Gregg is clearly the best Imperial Officer of all time; he managed to become friends with Vader, a near impossible task given what we see in the movies.
I’d say he’s more of a respected coworker but yeah I guess to an extent
There have been a few, VERY few but still multiple people who have been "Friends" with Vader, one officer straight even said to his grandson Vader was his friend and told him about the missions they went on together.
Do your job well and don’t have a ego or represent something toxic and you’ll survive around Vader.

I was the model for Gregg. Gregg is my middle name. The story for the entire run of Dark Times was written by Randy Stradley. Most of the art was done by Doug Wheatley. They are both friends of mine and I costume as an imperial officer in the 501st legion. We had long talked about the different people that were officers in the empire, especially the early days and one day they told me I was going to be a character in the series. Doug said he had studied my face so much he had probably looked at me more than my mother had. Had the license with LFL continued, Gregg would have returned as a moff years later. Sadly that was not to be. Still I am extremely touched that I made it into a Star Wars comic.

Kevin Davidson that’s true. This is what makes the light better than the dark. You could be the most powerful being in the galaxy but you can’t trust anyone. To me, this is one of the reasons that make Vader such a tragic character. In the prequels and original trilogies, only the emperor is a dark side user that isn’t left emotionally broken.
sibtain ali it’s gonna hurt to watch the clone wars again. Anakin at the height and prime of his powers and life. Sure they’re at war, but that war ends up being the good ol’ days for him in comparison to what he gets afterwards. Sure he (Vader) looks like a badass on the battlefield but it’s not the same as when he was Anakin. Constantly spied on, manipulated and humiliated.
To be fair, at least it is expected. A master is to train someone to surpass himself, and an apprentice is to plot to take the master's place, as such they are constantly at odds with each other.
If I had to guess, I'd say Vader would have realized early on what a big mistake he made but probably sucked those feelings back and doubled down on his new path to keep pain and remorse at bay. His past was so dark , it would probably break him if he allowed himself to feel again.

I believe I have found the perfect set of strategies as a imperial officer or anyone in the empire can take to survive and even thrive working directly for Darth Vader. One thing that ticks Vader off during his time as the emperor’s enforcer was dealing with the arrogance and superiority complexes of the core world officer class under his command. On occasion hey would challenge Vader’s authority and not fully understanding who is actually in charge which has resulted in a number of demotions or most commonly deaths of imperial officers. Strategy # 1 manage your outward appearance and Attitude. When dealing with Vader understand that the conventional imperial hierarchy and chain of command stops at only two people Vader and the Emperor. If either tell you to do something do it no hesitations regardless of your rank or prior orders from you superiors. Do not appear to be overly frightened or uneasy in Vader’s presence but approach the dark lord with a degree of humility and self respect. Vader despises an officer that is either too much of a sycophant or a self obsessed sociopath.
Another thing Vader despises in an imperial officer is their incompetence failing to carry out the most basic orders. Strategy # 2 when acting under Vader’s orders you must appear or act as competently as possible you’ll save Vader the frustration and yourself a untimely death. In addition to competence be unconventional as well in finding solutions to problems .Vader on a consistent basis has been known to take a affinity to officers that are not bound to convention or protocol taking the initiative it’s that bit of Anakin Skywalker that was still in him.
Strategy # 3 Determine the mood. As a sith Darth Vader is a very emotionaly rich individual under that armor is a lot of pain ,rage and grief. Vader is 99.7 % likely to execute an officer even for the most minor of offenses when he is in a state of frustration extreme anger and agitation. So before you make your report is advisable to ask around the grape vine about what is the Dark lords mood your very survival could depend upon it. It is also important to determine how urgently you give your report to Vader if the report isn’t as serious as say a battle report or the current state of a pursuits of a rebel sellout pirate faction that perhaps it would be better to wait a few hours until Vader has calmed down to make your report.
Strategy # 4 know when to quit while your ahead. In Vader’s eyes you are just a tool useful for the moment in a particular task to be put into storage or be discarded whenever he sees fit.When you have the time it’s best to probably talk with your superior officer and try to arrange a future transfer order to another post. When your work for Vader is done inform him of the transfer and ask the dark lord if there is any thing else he would like you do do for him. Two scenarios occur either he lets you go and you will go down as a legend for surviving Darth Vader or you’ve become invaluable to the dark lord he may even take you into his confidence in that case Strategy # 5 never give Vader a reason to doubt you. In times of uncertainty where the dark lord has extreme difficulty in finding his quarry find a way to lead him through that oblivion.
How to survive Vader: If he is near you, *do not interact and leave it to someone else* If you are interacting with him, be a good servant, because the bad ones find out how it feels to be a rebel

We need an entire show dedicated to an elite Stormtrooper squad. Not Deathtroopers, just normal bucket head soldiers.

I love how in Legends Vader and Palpatine were constantly scheming against one another. Kinda undercuts his betrayal of Palpatine.
gregg is one of the few imperial officers that talked to both palpatine and vader and lived to talk about it
With all these actual serious/loyal/effective Imperial officers or soldiers we see sometimes in the comics, imagine if Vader had formed a whole squad regrouping all of them.
If he did that, there wouldn't be a imperial fleet, there would be an imperial group, a star destroyer, and a couple of cruisers, as well as about 20 smaller ships. This group would be feared though, and the rebels would have been no more.

Vader didn’t mind people who where honest, hard working and not slimy like most imperial high ups. If you where all of those and not a normal stormtrooper, he was actually quite generous and somewhat kind (compared to how he was with others) to you.

He said don’t worry son it will be over soon. Then I saw he was a General! I apologized immediately. He said get my some coffee and we can forget about it. I ran to the mess tent and made a fresh pot.
