Very instructional. They'll probably have to do a reprint of that manual now.

Haha...I have had many "shake my head and sigh" moments as well while fixing stuff! With a few choice words as well!

I’ve used araldite, flatted with 600 wet a dry to repair severe pitting on shafts. Very effective.

Nice repair on the water pump - who has not had that DOH moment on reassembly?🤣

Think you are a skilled mechanic :-) Note: >80 % of all seal failures are caused by defective bearings. I never replace a shaft seal without replacing bearings.

You guys are awesome! I fumbled my way through the rebuild of my water pump, now i know why some things go the way they should. Also foolishly purchased a rebuild kit from VV Australia for over $1000 , won't do that again. Have fun in Indo, I'm trying to catch you.

Could not agree more with Mangus, Nigel is the man!! The book should be on every cruising boat. If it's not in the book, it might not be worth knowing. Jeff and Julie s/v OoLaLa Westsail 32 #81

This is why I enjoy this channel so much !
Sail boat systems are pretty simple overall but because there are a lot of them very few people understand them all ! Magnus has a great understanding of many of them but he also realises that there are gaps in his knowledge and is not afraid to show what he has learned when repairing or upgrading various elements.
One of the most crucial aspects of any maintenance tasks is having the right tools for the job and that requires forward thinking, it's no good realising you can't replace that seal or bearing because you haven't got the right puller, you have to know what tools you will require before you start the job !

In lieu of a torque wrench...1/2 a turn before it breaks.

Ordered it! Plus Calder’s other book on diesel engines. Probably a lot of cross over, but…….. Did you know, though, that Nigel Calder was (now deceased) tagged as a climate change denier? Sad, especially from an acclaimed Science Writer.
Like you, I know a lot of stuff, but what I know nothing about is radios and aerials. Got any good books on that?

It must be so comforting to have a Magnus on board who can turn his hand to any problem and resolve it, as well as saving you a fortune on repair bills, because I am now very forgetful whenever I strip things down no matter how simple or complex I take pictures at stages so that when I come back to it at a later date I do not have to worry, thanks also to Russel, it is nice how the boating community help each other.

    • @LifeinaNutshell

It is lovely to know that when things break there will always be a solution to sorting it. Magnus’ attitude to such issues means that Nutshell is rarely a stressful place to be. W.

The best place to send something would be: Magnus Eriksson, Autopro Cannonvale, 2/11 Shute Harbour Road, Cannonvale, Queensland, Australia 4802. Thank you. W.
