Season 2 Episode 6: Robert Hansen's aggression toward women led to run-ins with the legal system most of his life. But when he moved to Anchorage his behavior turned deadly as he became a serial rapist and killer who tortured and literally hunted his victims in the wilds of Alaska. But his public behavior and job in a bakery frequented by many police officers made him seem an unlikely suspect until the FBI applied behavioral profiling.
The FBI Files is an American docudrama that takes a look behind the scenes of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's crime laboratory.
Real FBI cases are recounted through reenactments and interviews, due to the sensitive nature of the show, viewer discretion is advised.
She describes the car, picks out the dude in a photo, describes the house, provides the neighborhood, remembers the airport & plane, security gets the license plate but they were willing to suspend the investigation. Ok, sounds good to me.

Certain episodes and stories from Unsolved Mysteries have stuck with me. I am grateful to have found them here on CZcams. Not only do I get to relive and refresh my memories about certain stories; but I'm now also able to provide the links to much younger co-workers and fellow dancers who were not even around during the series' original run. Finally; you will never find anyone who could host and narrate the stories the way Robert Stack could.
Part of what you're talking about could be a fascination with shocking stories combined with the process of how they were eventually solved.
I believe there is also the factor of the quality of today's television programming being diluted with too many channels and not enough quality programs.

Thank God for Cindy Paulson, the brave girl who escaped before being forced into Hansen's plane, and thank God for Officer Baker, the cop who believed her. This guy Hansen has to be one of the worst serial killers in my lifetime. What a complete monster. This bloke is everyone's true nightmare.

Maxine Farrell from the Anchorage police department was the first female detective that put this case together her superiors laughed at her when she put the first 10 victims together.. Telling her there was no serial killer. When they realised she was right. They sat on it. And later a team somewhere else was put together after some investigation they realised Maxine had first put it together 2 years prior they requested that Maxine be part of their team but her sergeant at the Anchorage police department wouldn't let her go or be involved with the investigation.. So she just handed over all her files and research. And watched from a distance.

It's a good ol' boys club, like many other police forces are. They will dismiss a woman's work at first, only to take credit when she turns out to be correct; this s**t happens all the time, as I'm sure you know.
Then i would like to thank her for figuring this out. Sgt. Baker probably knows the truth.
I haven't watched these in years. At 15 I'd be up half the night watching and it was this that inspired me to become a forensic scientist I currently have a place at uni studying for this outcome.

Im 14 and have been absolutely abssesed with police work and investigation work for a while but only recently started rlly wanting to after a bit of an ordeal i helped with. Its all kinda crazy but so interesting
God Bless Officer Baker who didn't give up on these poor victims "whose lifestyle left much to be desired" And shame on the police who didn't seem to mind that a killer was hunting, raping and killing topless dancers!!! All police should follow Officer Baker's example.
The police was formed to keep the elite's interest in effect. It's not a surprise with their lack of care in these cases.

This was the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. Things didn't start to change until the late 80's or early 90's. Prostitutes were known to move around and leave town suddenly (sometimes to avoid another arrest) or just disappear. A lot of time no one was looking for them. A lot of serial killers (Dayton Rodgers, Gary Ridgeway, two examples) picked up prostitutes and got away with killing them because police weren't so apt to try too hard to find them when reported missing. Also, "street people" are less apt to go to the police and talk because they don't trust them. There is less of this now because some cops do actually care and DNA testing makes it much easier to catch these guys. Along with cameras being on every corner and in convenience stores in every large city.

Based on your uvenile remark I am guessing you do not and have never worked in law enforcement. I would say that you probably watch a lot of television where crimes like this are solved in 1-2 hours with several commercials in between. What the narrator said was his RECORD indicated nothing about being capable of homicide. My experience with sex shows offenders shows violent sex offenders are not always killers, violent or otherwise. . Violent sex is different than violence leading to murder. The logic makes sense if you are a detective looking for proof and not a back seat driver trying to second guess the experienced professionals. So I guess the answer to your question is logic way above your pay grade and life experiences.

That's because Alaska abolished life without parole, so 99 years is the next best thing they have at their disposal.

Hansen started his prison sentence in '84 in Pennsylvania and was transferred to Spring Creek Correctional Center in '86, where he remained until May 2014. He was again transferred to Anchorage Correctional Complex and placed in medical segregation. Robert Hansen died of natural causes at 0130, 21 AUG 14, at the age of 75.
I don't like to put my personal opinion in but this was obviously a gross negligence of the judicial system to fail to put away a serial kidnapper/rapist before he killed so many folk. A darn shame.

And then the only one he is going to reveal that side of himself (herself) to is the victim, just before he (or she) kills her. And they are not maniacs!! They are cold-blooded human beings who make a conscious decision to kill - because they enjoy it. Giving these killers silly titles is only helping to feed the misconception of what killers really are. Human beings who can choose to fit in and look normal to cover up what they really like to do. The cops can take a leap of faith that because someone doesn’t look or act like a killer, he can’t be one. Wrong!

It was part of his deal to confess and show where he buried them that his case did not receive publicity and his family left alone. That is the reason you don't hear about his serial killer. The police agreed to his conditions.

It's amazing to me how the FBI profile of Hansen almost exactly fits the description of Australia's forest serial killer Ivan Milat. From the early cruelty to animals, keeping trophies, social misfit, the escape of a potential victim to inform police.
Even more amazing is the number of times the offender is right under the cops noses. If it wasn't for the one cop who wouldn't give up he'd still be out there. The one cop, state troopers and FBI all involved deserve a medal.

That's probably why profiling works, because monsters such as this tend to think similarly and act similarly, given similar upbringings and histories.
My dad was in the FBI in the '50s. He was a pretty smart guy and the FBI is a pretty smart organization. Their forensics are taught all over the world. With all the ways to track somebody nowadays, like smart phones and credit cards and computers and the internet, it's amazing that criminals get away with what they do.
I admire people who do these jobs as it must take it's tole mentally.

They did follow up though... they searched the guy's house and didn't find any evidence. And he had friends who gave him a false alibi. It wasn't even he said/she said, it was her word against multiple other people. There was just nothing they could do on that evidence. And nothing they ever could have done, if the murder investigation hadn't also led to him.
Unbelievable that once he was in Alaska he was doing all these violent crimes, even pleading no contest, but was still out there, knocking around, looking for victims.

It should not have been on one officer to investigate a case. What a legend. I’m glad that the state troopers also went to the FBI. I’ve seen so many cases where smaller police forces won’t admit they need help and lose so much time that could be spent solving the case and catching the perpetrator.
She escaped, week later , police went to his house and searched his car looking for evidence, they found nothing. How is that i am not surprised at all a serial killer would not left any evidence that can tied him to the escaped woman from his house and car??

Profiling is based isolating and matching facts (not analysis or interpretation) of the case and victims matched to statistically significant known attributes of convicted perpetrators. These days it’s booked into a set of machine learning algorithms, which is just a faster more efficient processor of what the pioneers were doing.
So really the opposite of psychic conclusions unless I suppose you don’t even believe in the normal distribution curve either.
Read any of John Douglas books on serial killers, profile and one book called Evil that men do it’s really good.
These series are still the Greatest docu-series of All time.

Refusal of lie detectors is not implication of GUILT.
Cindy had every right to deny a lie detector. After everything she had been through, and how emotionally, mentally, and physically unstable she likely was, that woman knew for a fact the lie detector would have come up poorly.
Any cop who thought negatively of her for refusing such after all that trauma deserves to feel shame for what they did.

Serial killers are so nuts. The Golden State killer was my customer before getting caught and he was the meanest, rudest, most terrifying a$$hole I ever came face to face with. He used to stand there in the aisle and start screaming for help instead of going to find help. He got mad at me once and thought I was about to die, judging by the look in his eyes.

Weird, because I asked my brother who lives in Kenei, Alaska if he’d ever met him. My brother said of course! It’s a small town where everybody knows everybody! Turns out that my brother and he shared the same airplane mechanic, and the mechanic was really traumatized by the fact that he’d facilitated the killer’s murders.
I can't understand how someone be able to sleep comfortable and moves on with his life knowing that he literally takes someone live.
my Dads a clinical psychopath, and I learned 1st hand how they think growing up with him. Most psychopaths are not the hollywood example, but some are, and most that are self taught or learn. they don't think like regular people. the estimates are 1 in every 100 is a psychopath (hard wired for no empathy), 4 in every 100 are sociopaths, (empathy, but limited and controlled, soft wired). its very difficult to tell the difference between the two, even with professionals. Psychopaths operate completely differently from other humans, and they tick the box of about 6 major traits, and a selection of about 30 others. Everything to them, is either flight or fight, they remain in a predator mode their whole lives, there is no "cure" for them.
the world has a Psychopath problem, and a case like this is considered "lone wolf" style, this is the view they want the public to have. Unfortunately what most of the remaining 95% of the population don't realize, is that psychopaths are hired and voted into power because of their very nature, they are masterful liars/gas lighters, their appetites make them easily bribed, controlled (they are often managed by a "fixer") or blackmailed once placed in position (like a government job). Only lately is it coming to light as people are finding out about how these people are connected to the child trafficking rings. Psychopaths and pedophiles are often the same people, pan sexuality is often another common trait.
There has been several chapters written on this particular guy, in the FBI books, as well as many other "lone wolf" operators. there is also a suspicion that many of these predators know how to keep clean, or destroy evidence, some have even spent time in law enforcement, security services, etc so they know the ins and outs of an investigation. Its actually very difficult for people to find out actual missing numbers of people out side of a state/ policing zone, especially children, and especially in state parks. Authorities won't even speculate on how many serial killers are operating publicly. It also leads into missing people in even stranger circumstances, (take a look at the "missing 411 videos and books).
Sadly, we think someone who is killing 40-50 people as a "hobby" a serious serial killer, but we don't recognize the psychopath in government, the military, banking, etc who creates wars that kills thousands, simply to make a profit for the bank/ corporation. Education is the key to this, we are also seeing an understanding that there are many more Female psychopaths than previously thought, that they show/present differently. Prime example is Epstines partner in crime Ghislaine Maxwell. It also means it challenges the average persons core belief's, how does a woman (an attractive woman) get involved in trafficking all those girls? Aren't woman meant to be nurturers? etc. Well it turns out, psychopaths, sociopaths are commonly female as well, they simply present differently.
I would recommend everyone , spend about 20-50 hours investigating and learning about psychopaths, sociopaths, narcissists etc. Then start looking at the worlds political , banking and corporate leadership,. You are going to see something you will not like.

No mention of the female police officer who connected these crimes very early on and was dismissed by her superiors. She actually put together ten victims, catalogued all their jewellery by speaking to their relatives and when the time came SHE handed everything she had over to the state troopers. A senior investigator who was brought in was the first one to bring her in and she was able to positively identify a lot of the jewellery which was found in Hansen's attic as being the same as she had catalogued.
I was abducted many years ago. The abduction was witnessed by my mother and bystanders followed and stopped the car. My Calabrian father has never talked about it but the couple who tried to abduct me disappeared a few days later and have never been found.

it's confusing to you because you're ignorant of the actual laws. It's not just cut and dry.
The forfeiture of the right to bear arms is a federal law, upon which many states, claiming state's rights, reinstitute a felon's rights after several years. This is due to the unclear wording in the initial Federal Statutes, which states that the PURCHASE of firearms is actually what is being forfeited, not the POSSESSION. This was later altered in 68, but Alaska is one of the states which automatically reinstitutes firearms rights to felons regardless. Also, this case occured in the late 70s and early 80s, you couldn't just punch some letters into a phone and get records in a few seconds, if you believed someone was a felon from out of state and illegally possessing guns, you typically had to do the legwork of proving it by sifting through records.

Having lived in Alaska in 2005-2013, it was nice to see the cities I miss so much. My kids and I would move back in a hot second if we could.
In another video on this crime, they told that the killer had let Cindy see his house, described his trophies, let her see his face, and she realized that he was never gonna let her go in spite of him saying so, because she knew everything about him. That's why she decided not to trust his words and make a run for it when opportunity presented itself.

Unbelievable! If this is true to some degree then it portrays the police as being devoid of any emotion for the relatives of the aforesaid who most probably had heard about the arrest and wondered whether their loved ones constituted more prey of Hansen's.
By failing to uncover the final resting places of these other unfortunates then potentially they could still be in a cold case file needlessly.

I remember during a press conference I think it was Sheriff Nichols( Green River killer case) that got up set when people accused the cops of not trying to catch the killer and a reporter pushed the question in a manner that was basically saying you cops don’t care. Well the Sheriff said I have been trying to be respectful about the victims. The Sheriff stated I don’t care one bit what they do for a living no one deserves this they are someone’s child, sister, mother . Then the Sheriff said this is what we are up against we asked other women about how many men they talk to a night and they said could be around 50 or more. So what we did was split it to around 25 and go back 14 days. Now that’s a lot of potential suspects for just one victim and we were finding 1 to 4 bodies a week. The task was unbelievable.

yeah thats where i first read about this case (and all the others). My Dad is a psychopath, classic clinical one, but not all psychopaths become mass murders, mostly because they never figure it out, but many are theives, rapists, pedophiles, cheaters, liars, etc. One researcher calls them "low level psychopaths". Others have interactions with older psychopaths and you get this teaming up like the Sith out of Star wars. You then see cases like the british BBC star Jimmy Savile, who even had an episode of the more recent Sherlock Holmes series based on him and his habits, he has also been suspected as being involved in the murders of the Yorkshire ripper. These predators don't operate alone (but there is a push by the media to paint them all as lone wolves), they often are involved in rings (child sex trafficking) and you will find that all serial pedophiles that are locked up today, test very high on the the psychopath testing. (pedophiles are a type of psychopath in other words, a very important link) . Psychopaths are also masterful lairs/ gas lighters , and are often so good, they make excellent actors/directors etc in Hollywood. Then you find out about all these famous "stars" being fingered as being involved in child sex trafficking.
I have been looking into the subject for years to answer many of my own personal questions, as a result its uncovered a much bigger picture. Its even more concerning when you see the stats and numbers, how psychopaths are 1 in every 100 people, how sociopaths (soft wired to turn empathy off and on at will, rather than hard wired like a psychopath) are 4 in ever 100, that psychopaths and sociopaths can create other sociopaths (its the bases for the military and law enforcement) That there are many female psychopaths and sociopaths, but they present differently to the males (so main stream psychology focus on the males, and then claim its mostly men). Yet we have someone on trial right now Ghislaine Noelle Marion Maxwell, for her involvement in trafficking thousands of children over the years. This always challenges peoples beliefs, who see woman as nurturers, especially pretty white woman. Yet once you figure it all out, and you start looking around, you find Many psychopaths in plain sight, in positions of power, lying every day, abusing their position, in Government, Banking, corporations, law enforcement , and the military.- and even more sociopaths. A guy like this will hunt and kill for fun, but there are psychopaths out there starting wars that kill millions, all for fun, kicks and giggles, and some financial profit.
You really have to have tough intestines and an even tougher mind, to do the jobs of FBI profilers. These serial killers are truly perverse and sick in the brain. Hats off to these FBI profilers for taking these individuals down, I know i couldn't do their job for that kinda pay and I certainly wouldn't be able to sleep at night seeing all those dead bodies.
