Bobcat1 is outer pitch first, and the greatest tent of all time 💪
Came to say this, I’ve the Phoxx1 OG and the bobcat and the bobcat is far superior in comfort especially if you have to spend some time in it because of dark nights or rain. Its nice to sit up rather than lie down to eat in a 1man, no indigestion 😂
Yeah for the bobcat1.
I have the bobcat. I love it so much I have put it into semi-retirment .. I don't want it wearing out..
I just used a phoxx in my last vid. I was glad the weather was good. No room. Great for bikepacking or through hikes. No good for me. I’m looking at vango tents and there’s a Coleman tent I like. It’s considered heavy though. But the weight doesn’t bother me. So these things need to be considered. Weight. Space. Waterproofing. Ease of pitch. It’s a non answerable question but I like to read the comments for ideas. I’m tent mad. As are we all 😂😂😂😂. Atb.
Have you looked at the oex bobcat!
@@spotsandstripes2 it’s not for me that tent.
On through hikes you can't choose the weather. Long hikes are planned months in advance.
@@bcamping1 I reckon a little lightweight tarp would solve it all.
@@AndyWardle A tarp? ? ? Walk 10-14 hours a day and then sleep with ticks, mosquitos, ants and the rest of them every night. I wouldn't enjoy it.
I've recently bought the Alpkit Tarpstar 1....it's a trekking pole tent and the outer can be pitched first on its own or the inner can be added. Strictly its an inner first but the inner is for 1 person or you can buy the inner for 2 persons...the outer is huge yet the whole thing is less than 1kg.
Huge inside area for kit, cooking etc separate from the inner. Brilliant tent and huge.
I’ve got the Vango Nevis and for £85 it’s a brilliant value tent, never let me down, fly is attached and can pitch it together in 5mins…… for the money can’t be beaten
I got the Highlander one man. I was too long/tall for it. I stayed at Tan Hill and it rained overnight. Got soaked getting out. Never used it again.
My Vango Nevis 100 is outer pitch first. You can even keep the inner connected and just pitch them together. Fairly roomy as well. I had an OEX Phoxx 1 and had to sell it as it was too snug, even for a five foot nothing female😅
Wild country helm 1 or 2 depending on what space you want, not much difference in weight. Will last you years and Terra nova customer service is spot on 👍
Bobcat is a outer pitch 1st.
Good stuff as always dan mate 👍
I've been looking at there tents
@@englishwoodsman cracking Tents Dan mate can't recommend em highly enough, even The zephyros compact 1 is a solid tent can get it for £160 at the minute wiv free footprint.
But the Helm compact 2 has to be my favourite tent I own
@@englishwoodsmanIf you want to pitch outer 1st, grab yourself some thin cordage and tie it in the shape of the bathtub, normally a rectangle, then tie loops at each point where it meets the poles (instead of tying loops I drilled a hole in a washer and popped the pole into the washer centre)
I've got a grade A army surplus Dutch 1 man and wouldn't use anything else! Fantastic, seriously heavy duty best I've ever used!👍
Thanks for taking the time to do this mate 👍🏻
Cheers, useful comparison of something I hadn’t thought about. Thanks.
Great examples Dan , should be very helpful to newcomers , and more experienced campers both , ever thought about getting into tarp shelter designs you can make many shapes of shalters , and with a mesh inner tent , can have any layout that suits you at the time ! ? , Be Well my Friend .👍
Terra Nova Laser 1 all in one pitch, side entry. Downside cost. Thanks Dan for all your work and passion
Cracking lightweight tent mate 👍 Can't go wrong with Terra nova/ wild country. All I use these days
I always go back to my laser 1 greatctent , really good for pitching in tight stealthy spots
Back in the day, I had a mountain Wing one by Mountain Hardware. It worked out well for me. I prefer a side door and two doors when it's practical. Thanks.
Very informative Thanks for sharing
Great review brother, keep up the good work. God bless you and your family, and happy camping 🏕 😀 😊 🙏. Lee
I have an old Gelert which is the same as the Phoxx 1 in the video and my biggest issue is that it is so low i couldn't drink my beer in the tent because I couldn't tip it back far enough. 🤣
The other issue with getting in and out is if it’s raining or has been raining - you really don’t want to be brushing your clothing past wet door areas. One day someone will design the perfect porch!
Outdoor Vital tent all day. The side entry and the large Vestibule is perfect. Love free (semi) standing tents, easy set up. Lee...
Couldn't agree more!
Nicely thought out and presented. As an old camper, I have had this style or that style of tent. I look not only at means of entry but also at being able to sit up inside. Wind, rain, and misery: a 'telescope' style of low tent provides such welcome shelter. A person DOES NEED to have a Kindle reader or some entertainment to fight the tedium of being inside on a rainy day. In bad weather, meals mean 'energy bars' more or less.
Hello Dan I do like all of your one man tents my advice is for anyone is to do your research in what kind of one person tent you want I like the vick one
Thank you for sharing this
I’ve tried so many but keep on going back to my 2 man tunnel. I just feel I love the space 🙈
I have been waiting all day to watch this.
So far I’m happy with my Vango Banshee pro 200, but I’m getting to the stage I want a bit more space to chill out in, great video Dan 👍🏻 I look forward to the next one 🏕️.
Vango Halo 300 .?
@@bobhead6243 I’ve never tried the Vango Halo 300, I’ll have to look that one up. Cheers 🍻
I'm looking for my 1st small tent, this was very interesting, thank you 👍
Side entry, and a tent u can sit up in 95 to 100cm head height , something like the outdoor vital or terra nova laser comp 1 design , there's loads of different tent companies doing similar same design 👍
English, great review buddy.👍
Fantastic video, this is how to review stuff 👍👍
Really good watch cheers mate
All depends on when you're going to use it. If its summer and spending lots more time outside, then a bivy style is better. I. The winter, then one you can sit up in as you'll be spending more time in it.
Loving the look of the phoxx. I think that'd be ideal for when I decide to jump on my bike go for a ride and then just decide here will do. Nice and low, green to blend in and compact. I don't use air mats and only have a 2season bag this time of year so not massive. So yes I think ideal size for just me... Different story when got my dog id probably need a 4 man tent 😂
Naturehike Cloud Peak 2 . Always come back to it.
Nice advice 👍
Quite agree with your assessment, especially the 3rd choice because not only is the entrance easier, I would think it is easier to control condensation?
However, the choice for a 1 man tent considers how is it transported=weight and size, price, and for how many consecutive days it'll be used for. Just my two pennies worth.
Thanks for your point of view, obviously this is a theme for many.
Great video Dan, very good idea to compare these - you are dead right, small one man tents are often difficult to get in and out of, this was a really useful vid, thanks for making it. Ive a Coleman Ellipse which has the inner and outer clipped together so you can pitch them together, but its no longer made. Its a great tent though.
I use the Robens arrowhead, great little tent easy to pitch and only 1.5kg, perfect for me as I'm 68 and light weight is important for me as is the cost, these days most of my backpacking, wild camping is done in the Cairngorms. I'm a new subscriber and I really love your channel.
great review dan enjoyed that it somethink not a lot of people consider until its to late and they,ve bought the tent and then moan what a faff it is to get into me personally think its all about getting out there under canvas and enjoying the great outdoors. just a question do you have a video on the trousers and clothing you wear and why do you wear them ?
From my 1st tent I learned the the manufacturers multiply the capacity by two. Another explanation is they assume the average hiker is 5 feet zero inches and your pack is collapsible…😊!
Have a great day!
I’m 6ft 4, I’m not aware of a 1 manner that I’d consider. I use a bivy bag when it suits the weather and a 2man the rest of times when I want some inside space. Can’t think of scenario a 1 man tent would be useful. Thanks for taking the time to produce this vid though Dan
Robens starlight 1 is outer first and a great little tent
Bobcat 1 tent is also a good one for getting in and out of.
The onlt one man tent maker I can think of who makes a range of " pitch in one " tents , Is Vango , example The Banshee i man .🤔
Thanks bob
Vango tents are belting for the price.
@@theozzy4717 I have the 3 man Halo Geodesic , great 3 /4 season tent .
@@bobhead6243 I'm looking to get a top notch Vango 4 season tent. 😁 I'd have to trade in the three Vangos that I already have though🤣

Ey up me duck.
I have to agree with you on this one Dan and I've been looking for a decent lightweight tent more akin to your Outdoor Vitals one.
Ay a good'un me owd. 👍🙂
I really need to get the outdoor vitals dominion 2
@@englishwoodsman
I'll have to check that one out buddy 👍
Naturehike Spider 1 can be outer pitch first, though not super easy doing so. Easy to get in as well, though porch is pretty small. Overall a cracking little tent though.
I believe you can pitch the Outdoor Vitals tent outer 1st when it's rainy. I think you need to buy the footprint for it though mate. Lee...
Lanshan 1 can be outer and Inner together. Or either outer in its own or inner on its own.
I'm kind of a big guy, 6ft 3 250. I've never been super comfortable in a one-man tent thus far, so I have always just carried the extra weight for a 2-person tent when I wasn't using a hammock.
Never tried a "one man tent" (can't afford them) maybe one day😉), but HAVE had alot of good times with a tarp-setup.
Great video. Thanks for the tips
(one day😁👍🏻🤞🏻)
Wild Country Helm One Compact. Best one man tent @ 1.7kg and pitches all together.
I always think of one man tents as human " dog " kennels ! 😂🙂
Poor dogs 🐕

My Hilleberg Akto is pitch all in 1 or outer first
with side entrance doors you could make up your own Groundsheet Section to fit the gap between inner door and outer door when closed , that would help to keep your legs and feet dry when getting in 👍
Cool idea!
@@englishwoodsman Have Tarp the size of mine , I can make all kinds of shelters , with some having enough space to sleep 7 /8 people under if nesassary . my favourite is the Teepee style , with bug net inner .
Hello Dan. From Canada. 🇨🇦.
Hi mate
Helm 1 compact is all in one pitch 👍
Helm Compact 1 pitches inner and outer together. T'would be great if you could test this one. 👍🏻
Hi, Dan the jack wolfskin exolight is outer pitch first
That's me off to look now 🤣🤣
I have an old blackthorn highlander. Very lightweight, good for long distance hiking . Only 1.5 kg. But its small. Damn small.
Sound advice EW.
I am surprised you didn't include the Bobcat though, it's probably the most talked about 1 man tent in years
Dan featured the equipment he owns.
The Nordisk telemark 1 pitches outer and inner together.
Great video mate. I wonder what would you say, is the best budget 2 man tent for a newbie. I can't afford luxury top end, as I lost my job a while back, so price is key, over quality tbh. I'll only go on 2 night, 3 season trips. Thanks in advance. Andy 👍
What about the oex Bobcat 1?
the useage decides what design is best. if you are on a mountain summit and it gets bad in the night, really bad i would prefer to be in the phox 1. strange to say that for myself as i couldn't live with it, but in that situation i would feel more security in that one.
Thanks
Your very welcome
That phoxx 1 tent looks great for a stealthy type tent.
Phoxx 2 is better and bigger
I have three one person tents!!. All are outer pitch first, all are tall enough for me to sit up!!. I need to be able to sit up..
Good info Dan,quick question what's your favourite naturehike tent you've used?
3ful gear taiji
@@englishwoodsman cracking tent! Brought the nightcat version currently modding it for 4 season
@@chmcage the 3ful gear Taiji or almost identical to the night cat one
@@englishwoodsman they are identical e-mailed 3f ul gear said the 4 season inner should fit,so buying that when I've saved enough and gonna try add extra guy line tabs to the poles
Hi Dan , looking younger without the beard lol ... Iv'e got the Wild Country Helm compact 2 similar to the outdoor vitals tent, inner and outer pitch together and around the same price. A 2 door tent which I climb in forward and come out forward . Suits me, bit heavier but why pick a light tent and take 7 cans of beer lol
Outdoor vitals seems a bit less claustrophobic too
Bobcat by oex is wide front open and has enough height to sit up in ..
Its hands down the best 1man tent imo.. there’s even a video where its the last tent standing while 2 VERY expensive tents ended up shredded in harsh conditions!
Ha ha. What video was that then ??
@@AndyWardle it’s titled ‘ Budget camping triumph: OEX Tent outshines Scarp 1 - Winter storm & Hilleburg pole bends ‘ by Ant survive the night
You said it’s not the tent for you in other comments.. how come?
@@spotsandstripes2 too small really. I’ve seen the video you mention. The hille had a tiny bend in the pole. It wasn’t “shredded” 😂 the scarp wasn’t pitched properly that’s why it ripped. The bobcat is ok. But don’t be fooled into thinking it’s equal to a high end tent. It’s dangerous to think like that. I’ve camped with ant. 🐜. He says the same. 👍
Vango helium f10 1 person
Thanks Dan. Always good videos. Cheers 🍻 mate.
Bobcat 1 is outer pitch first but I found it claustrophobic . just after buying a hyena 2 for a bit more space but you would need to be on good terms with the company
Hyena 2. Fibre glass poles❌ needs more guylines. Other than that. Good tent. It’s a 2 man tent though. 3kgs as well.
@@AndyWardle one of my poles cracked the first time I used the bobcat.just shortened it where it slid into the next one.lost about 30mm
@@AndyWardle My Halo 300 is 3.4 kg and is 3 man 3/4 season .
@@bobhead6243 I was looking at a halo. Looks good like. The weight doesn’t bother me at all. I just like a bit space and protection 👌 vangos are good tents.

I think I need a 4 man tent minimum size 😊to be comfortable
Bobcat !
I believe u should get a 2 man tent for comfort, for the sake of the little extra weight it's worth it..
A one man tent is 2 man tent in reality. Mine's a Blackthorn from Blacks and it's for cycle camping but I put a tarp in from and a floor down.
That's one of my next videos
English woodsman well said as always honest and truthful ❤ simple as that
Lanshan 1?
Nah, I only go for 2 man tents for plenty of room on bad weather days!
Great job m8 I have a bobcat 1 amazing and a salamander amazing also!!! I have just purchased a mountain wearhouse backpacking 1 person single skin tent side entrance just under a KG rrp £95 in the sale £49 such a big 1 person tent single hoop check it out😊

Hi Dan lanshan
I would get in and out one leg at a time 😂 haha- nice tents you should cook steak in these videos
Cheers Dan. Top bloke😊
iam 6ft5 iam no way getting in there lol
Excellent advice for newcomers, Dan. You've helped me along the way in tent decision making, along with many other youtube campers. Thank you.
I've recently got back into camping over the last year. Started off on a budget with the OEX Bobcat 1 which was great, but being 6ft1 I found it a bit too constricting in those colder, winter month's when it gets dark early. Almost a perfect tent if not for my height. I would sell it, but i just don't want to part with it!
I then upgraded to a 2 (well 1.5) person tent, which was the Terra Nova Pioneer 2. It's a terrfic tent, so much room for one person and all their gear, but I wanted something just a little cheaper, smaller for when I get back into wild camping / backpacking and for those rougher terrains (the Pioneer 2 I'll mostly reserve for campsites haha).
So, I eventually opted for the Wild Country Helm 1. It still has so much space in the sleeping area, and I love that extra porch on the otherside which is big enough to store a backpack, shoes, etc. It is like a tardis, looks small on the outside, but spacious for a one person when inside. Plus being freestanding, it can be moved if an area is too tight. Packs up really small as well in the backpack. It is also an all in one pitch with the inner connected to the outer.
I really like your content. It has inspired me to have a go at wild camping. I like especially that you use affordable gear thats more accessible to most people. Would you consider doing a video on wild camping backpacks? What size to go for in order to fit all the necessary gear in for a one nighter. Anyway, keep going with the good content. Cheers.
