When Cannondale sent us the invite to the launch of this bike (plus another that you’ll see in the coming weeks), we had to speculate as to exactly what we’d be testing. We had the clue that it was going to be an eBike, so our instant assumption was that it was going to be in the now well-established SL eMTB category. Though many companies are now offering a bike to fit into this category, it seems as if none of them are in agreement as to exactly what a lightweight electric mountain bike should be. In the case of the Cannondale Moterra SL, the answer to that question takes the form of a Shimano EP801 drive unit with a custom 601Wh battery and a smartly designed frame to minimize weight without sacrificing capability. Read on to learn all about Cannondale’s new and exciting entry to the eBike world, and find out how it performed in the initial couple of rides.

#emtb #ebike #mountainbike #mountainbiking - Sport
This is a good start to what people want! Full power and lighter weight!
As a heavy rider at 95kgs and an current SL owner, i can see how this would land right in my sweet spot, light enough to use locally, carry over gates and fences, and powerful enough to ride with full power bikes on a big day out, looks sweet too!
It strikes a nice sweet spot for sure!
Not just the future of emtb but also the future of mountain biking for social riders for sure full power at a relatively lightweight package great bike Cannondale 👏👏
It's a very interesting offering for sure.
43 lbs is about 19.5 kg for everyone that doesn’t live in the USA.
I kind of wrote off cannondale as a brand, but damn, this looks like a home run! Full power at this weight, is impressive and is encouraging about the tech and future of ebikes.
It’s cool to see them pushing back again!!
Most compelling lightweight E-bike on the market. Kudos, Cannondale.
Good looking bike! Makes me want to consider a Cannondale!
That it does!
Well needed update
It's a totally new model - Moterra LT is still in the lineup for now.
Got one at our shop for a demo. Current Levo alloy owner. After 3 short rides, it’s winning me over. I like most everything about my Levo better than the moterra from the lack of cables to the charging door to the chainguide (moterra doesn’t come with one), to the app. ( specialized app is lighting fast, super easy to navigate, E tube is clunky, slow, complicated)…. But the ride of the Moterra SL is undeniable. It’s not just lighter, it’s poppier, more playful, but still stable and confident. the motor is amazing, trail mode 3 is so intuitive I didn’t feel the need for turbo. Oh, and a medium fits me perfectly. I’m impressed and I didn’t want to be. I’m on my 3rd e-bike now, this may be my 4th
How tall are you?
Interested to know also. I’m 180cm and I have a Habit3 in Large and considering this
i like where things are heading
Nice looking bike. It looks balanced in esthetic, a mix of the normal huge downtube, and the rest thin lines.
I definitely like the really slack option for the headtube angle.
A looker for sure.
Yeah ! A new era begins. Below 20kg and full power.
Steepens to 63.7 with a simple flip of the headset.
Cannondale was a force back in the day, innovation, very well built bikes, and good looking too. Let's see if they can bring it back
Getting back to the top of the game is their aim now. This seems like a great bike to help drive it from what we can tell so far.
What happened to Cannondale anyway? I remember in the 90s they were among the best and most sought after brands. I took a 20 year hiatus from MTB and they've obviously fallen quite far, but nice to see they're still in the game and I'm rooting for them!
But yeah, how'd they fall off so far?
The MX400 motorcycle arguably brought them down. From the web: “ Cannondale reported a loss of $46,600,000 on the motorcycle and ATV division, after reporting 11 straight quarterly losses. In the year before filing for Chapter 11, Cannondale’s share price on the Nasdaq had fallen 83 percent. In the end, the motorcycle losses brought down the whole company. Although Cannondale bicycles survived, it was taken over by completely different owners. Cannondale’s motorcycle foray cost the company paper wealth that totaled at least $80,000,000.”
My son's 2020 habit is aging well we had one gripe with the BB shell face not being "clean" but I faced both sides and it's now numero uno, weird that they assembled it dirty from the factory and weirdest the bike shop didn't see It, anyway we got a great deal on it second hand...
@@pennhiker5117 I used to be a fan I raced xc on a Cannondale f700 they were most desirable and on top of their game engineering wise until they sank everything up into the dirtbike project.
There's a lot to like here. Its very interesting how things seem to converging on a full power 40ish lb ebike.
We’re stoked to see this progression for sure.
Just wait until solid state batteries make their way into the market... It'll be wild
Only a matter of time, Stromed had teased a Solid State battery for their city bikes last year, not sure if they've implemented it or not though.
Beautiful bike
Definitely a looker.
Wow! Nice… 👍
10 lbs less than my full power e-mtb with similar battery (625Wh).
I guess Carbon vs alu, FlexPivot maybe 1-2 lbs, Fox36 vs 38, non removable battery (I guess)…
Light weight enduro, I like it! 🤔
It’s impressive for sure!
Cheers
I've owned 5 Cannodale's over the years, a true loyalist until last year when I went with the Fezzari Timp Peak. The Moterra last year was not doing it for me...they missed me by a year!
Timp Peak is a killer rig too!
A wonderful motorcycle for any man with a manicure!
😂
That bike looks phenomenal.
Extender?
Don’t believe one will be available.
Can the bike compete with a Bosch motor at full power on technical climbs ? Can it compete with a Lapierre GLP3 in E-EWS competition?
Great looking bike...
It sure is. Rides pretty damn good too.
Is the battery removable?@@TheLoamWolf
Yes, but the motor has to be removed first.
The good news is that it has a full size motor and battery. Should be cheaper than if it had a smaller motor and battery. Not quite sure how that works but it seems to be the industry trend.
$8,750 for the build tested - seems pretty good value, comparatively.
Cool bike, needs range extender (battery) capability though for sure. I tested a medium and really liked it, though it was a tad small for me at 6,1. On steep technical climbs it likes to wheelie a bit as well. Super stable on straight descents.
Starts at $7000, up to $14000 USD, 62.5 headangle can be adjusted to 63.7, FLEXING carbon chainstay (sounds fragile lol), flip chip to make it a full 29er.
If there’s one thing Robert knows how to do, it’s break stuff! If it held up under him so far, then it can’t be thaaaat fragile. Haha but, we have one en-route and will do our best to test its durability in our long term review.
That handlebar display unit kills it for me.
Thanks for sharing.
You can take it off and ride without . .
Me thinking "I might have some nature spots like that to explore here where I live" and it turns out he's actually making the video from where I live 😂 amazing. Do you spend a lot of time here in Braga, Portugal?
Are the Mtb tracks in Portugal great?
@@fernandom6811I have no idea. I think there might be some Facebook groups something like "trilhos bicicleta Braga" and stuff. And there's the ones in this video. I don't even have a bike at this point. Do you live in Braga?
@@samuelteixeira7332 ok thanks 😊
This was my first time around Braga, and I loved the trails!
@@TheLoamWolf I really need to explore. I have no bike yet. That's why I was here ahah. But this is not what I'm looking for
Great review. I have a turbo levo pro and a Santa Cruz Heckler SL. Would you consider the Moterra as a replacement to these two bikes? One bike to rule them all?
I don't think I could get rid of my heckler sl. I built it up pretty much as far and best as you can.
We'll try address this in our longer term testing, but first impressions say it could do the dual duty for sure.
@@TheLoamWolfAppreciate the reply. I’m a week away from getting the Moterra SL 1 delivered. I’m a heavier rider. Would you slap a Zeb or a 38 on this? 210 geared up ride black desert terrain…
I have had 3 rides on this. 60 or so miles with 4.5 thousand feet of elevation. This bike feels like a Stump Jumper Evo with a motor. Didn't really notice how slack it was. The biggest thing I noticed is that when the motor shuts off at 20 mph that you can still peddle this bike and gain speed in the flat and down hill sections without feeling like a pig in the mud. Compared to my Turbo Levo, I would say the the Levo will have more power in climbs but can't hang with this bike in the flats or downhill. I would shorten the cranks on this from 165 to 160 as I had a few strikes in areas that I normally wouldn't. I also noticed that because of the weight of this bike on the trail, it's not as heavy as a levo or a 50 plus pound bike is you'll take a little more of a beating because it's not as "damp" as a heavier bike would be. My personal opinion is if you're looking to race this ebike xc races climbing power and output is where this bike may not shine. But downhill and flats is where you could possibly make up ground. This bike is extremely fast and peddles well. Can handle drops and jumps, I wouldn't worry about the flex stays.
@@_Jake.From.Statefarm_ This bike makes a compelling argument.
14,000 US dollars! Amazing!
get a car for that
They have cheaper builds available
@@MARK02118 Even the lowest build is 7 grand. Still can get a nice used car for that.
@@TheLoamWolf sounsd good bikes are getting to expensive i can buy a second car for less than that
14k ? Wow this is crazy crazy and makes me have a love hate feeling for the bike companies that price their bikes at such high prices and make it harder for people like me the average person to get one to enjoy the ride of an emtb
The price difference between the LAb71 and SL 1 models, comes mostly from the custom paint job on the Lab71 and a few carbon bits here and there. The SL 1 model is priced much better at $8,750 (and only half a pound heavier), and we would say more "affordable" than the competition with a similar build spec.
Good looking bike, head angle and flex stays are a bit off putting. Definitely think other brands will be taking note on how to lighten their full power offerings.
Flex stays shouldn't be an issue, and the headset can be flipped to steepen the headset to 63.7 which is more manageable for most.
I have a 2023 Neo 3 and love it. Well made, great handling and the right balance of power and range. This looks like a great niche bike but the price, 😮
$8,750 for the build tested doesn't feel too bad.
I love this bike! Not sure about that head angle though...
Yeah we're with ya there... It has some pros, but we think toning it back to 63.5 may be in our future.
@@TheLoamWolf awesome. Looks like a standard headset, so should be easy to do. What is the best angle adjusting headset to use?
I think it comes with flip chip headset
seems like a really nice concept, however not for short-legged people. Reach is way too short in comparison to the seat tube lenght
YT tried the small battery big power approach and it sucked. 15 miles and the battery is dead
The battery on this is larger than YT's offerings by a little. Maybe this won't be the bike to replace full-power eBikes for riders looking for huge rides in full power modes, but it felt to do pretty well.
Have you heard if a Range Extender would be made available?
There is no mention of a range extender in any of their media, but I just reached out to Cannondale and will update when we get a reply.
@@TheLoamWolf Thanks, Currently on a Rise H that I run with as many as 2 extenders. I'm looking to get something new and geo/specs look great on this Bike if a range extender becomes available.
@TheLoanWolf did you get a reply on this?
@@TheLoamWolfdid you receive a reply on this?
@@stephen.dunlop I got a reply from Cannondale and they said NO plans for it...
whre is the shimano auto shift😯
Rumors that builds will be coming in the future..
Im not sure that flexy stays were the right move on such a big bike... hopefully there arent any structural issues down the line just because they wanted to save a bit of weight
We’re certain they’ve done the math and they’ll be plenty strong!
They've been around a while and Cannondale will have done the maths.
+1.5 or 2 degree angle set to increase the reach and have more reasonable hta
Comes with a ±0.6 degree angleset as standard, taking it from 62.5 to 63.7.
Isn't 62.5 + 0.6 only 63.1?
The headtube angle tho, you ain’t riding with no hands 😂
😂
My favorite thing about 'natural' MTBers is that they really want to break into the E-MTB arena, even though they pretend they don't. 😅
We weighed my lab71 unit weighs in at 46 lbs. not the 43 lbs. I’m tired of all the manufacturers lying .
So it came in at 21 kilos not the definition of under the definition of SL .
This flex pivot is such a dumb idea especially on a long travel bike that is supposed to take hard beating, only Canon dale could come up with it... Where's lefty?
62.5 HA slacker than a lot of full on DH bikes...
Yeah, it's pretty crazy.
Bikes are getting slacker these days.
Want, 14lbs lighter than what I have! 🏆
Yeah that’s gonna be just a liiiiiitle bit noticeable on the trail. 😂
Imagine that, and E bike that can climb well... 🤣🤣. I still can't see the bike industry's fascination with all thing electric. Of course if the New Jersey legislature gets their way, you'll need a license and registration to operate one in that state.
We like eBikes and mountain bikes equally. Both have their pros and cons, and both are super fun.
@@TheLoamWolf Indeed biking as a whole is meant to be a fun activity. It just appears that manufacturers are focusing more and more on E bikes first. For instance, don't you think the flex stay design idea used on the Moterra would be a much more interesting on the Scalpel?
Maybe it's just the bike snob in me, but I can't stand when a bike has a shimano motor and sram drivetrain. 😅
We kinda get it, but they can be friends some times.
it sucks they put a Shimano motor in it!!!
It isn't so bad.
@@TheLoamWolfthats a political correct way to confirm it!! 😂😂😂👍
I dont view ebikers as people that need upgraded fox parts.
Unless it says “Handmade in USA” it’s a Cannondale in name only.
Could be a good bike but I'm just not feeling the looks/colors they chose. Manufacturers really shoot themselves in the foot by using non appealing colors. Even the cannondale font just looks bad to me. If someone is dropping 6k plus on a bike then it better look sweet.
Plus, going with the shimano motor makes it an automatic no.
Thanks for sharing.
Hmm, nice but it's a Cannonale...they just aren't the same company they were 25 years ago
They're trying to climb back up to the top ranks. This feels like a very good push.
$14,000 is simply ridiculous for any bike! That's exactly why the Mountain Bike market is in such bad shape currently......GREED!!!!!
FR
Is it Cannonbroke or Brokendale?
You lost me at EP801
Can you tell us what about Shimano's drive unit is a deal breaker for you?
First Start. Motor sucks, would great to see a beefy damper (Vivid or X2) as well, and I am not sure if this carbon horst link will last over a longer time period. But in general a very nice bike. But as all bikes: Way to expensive!!!! Dear manufacturers: When a bike is the same price as a normal petrol powerd motorbike, then something is not righ. Just saying.
I am not digging that flex stays.
Understandable, but they seem to work just fine and we're sure Cannondale will have done their testing.
@@TheLoamWolf At first I did not dig the flex stays design, but after some research, I can see that it is actually clever and actually functions as a linkage. I ended up buying this very model for my son!
Way to much money for most people.
It's still 14 pounds heavier than my large full sus trailbike with plenty enough travel, not wanting to freely bash but that's always the same, okay it's full power but SL it ain't 😂
SL compared to full power ebikes that are 14lbs heavier than it!
Lost me on too long chainstay and too slack headtube.
Chainstay length is understandable but didn't feel crazy. Head tube angle can be adjusted to 63.7 by rotating the headset cups.
Why is weight such a big deal these days. Its not difficult.. Battery and motor weighs 5.5kg so just add that to your current bike, and no one runs exo tires. Brakes will be shit and 36s flex a ridic amount on an ebike. Lightweight just means breakable. My KSL is 21kg and it can handle 10 runs of fort bill without skipping a beat because its bomb proof.
I had a Moustache bike with a flex in the chainstay and it was very worrying. Felt like it would snap every time I ripped a berm
I agree, its really 48-50 lbs with a real build. My KSL is 41 lbs built and plenty of power to tackle almost any climb.
I want SL bikes to get down to 37lbs with real builds. I am not sure that's possible with current tech.
Because 40 pound e-bikes, like mine, literally feel like trail bikes when descending at fast speeds.
@@Canyon_Shawn My KSL feels like my Enduro on the downs, Its a little heavier in the air.
@@marksedman2267 I forgot about getting air. I only get a little air once in a while. My riding style is stay on the ground and carry as much speed as possible, everywhere I go. How much does yours weigh?
@@marksedman2267 Yeah tech isn't there yet but I feel the day is coming that we get a true sub 40lb bike with 85 plus nm and a battery around 650wh. I'm sure battery tech could improve and weight could be dropped a little there and maybe some new motor designs shave off a pound or so. I'm not sure where the rest would come from though.
150 mm flex stay bike? No thank you.
Cannondale's engineers have done their testing, it shouldn't be an issue.
Headset routing, can't slam seatpost HARD PASS!
Optional headset routing
Remember when downhill bikes had 80mm rear travel and 71 degree head angles? Pepper ridge Farm remembers.
@@michaelmicallef668 Pepperidge Farm closed shop and moved in a basement office down Campbell soup HQ.
They paid for it 😂
Don’t need to slam the post to shred…
What a blasphemy
