer, fine artist whatever...

Either it's his unoriginality or him putting in little things or excerpts people have heard or cried to (my heart will go on cough cough) to give an added emotion to the music. I thought the Avatar soundtrack was brilliant. I still blast that, Apollo 13, and The Perfect Storm whenever I get the chance. In the end, he wrote the music to the two highest grossing movies ever. So either way, he's pretty well off regardless.
