Honda CT 125 Major Wreck On Mountain Pass

  • On a trip to deliver supplies to a needy village in the mountains West of Chiang Mai, we had three of our five Honda CT125 involved in a crash. Lucky for them, only minor injuries, but it could have been much worse. Improper weight distribution of the weight on the rear of two of the bikes could have been the cause of the wreck..... We will be doing a video discussing the wreck and what might have caused it.....

    Another great video. I watched it on the big screen TV last night. I read your crash analyses in your reply to one of the earlier comments. The back flip that started the crash looked like one from the Red Bull Impossible Hill Climb videos on CZcams! Glad everyone is ok. I do wonder why the village was located where it was. In the scenery shots it looks like rice paddy terraces created on the mountainside took a lot of work to make in a difficult location. Also, some of the women of the village seemed to be wearing unusually colorful dresses. Was that their daily dress, or was it special because they had your group visiting that day? I read about the history of the Lahu people in Thailand, and they tend to live in remote locations so that they can maintain the Lahu way of life. Is it possible that the villagers were Lahu or decedents of Lahu? I wonder if the Thai speaking leaders of the ride noticed a difference in dialect in the village from the Thai spoken in Chiang Mai?

      Not sure what tribe background they have there, but I'll ask Natta to find out. They were told to expect us in advance, that is why so many of the women had on their very best skirts. They will only take those out to wear for special occasions. I guess we were special enough. Because we were expected, I didn't want any of our group to stop and wait till we came back down, that is why I kept telling them that I'd ride their bikes up and then the five Thai guys who were leading the group, started jockeying riders up and down so they could ride Shawn and Nattas bikes up for us. Good thing to because I was getting tired walking down to get a bike..... You'd of like this ride Vaughn........

      @@Vintage_Garage That cement lanes where only a tad over a foot wide and you'll understand why I started riding the dirt when we get the video out about what happened to cause the crash. Those two bikes were very unstable when we got to the steep stuff and now we know why and the problem has been taken care of....... The dirt was just so much wider and forgiving if you got a little wide on the turns......

    What Model is the red honda that the thai guy was riding? semms like a mix of street and offroad bike, i like it

    • @TeamDNFracing
      @TeamDNFracing  Před 11 měsíci

      Honda used to make a bike that resembled their flat track bikes of the 90's. I believe they called them FTR 200, FTR 220 and the FTR 240. This is one of them, it's the FTR 240. It's a really good bike..... I wouldn't mind having one myself. It has a pretty low seat height and has a torquey motor....

    She looped out, as we call it in MX happens all the time

    • @TeamDNFracing
      @TeamDNFracing  Před 9 měsíci

      Those bikes don't have enough power to "Loop Out" on their own. Something has to cause it and the weight distribution was way off and that is what caused the bike to go skywards. This was the second time that had happened to her. Once I got on it and rode it, the problem became very evident to me as the bike on any incline was horrible to control the front end. The weight extending behind the rear axle had the geometry so far off the when the bike was set on the center stand, the front tire was off the ground and the rear tire was on the ground. Totally opposite of any other bike in the group, except her husbands that was set up identical to hers. With the amount of weight she had in that box on the back, when she downshifted from second to first with still at full throttle it looped out. Now that we have taken the extended rack and the big box off of their bikes, it is impossible to get the front tire off the ground and the bike rides steady without the front tire hunting and searching all over the road. The only reason we showed the video footage of the wreck is so others don't make the same mistake of putting an extension rack on their bike and adding a lot of weight back there. Luckily, her and her daughter neither one suffered any injuries on this wreck..... Thanks for the comment

    what was it i back it up a couple time to see what happened and still couldn't figure out what happened. is it so steep that she just did a wheely and flipped over backwards and why did everyone crash

    • @TeamDNFracing
      @TeamDNFracing  Před rokem +2

      That is coming in the next video. What happens is when you put so much weight behind the rear axle, it messes up the weight balance of the bike. Her box on the bike was attached to an extended rack so the entire box was behind her rear axle. With 25 pounds back there, it was acting like a person setting back there and with the steepness of the road, it was very steep. When she downshifted from 2nd to 1st, the front end just went skyward. When she started to wreck, the other two bikes behind her made abrupt turns to the left to avoid her and the child as well as the bike. Bad thing about these very steep mountain paved roads is when a bike comes to a stop, most people will just put both feet down on the pavement and that is what Shawn and Daniel did. Neither one of them kept their right foot on the rear brake. The front brake alone is not enough to stop a bike on these roads. With the bike pointed up the hill, all of the weight is now loaded toward the rear of the bike. The rear brake would have stopped them from rolling backwards and into each other and then the crash. If you noticed, Robert immediately went to the right and behind Natta. As soon as he stopped forward motion, his bike started to skid back down the hill. What he did was to gas the bike and let the engine brake the skid for him. He then put his right foot on the rear bake pedal and controlled the bike. I was in the back of the group and when I saw Natta wheelie over I immediately stopped my bike with the rear brake pedal and then Daniels bike slid down into mine. I didn't fall because I had stopped and was firmly stable on the road. These mountain roads are dangerous and we plan on doing some riding where we can practice how to keep the bikes stable on these types of roads. The two big boxes you see on the backs of Natta's and Shawn's bikes will more than likely not be on there again.....
