  • DISCLAIMER: This video was my first one, and as you would expect, it has a number of issues. The legend is confusing, it lacks precision, the mapping itself and other stuff are also poorly made and there is quite a lot of mistakes/inaccuracies. All in all, not a video that I'm happy of today. I have decided to re-enable the comment section after a long time but just so you know, I won't read them personally(pro-tip, if you want to pick my interest, leave a well developed comment about some historical stuff, and especially that isn't about ideology in its theory/practice).
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    See the owned territories of Communist, Socialist, and Anarchist countries across the year from the Taiping Rebellion in 1851 to our current days, 2016.
    Assume that all dates given are on the 31st December. And that's why I didn't include 2017, because it's not yet finished.
    Note that if a Ephemeral nation didn't last until the actual end of the year, it's still shown as the territories they owned.

    I know in the description, they say this isn't about ideologies practice but here is some super base-level information:
    1) The soviet Union was socialist, specifically Marxist-Leninist. There can never be a communist state because that would be a contradiction (Ceaușescu might disagree though).
    2) Anarch-syndicalism is not the same as anarcho-communism. For some, the second may be the end goal but it isn't identical. It should still count as socialism.
    3) Venezuela is not socialist, they're just similar to parts of Europe in that they have robust welfare programs.

Portugal on the Abril Revolution was in similar route. So none of them are socialist, Venezuela might become sooner or later, but it isn't right now. Venezuela passed through a national-democratic revolution, just like Portugal. But Portugal abandoned the socialist step.

    • @robotube7361
      @robotube7361 Před 6 lety +28

      They are socialist allright. They have free healtcare, education and the state owns all the vital businesses by retaining 51% shares. This means one can be millionaire by owning the rest 49% shares which is why there are so many millionaires in China. Companies like Apple Foxconn and others deal with the Chinese government and not with private individuals.
      The people from West are so brainwashed and baffled how can a communist country be so successful - they cannot bring themselves believing that actually this model works.
      Socialism does work if left without interference from CIA and not being banned from international trade. This is what the Western capitalists try to hide by vilifying anything that has to do with Socialism.
      A socialist country can outperform any capitalist society in terms of production and this is why US keeps banning socialist countries from entering the Western market. They literally outright close the so called "free market" (the irony) put an embargo which is actually a proclamation of war on its own.

    How did you decide which was communist vs socialist? For instance the Soviet union refused to call itself communist because 'it hadn't achieved that yet... but was working on it' while in China their party is called communist but they don't act it very much. I also find it odd that North Korea changed to socialism in the video just because the Soviet union collapsed even though they were still using their unique version of Juche. It would have been interesting too if you included a 'controversial' colour for countries like Germany in WW2 where many argue whether they were socialist or not. Good video don't take this offensively.

    • @FormosaHistory
      @FormosaHistory  Před 6 lety +1

      Thanks, and yeah, my legend is a bit incorrect at certain point. I called "communist" countries that were actually "Marxist-Leninist"(countries which have the goal to achieve communism).
      And I called socialist the Taiping Rebellion which was not socialist, nor communist, but has some communist ideas.
      National Socialism is very debatable to be consedered socialist, so anything like fascism in Italy or nazism in Germany was excluded from the video. Maybe adding a different colour would have been a good idea.

    • @xbox_cheeto5338
      @xbox_cheeto5338 Před 6 lety

      Thanks for the quick and civil reply, I didn't intend to be rude and hoped you would not take offense to my constructive criticism. I can somewhat empathize with why you confused communism and socialism here as I too was making a video (now cancelled) about the political ideologies in the America's and was stumped about whether to put communism in as it was going to be hard to identify. Perhaps switching 'traditional Marxism' with communism and other types of socialism with the socialist tag would have worked. Maybe a third colour too for 'controversial, disputed or self declared for the Taiping or Nazis as we both agree they are very controversial here, especially the Nazis. or maybe just 'somewhat left wing' as its tag lol even though most would say Nazis were either 'third positionist' or right wing. To me 'third positionist' just means a mix of left and right wing elements but more extreme than centrists for example. They are sorta like the communists to the social democrats or the fascists to the conservatives (as Nazis are usually agreed to be more left wing than fascism, however even that is debatable as fascism is also considered third positionist, perhaps reactionary is a better term for extreme conservativism's version but now I am not totally sure). Great reply!

    • @buuzzsawtouchedme194
      @buuzzsawtouchedme194 Před 6 lety +6

      +JJ's Kaleidoscope,
      Well maybe the issue then, is that you've never lived in a Capitalist country (see how I've just spun it), because if you did (plenty to choose from) you will realise how much of a Communist country China actually is.
      In China, if the Government decided that CZcams wasn't good enough for the people, or couldn't find a way to profit from it etc, then it would be gone tomorrow, where I live that would never happen, as I live in a Democracy.
      P.S. An before you say that Communism is about Democracy, it isn't, if you have to force people to think/live a certain way, and punish/censor them if they are different, then that is totalitarianism, which is what (whether you like it or not) Communism is about.

      Anton
      ,
      "sounds like you have no idea what communism actually is"
      An that's why people like you are dangerous, because whenever Communism fails, that's what all Commies say, how'd you like if I went round blaming all the flaws of Capitalism on it not being real Capitalism.
      Right now, I'm going to agree with you (I don't really, but to get an argument across I will), let's say that these countries that all failed weren't really Communist ones, based on the chance of probably (an based on history), is it really a good idea going round to campaign for communism?
      As I'm going to assume that you believe the people in charge were calling themselves Communists to gain power/money etc, well in that case, if that is what happens every single time, then based on the chance of probability, it wont work, an to still believe it will is idiotic.
      It's like me leaving my kids alone with a Adult Male Stranger, yes most Adult Male Strangers aren't pedophiles, but based on the chance of probability, it's not really a good idea, don't take this the wrong way but I would never let you take care of my kids as you might be a pedophile (an that's based on the chance of probability).
      Where if you look at Capitalism (whether it's real or not, next you'll be telling me the earth isn't round) it seems to work everytime, every single country (an you can look this up) that has gone from a shithole to western, has got their based on Capitalism and Nationalism (an for the record, 99% of Black in Africa respect Nationalism more than us filthy White Racist's do).
      "totalitarniansm"
      You do realise that in order for Communism to work, you need big government right? The more Government means more chance of totalitarianism.
      An alternatively anarchism (which I'm guessing you also support) wont work under Communism, as again Communism is about big Government, Capitalism is about as little Government control as possible.

    Interesting, but I think you have some very important omissions: Mexico was under a socialist regime in Lazaro Cárdenas times (1934-1940). Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia are building a socialism for the XXI century.

    Why isn't Burkina Faso under Sankara on the list ? And also, although I agree with some other comments that those states where never communist, precisely because they were states, they were at least led by communist leaders, at least for some . But what puzzles me is why you would depict post-Mao China as communist yet the DPRK is socialist . It may be because of the condition that they only need to claim they are communist to become it on this map, which would make sense given that North Koreans rarely describe themselves as communists .

    You were a bit late with Cuba, Castro aligned himself with USSR in the early 60's - that's what the Cuban Missle Crisis was all about.

    There are some pretty successful Communist communities in non-Communist countries.
    Maybe you can add some purple spots there.
    Kibbutz in Israel. Wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kibbutz
    Yamagishi movement in Japan. Wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamagishi_movement
    And Twin Oaks Community in Virginia, they are not exactly communist but "income sharing". Wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin_Oaks_Community,_Virginia

      And by the way, since you put Taiping Heavenly Kingdom(1851-1872 in China) in this video, that means the Communism doesn't have to follow Karl Marx's theory. So the first socialist country could be Xin dynasty (9-23 AD in China) . Anyway it is a little tricky, if Marxism is not necessary for Communism, could all the prehistoric primitive tribes' collectivism be considered as communism?
      By the way again, without considering ideology. The International song and Russian anthem are melodious💖
