  • When I first launched Sim Racing Paddock in 2015, I had a plan for a series, "State of the Sim". I launched that off with rFactor 2, and I laid out where I saw it going, and what it needed to do to improve.
    Now here we are, six years later, and it's time to revive the series? Why not reboot it with the Sim that started it off, rFactor 2!

    I originally intended for this video to be released last year, but 2 moves, setting up a new studio, and life getting in the way led to me postponing this video a year. I'll admit, it's a relief to release this, as this video was a bit of a passion project for me, so yeah! Hope you enjoy!

    rF2 is such a schizophrenic sim, I don't think I've ever had such a love/hate relationship with a piece of software. Whenever I boot it up, it either gives me the most mindblowingly magical sim racing experience imaginable, or the most frustrating fight against technical malfunctions I've ever experienced, and seemingly never anything between those two opposite poles.

Sometimes I have fun with it, but as of recent times I've been playing ACC a lot and it's simply just better

      The only think that make me come to rf2, is the feel of driving, and the FFB, if the FFB in AM2 had the same feel, I think i had forget rf2 already, unfortunately i really dislike the am2 ffb, but i have hope that they will fix that. After all they have created a new sim, will the rf2 developers created a shit new UI. Note, only race in VR.

    This is such a nostalgia bomb. I used to write for Race Sim Central, and coordinated a mod team for F1 Challenge. The fact that ISI managed to include headlight and e-brake support in an F1 game that EA was paying for was pretty damn impressive.

    • @VarieF1Hero
      @VarieF1Hero Před 3 lety

      Even today the F1C community is still alive. Some people who were modders from F1C are working for some of the big sim racing companies. There is one modder from Wookeys forum who was object of interest to ISI.
      Wookey's forum. F1 Challenge VB. Constrictor Modding Team. F1 Challenge's post in RaceDepartment. Some really unique stuff are there.
      The ethics that were in RaceSimCentral when modding still exists in these communities. The F1C 2020 mod was used in a cyber by people from Elazig who suffered an earthquake, having that mod the first Hanoi and Zandvoort 2020 config tracks ever. It helped a little to many young people to get over the tragedy.
      As a big rFactor2 fan, long live to ISIMotor!!!

    Will, I'm feeling very optimistic about rF2's future after watching your video. About 3 years ago you released a video with suggestions on what rF2 needs to improve. You mentioned a better roster of licensed cars, tracks, and graphical improvements, all of which appeared in the game verbatim; the very tracks you mentioned became the latest DLC. I can only conclude, thus, that your suggestions in this video will become the next landmark improvements in rF2! I do think you hit the nail on the head once again on all facets. Of particular note, I'm sure Marcel & company are arriving at a crossroads point where they need to decide how much more the ISI engine can be reworked, or if it's time to write, or implement a new/another engine. The costs, challenges, and processes of this are well beyond my expertise! I do hope that S397's time and investment is financially viable enough to lay the groundwork for an rF3, and not an eventual death of the sim altogether.

    • @krzysztofmajda2386
      @krzysztofmajda2386 Před 3 lety +1

      There will never be a rewrite of ISI engine. They can't even keep up with bugfixing existing code. UI rewrite took almost 4 years with suboptimal results. And rF3 is very unlikely.

    Great video, William. I’d rate one of your best, if not the best, content I’ve seen on the channel. And I do hope it resonates with the community, but especially the developers. RF2 has always been a favorite of mine, but I’ve always felt it needed more love and care of true race fans/devs. The Modding community can do a lot to prop up beloved titles, but there are many core issues in RF2 that need addressed at the dev level. Hope this gets in their ear, and helps to motivate some of the changes you’ve highlighted. And again, great job. Thanks for your voice and content.

    When I was new to racing sims I was trying really hard to force myself to like rf2: everybody especially the sim veterans are saying it is great, so it must be my fault that I don't enjoy it. The turning point for me was the release of the Flat6 mod. At first everybody was praising how great the mod was and how this one mod would bring life to rf2, and then it was revealed that the mod is heavily flawed and unrealistic. Then I realized that a large majority of people don't really know what they are talking about when it comes to simulator physics. So I moved on to AC and iRacing which I enjoyed and could find a lot more people to race with online. Now I only check rf2 for like twice a year.

    • @6665hitm4k3r
      @6665hitm4k3r Před 3 lety

      @@f1game912 Could very well be that some cars are unrealistic, but this is something you will find in any sim or racing game. I have to say, it's still my favorite racing sim despite the fact that I spend quite a bit of time with other products especialy AC and everytime I come back from AC there is something about rF2 that makes me enjoy myself. Most of it is down to the fact that the car feels very connected and once everything melts together, it becomes a nice experience. And then there are all the little details that I miss in other titles. At the end of the day it's the last modded racing sim with that amount of depth and complexity that is in development and it's one of the main reasons why we are still talking about an allmost 10 year old product in 2021. And if it was such a POS why are we still using it?
      You don't have to understand it, but there is something called taste. I am annoyed by stuff like auto pitlanes with no collision, no mod support, mediocre rule systems and cars that have a very unconnectd boxy feel to it. And for the hundred things that are very bad in rF2, there are easily hundred things that it offers that you won't find anywhere else. It's just too bad that the quality of a product is mainly measured by it's visual quality, the sound and ease of use. Stuff like flexibilty or depth of gameplay is very far down the line and it shows with the development in the whole gaming industry and this review aswell.

    Rfactor is really a great simulation. But ... and that's a big but ... It's as messy as a kid's Lego box.
    If you only have little time you are more concerned with putting together a decent race than being able to drive yourself.
    It starts with the clutter in the Steam library and ends with the steering wheel setting .....
    Until you have found a decent configuration, the weekend is over again ...
    There are also loading times that are record-breaking. Even with SDD and a fast CPU. The whole thing can be a test of nerves.

I have invested more than 2000 hours and I’m doing phenomenal track time at my favourite track Sonoma .95. Yes there are trade-offs but in my opinion you can’t beat the physics offered. And the eye candy is getting better and better as long as the track file has more than 350 MB roughly. Sebring and Silverstone are my go to choices after Sonoma .95.The GT three series as well as anything ASR personally can’t beat it

    I recently jumped back into rF2. I’ve only been sim racing on PC since 2018, and I only played rF2 a short time on a single monitor before I bought an Oculus Rift S. I had trouble with video stuttering until I found out that I could run the game using Open Composite, and bypass Steam VR, which seemed to be the culprit of the issues I was having playing in VR. I enjoyed playing this title in VR with the combination of the physics and FFB feeling. I was playing this sim as a single player experience when I wanted a break the competitiveness of iRacing. Since the recent updates, it appears that trying to run the game with Open Composite is no longer an option. Hopefully this can be remedied in the future for Oculus users, to be able to bypass steam and run natively in Oculus VR. I know that the game would work fine if I played on a monitor, but it’s hard for me to back, now that raced in VR as my primary method.

Two months ago, I saw the dry line on the wet track and that was very impressive. And also, Le Mans Virtual returned! I say more event organizers should try RF2, and while the price point for DLCs is making it tough for some, it is for the most part, worth it for the leagues for the experience alone.

    rFactor 2 is the sim I want to like, but just can't get there. I bought it when it was beta/early access, ignored it for a while due to the issues you mentioned (lack of decent content, lack of online play etc), then started casually following its progress after the S397 transition; I even repurchased it since I missed the window for transferring my account. I've been enjoying watching the progress, but it's still such a clunky game to set up that I haven't even bothered installing it on the new PC I built back in October. I'd rather be spending that time driving in iRacing or Assetto Corsa. The potential seems to be there, but I'm not sure it's ever going to be properly realized. It can have the best driving physics in the business, but that doesn't matter when the barrier of entry is so high and the actual payoff is so low (in regards to decent competitive online play, which they're at least starting to address in baby steps). Time will tell.

      So, I felt it's better for the Sim Racing community if I pulled the video down, and worked more on building the community and working on what works for me

    rFactor2 is a sim with wasted potential. It evokes extreme emotions. A few years ago, the competition was less. Currently, they have to correct the following:
    - gross deficiencies in the official content (unrealistic displays in cockpits with a lack of many functions, wrong colors of the tail lights)
    - archaic sounds and a total lack of 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound
    - total lack of front-wheel drive cars with appropriate physics
    - strange DLC policy
    - skin removal after each update
    - more configuration options for FFB would be useful
    - loading times !!!
    - tragic behavior of some AIs
    - full-fledged multiplayer with a rating.
    If they don't correct it, I don't predict a bright future for them...

  • @mibo8701
    @mibo8701 Před 3 lety

    While I agree that paying for cars and tracks 'a le carte' can get expensive, consider this, it is VERY expensive to create this content. Sure, they could take the cheap way of creating content and just have a single set of physics/characteristics for cars and only modify skins, but who wants that? I know I sure don't.
    As for the tracks, I don't have any clue what it costs a company to buy laser scanning equipment or hire a company to do it, then pay for said companies travel/lodging/etc costs to the track, pay for the track to be shutdown for the duration of scanning, then translate scans into the virtual world also adding everything around the track that can be seen (track surfaces, sand, grass, trees, sky, weather, barriers, walls, buildings.. you get the idea). However, while I don't know exactly the cost I'd say it's safe to assume it is VERY expensive.
    In addition, they are a business, which means if we want them to continue releasing updates they need to have a method for paying development costs while also (hopefully) putting money aside to save to eventually pay for developing a new game. Otherwise we'll find them, instead of issuing updates, they'll scrap that, and just release a new game every year and make you buy an entirely new game EVERY YEAR. Going rate for new games being $40-60, so $50avg new game cost x 5years = $250, the way it sits right now you can buy _a lot_ of content for that money.
    Lastly, if you think $250 is a lot of money (which it is don't get me wrong) try going real racing. If you want a cheap sim experience it exists, get a cheap wheel and a crappy title that doesn't have rolling updates and puts little into their vehicles/tracks. Personally, I don't want them to spoil the immersion and what makes them special, that they bring to the table.
    Sorry for the rant, I just hear this comment a lot and I'm not sure all things are considered when saying it. Anyways, thanks for the content, and take care,
    -Michael

    I just bought Rfactor 2 ( in 2022 mainly because the virtual Le Man was run on it and I was intrigued ) I must say though it's now by far my favourite sim for physics, feel and FFB. The rest however needs a complete overhaul. Even down to winning a race in single player, literally nothing happens lol.
    DLC was an expensive add on too for just a few tracks and cars. ( nothing like Iracing though, that just feels like a complete ripoff )
    So much potential here though for sure.

      Similar story here, although I have owned it for a long time. The DLC is still on sale for a few more hours as of posting this comment and I have purchased the endurance and car packs. The cars feel amazing to drive but the online is dead… I like ACC and RaceRoom for it’s populated lobbies and rF2 just doesn’t deliver servers even for its base content… it’s also such a pain when you find a server for a random series that uses a track of a different version whereby you must download and install that version too to just join in the first place (which hasn’t worked for me). Ok rant over, but I just wish I could make the most of physics and ffb, but I can’t bring myself to buy the rest of the DLC knowing I won’t get to make any use of it such as the Reiza pack. I agree the DLC is far too expensive when not on sale.

  • @SoloWingX108
    @SoloWingX108 Před 3 lety

    Nice video. Agreed with most of your points. However, I disagree with your point that it should download everything. For one, not everyone has fast internet and unlimited data (fortunately I do now, but I know what it's like to have to choose and time stuff what can I download, sometimes even waiting a month so we don't run out of data before), as well as all content taking up twice its disk space (1x unpacked in the install folder, 1x in the workshop folder that you cannot uninstall if you want to keep that content installed). For two, most of the content is just... not up to the quality standards, especially compared to paid DLCs. So currently, whenever I reinstall rFactor 2, I have to download everything that's assigned as first-party official content on my end, wait for it to unpackage (takes a LOT even on an SSD) and then get rid of the stuff I do not want. Even worse, not all of the DLC is on par with the quality standards of newer DLC. But if you bought it, you have absolutely no way to uninstall pieces of content you don't want to see, and instead stare at content with no badges and no UI images in their new UI (Reiza stuff especially, I know it will be updated, planned this year). I would prefer if official content one unsubscribed from would stay like that after a reinstall, as well as after unsubscribing from paid content the sim wouldn't force-resubscribe and download it again.

But, loading times are terrible, the game crashes sometimes for no reason and this new UI is useless, clunky and not smooth whatsoever... They need to work on the menus and the UI in order to be smooth otherwise players will be disgusted from the beginning. There is no way anyone are going to create the unknown track from my country, so I'm doing it... Assetto corsa could be more popular and a mod created for it could easily gain more popularity; but there is no reason for me to create such track if i'm not going to enjoy the driving experience.

    I doubt it’s gonna fly. I loved the hot lap experience back in 2017 and bought every DLC for about 2 years to support development. But I’ve leaned that their so advanced simulation engine is prone to setup hacks I did some testing with motec and came across some weirdness. The final nail in the coffin was iracing releasing a new tire model that wasn’t insta kill on slip. I’m racing in VR so ACC is out of the picture. But if you honestly compare rf2 to iRacing or ACC, rf2 is losing. And the edge in feel because of the tire model, is quickly lost due to its unrealistic suspension model. If you know the basics of car setups in real life and get logical/expected results in one sim, and illogical/unexpected results in rf2, the simulation quality cannot be that high to justify a missing online community, usability problems, stability and performance problems next to questionable sim racers using setup hacks to get to the podium.

  • @RossAlexanderSmith
    @RossAlexanderSmith Před 3 lety +2

    I disagree with the statement of it being a hotlap simulator and that the multiplayer is lacking. Because there was limited multiplayer support for so long, leagues have grown and are strongest on this platform than any other. Anyone who spends time trying the leagues that are out there would agree that many of them have some spectacular multiplayer racing with server/admin/stewarding and broadcasting support. But, yes, jump in and drive multiplayer needs major improvement which you did note the competition system came out right as you did your recording. It's helped but has room to grow for sure.

    There are things that I don't understand when playing rFactor 2. I feel like some features are completely half assed. Look at your Aston footage at 31:00. It is OBVIOUS that you need to move the UI. But it is 2021 and why can't you move the god damn UI !!!!! They had time to code that shit... I could go on and on about features that make the game not only look, but stuck in 2012. The menus are a maze, you expand a brand in the list of cars and there you go you're in a scrolling session, the triple screen support is incredible once you spend thirty minutes in the log files trying to make the game boot on the three screens, and even then you still have to bear with the flaws about the driving model. Sure the force feedback is alright but why are the cars always on a street tires level of slip angle all the time, why can't you feel the tires lock up at all (other games use sound but RF2 has no sound which in theory is correct for slick tires, but god damn the steering barely gets lighter when locking up), and why most cars are so broken max steering input in the corners with maximum rake is how to go fast in this game ?

    I had Rfactor 2 installed on my hard drive for several years . It has by far the best physics and FFB available on any simulation but there is no "RACING " to be had. Just a company releasing more cars and track every few months. This only goes so far with virtually no-one online to race with and unadjustable AI in single player scenarios. AI cars will appear up and down the race order from race to race. So if you set up a series of cars and tracks to race with , a top 3 finisher in race 1 could be languishing in dead last the next race. With no ability to adjust the AI talents via an AI Talent Editor , users are left wondering what's the point to racing off-line at all . I've simply grown tired of waiting for this pretty much standard feature to be added to RFactor 2 and no longer play it at all . It has been removed from my hard drive .
