    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins), Jack, Arthur (Cary Elwes), and Quincey discover that Lucy has become a vampire when her coffin is empty. On her return, the men stab her through the heart and behead her.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Based on Bram Stoker's classic 1897 novel, this film from Francis Ford Coppola and screenwriter James Victor Hart offers a full-blooded portrait of the immortal Transylvanian vampire. The major departure from Stoker is one of motivation as Count Dracula (Gary Oldman) is motivated more by romance than by bloodlust. He punctures the necks as a means of avenging the death of his wife in the 15th century, and when he comes to London, it is specifically to meet heroine Mina Harker (Winona Ryder), the living image of his late wife (Ryder plays a dual role, as do several of her costars). Anthony Hopkins is obsessed vampire hunter Van Helsing, while Keanu Reeves takes on the role of Jonathan Harker, and Tom Waits plays bug-eating Renfield. Bram Stoker's Dracula was the winner of three Academy Awards.
    CREDITS:

      Marc Þeawes I think it's "Exeloume" listed in the credits, Not appearing on the OST. It sounds to me like a tweaked, hyper-creepy arrangement of "Mina's photograph" Since it's listed right after "love song to a vampire" in the credits, Exeloume could possibly be the piece of music played after Dracula dies on the altar, but I'm pretty sure that's called Ascension.

      Dudes, I don't think it was intended to be a song for the soundtrack - I remember in the book, when Stoker introduces the brides, he says that they had a laughter that was like a tinkling of glass or something. Either way, yeah, creep city. Added with that makeup, sweet Jaysus.

    Sadie Frost nailed this. I've seen the documentary and it took them a long time to make this particular scene since the child was so scared, kept crying and didn't want to be cuddled by her. I mean look at her. with all the makeup and that eerie gown, it's a childhood nightmare. Well done.

    • @chooseyourpoison5105
      @chooseyourpoison5105 Před 7 lety +30

      Have you read the original book? The whole novel has more sex in it than the Kama Sutra, but because it was written in the Victorian era, it's all in metaphorical form. The chapter where Jonathan shares "kisses" with the brides and they "sucked my blood as I lay in an agony of delight" - is of course a metaphor for sex and fellatio. The chapter where Arthur drives a stake into Lucy's heart, goes into some detail about how Arthur groans when driving the "stake" into Lucy, and Lucy's body "convulsed and writhed, and a scream came from those open lips" is a metaphor for penetration and female orgasm. Try reading (or re-reading) the book with the sex-metaphor viewpoint in mind - it's quite fascinating to see how Bram Stoker basically managed to write porn scenes without upsetting Victorian sensibilities in the slightest.

    Fun fact: Lucy wasn't suppose to calm down the little girl. The girl was terrified from Sadie Frost's makeup and the latter did that to calm her down, and Francis just threw it in.

    I love how they filmed the part where she retreats to her coffin. She is actually climbling out of the coffin, but they then had the footage played backwards for those eerie, unnatural movements. They did the same thing for the vampire window scenes in Salem's Lot 1979 to chilling effect. So much more effective than cgi. God I miss eerie, otherwordly vampires
    Also apparently the eerie music we hear at the beginning is Lucy "singing" a lullaby for the toddler. Chills...

    “She lives beyond the grace of god. A wanderer throughout the darkness. She is vampyr, nosferatu. These creatures do not die like the bee after the first sting, but instead grow strong and become immortal, once infected by another nosferatu.”

    Gotta love Coppola's filmmaking techniques and his reliance on practical effects for this film. Notice the slightly unsettling way Lucy gets into the coffin? It was achieved by filming Sadie Frost as she climbed OUT of the coffin, and then running the film backwards.

    To this day can't believe this movie premiered a day before Christmas. Almost as if it was an homage to The Exorcist. When Blade Runner was re-released back then during it's special director's cut phase, the trailer to Dracula was played before the movie, and people laughed at the trailer release date. So finally when I got to see it, I saw grown men cover their eyes during this scene. It was shocking to see her vomit blood like that. It was so unexpected, nothing like other Dracula films before. Those eerie haunting voices, like sweet bells casting mesmerizing spells on the men was so creepy. This Dracula is still my favorite version of the book.

      Claire Stark, good point. I still remember how this was portrayed in the book (And this was a pretty flawless interpretation of it), making it clear through Dr. Seward's narration how horrified they were. It was made especially clear with a line that said something like "When Lucy (I call the thing that stood before us 'Lucy' because it bore her shape) saw us..." That simple line truly demonstrated that, although the unholy monster that stood before them bore a slight physical resemblance to the lovely and warm- hearted young lady they had once known, it truly wasn't her anymore.
