Please excuse the few brief interruptions in the video that took place when the camera had issue with overheating or needed adjustments.
Special thanks goes out to the friendly operator and security guard on board.

at 5:10 the BSC crosses the light rail tracks. Then stops at the 3rd and Ash stop. You see the pan up sign in the window. At this point, the car goes back on overhead catenary. You can tell when the car is running on the batteries when the green light right above the operators hand is lit. It does 1.3 miles on battery and 1.7 miles on catenary per trip.

Ooooh that's really fun to watch! And also a bit scary from a direct POV good job to the driver!

If you ever end up operating the main light rail line again, let me know. I'd love to shoot a high quality video on that too. I did manage to shoot videos on that line but just to not bother the operator I had my camera set up to the side instead of behind the operator. Also my video on the east bound trip on the main line got cut short at Sycamore because there was a police chase in Mesa that ended up blocking the tracks. I'd like to re-shoot that video someday.

@@Shuotography I can definitely let you know when I'm on the mainline again!

@@DeadGuyOnTheBus since you’re the operator, I have a couple of operational questions for you that I thought of while watching the video.
First, what are you pointing at all the time? Is it required that you point at certain things along the line to verify that you’ve seen and understood them correctly? I know the railroads in Japan make their staff do this quite a bit, so might they have replicated that here?
Also, are you required to stop at every station, even if there’s no passengers that want to get on or off the train? This constant stopping/starting really slows down the service and seems very inefficient to me. I assume this is a requirement?
Looks like you have a really fun job though. I’d love to try out that job for a week or so one day.

@@OliversElevators I would gladly answer any questions!
First answer, yes. We've employed the same hunting and pointing method that was developed and is in use in Japan :) We use it to identify potential hazards, and maintain focus and alertness.
Second answer, it was originally planned that we would skip certain stops unless there were passengers there, but due to operational features of the alignment, it was scrapped. This is because the alignment has areas without trolley wire, so we have to stop at certain stops to lower and stow our Pantograph, then raise at other stops. If the pantograph isn't lowered and slips off the wire, the sheer pins will snap and the pantograph will become unoperationable until maintenance is done on it. To avoid operator confusion and error, the operator is required to stop and dwell at every platform, and verifying pantograph status at platforms where the pantograph is raised or lowered

Every time I commute using either the Tempe Streetcar or Light Rail, I always wonder what it would be like to operate these. As another comment said, it sure seems like a fun job, well, minus the fact that there can be sketchy people, but I sure would still like to have it.
Also, did you film a northbound POV trip to Marina Heights/Rio Salado Parkway as well as a southbound Valley Metro Rail POV trip to Gilbert Road/Main Street?

Are you planning on doing a cab ride on the Valley Metro light rail in Phoenix as well?

I've actually already shot that video. I just have to edit it and put it up.

  • @DeadGuyOnTheBus

Will the northbound trip be on a separate video or did the footage not come through well enough?

    • @Shuotography
      @Shuotography  Před rokem +3

The footage for the northbound trip is perfectly usable and will be posted later. Technically the footage of all 4 trips are usable. With the 2 later trips that took place after sunset being more complete since I had resolved the issue with the overheating shut downs by then. I will probably post videos of all 4 trips eventually. I like a little variety in my content lineup, so I was gonna post a POV video shot on board the cab car of the CalTrain next. That one should be fun to watch since that train does go pretty fast for something with a passenger accessible front window. After that my plan was to post a POV video shot on the main light rail line.
