  • Welcome back, today we're discussing Valve's VR future. This is how the Index 2 and SteamVR can make a huge comeback. While this is mostly copium there is a potential for PCVR to make a revival against Quest 2, Quest 3, and PSVR2. I hope the valve index 2 or the Deckard is everything we're waiting for and Valve gives us new VR games likes Half-Life Alyx

Nope. Meta almost singlehandedly popularised VR to the point it is now by subsidising their headset. Valve wouldn't have done anything for the lower end price wise of the market and it would have remained extremely niche.

@@CondemnedToBeMe I'm not a Meta as a company fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I have to call a spade a spade. The package they put together with the Quest 2 made it extremely consumer friendly. The combination of the price, it being standalone so it just works out of the box, wireless, inside out tracking (i.e. no base stations) gave VR relative mass appeal and opened up the market to most people who probably never would have tried it and it also didn't abandon the core gaming audience by keeping the PCVR functionality.
I was very skeptical when they completely absorbed Oculus, but Meta has invested heavily in this and pushed the technology further overall than Oculus ever would have on their own in the space of time they did within this price point. Like you, I hate to admit it, but from a tech point of view, it's been in good hands with Meta.
We could question the motivations of things like the Metaverse and what they really want with your information etc, but if say Valve was leading the VR charge, the tech would be moving at a snails pace and they'd probably be bored with it by now like they are with everything else they come up with.

I suspect Valve is still waiting on some technological & manufacturing advances. I expect them to only focus on the high end, but not as expensive as Apple. As long as the Quest line can be used as PC headsets the cheaper end is covered. In effect Meta is subsidizing adoption of PCVR as a side effect of their subsidizing stand-alone VR and that takes pressure off Valve needing to rush out any new hardware to enable the expansion of PCVR.

The blessing is that every game produced is only released if the devs are passionate enough to finish it, but the curse is that stuff takes forever and there’s basically no organization LOL

Valve are secretive. Personally I think they will make a standalone headset that works similar to the steam deck for under $1000. It will be the best thing on the market and also be capable of PCVR via a real display port. It will sell out but hopefully become market leader, and hopefully be enough to make Meta look like a joke. I don't think they will just aim at die hard VR enthusiasts this time. The steam deck has been an experiment leading to the Index 2. But I might be completely wrong, who knows with valve.

"The steam deck has been an experiment leading to the Index 2"
No - it's an experiment to see if they can take the Switch's form factor mobility and put it to use in increasing Linux gaming marketshare.
Tim Sweeney and Epic make the most noise about distrusting MS intentions with Windows, but Valve have always been searching for an opportunity to end MS dominance in gaming platforms, with their funding of DXVK, Zink and various other initiatives for Proton being the outcome of that.
They don't need to make an Index 2 with Deck hardware - they can just tether it.
The best version of VR will always be a compromise between comfort, portability and power.
Preferably Index 2 will be able to tether both compute from a future Deck AND it's power source meaning that you don't need a heavy battery balanced on your head.
Cutting VR hardware down to just displays, optics and earphones would cut the weight of a headset significantly, thus hugely improving comfort.

What Valve _should have done_ was release a refreshed Index in 2021. The only thing outdated about the Index is its resolution. It is otherwise still formidable even against the newest headsets releasing in 2023. So this refresh really would have only needed updated panels. And it would have probably made sense to throw in some low hanging fruit like improved cable routing and better joysticks to improve longevity and reduce RMAs.
Otherwise, I fear that Valve is aiming so high with the Deckard that by the time it comes out, their involvement in VR will have become essentially irrelevant in the market. A mid-refresh would have been great for staying in the game and keeping PCVR from languishing in the meantime.

    • @HybridEnergy

That's what the Quest Pro is for.
The coming "Mirror Lake" design is likely to be Quest Pro 2 or 3.
Regular Quest is designed for mass market price appeal to increase the overall market of VR while steadily improving the headset.
And it's not like Quest 3 is cr&p either, it's a very decent upgrade over Quest 2, albeit less than I would have hoped for after 3 years with a more expensive price tag.
What mass market VR desperately needs is eye tracking to allow dynamic foveated rendering techniques for more efficient use of the meagre standalone headset SoC performance.

    1) I think the work they're doing with the steam deck will move over to the Index 2. This means we could be seeing a pretty large jump in just raw performance over any other headset because of the power of x86. Stand alone linux support being a common thing going forward as AMD is a big player in that space. Let alone - most things can still run in a Windows emulation layer that could be used across a number of applications and even other emulation support such as android.
    2) They need to get away from LH tracking. While it does give the best tracking performance, it doesnt have the best tracking value or volume. Meaning you are always stuck in the room you set it up for - and can' take it with you into other rooms or places. While I know many will be sad, there are still tons of ways to make vision tracking one of the best out there going forward. Meta also demonstrated that to be a thing they should really focus on doing.
    3) More modulity needs to become stander. The ability to add on that eye tracking, face tracking, wireless, and etc should be a high focus.
    4) Eye tracking - personally, should become stander across future headsets. There are just too many benefits to be ignored with performance just being icing on the cake.
    5) Design for comfort, size, and getting in and out of VR should also be something that is highly recommended. Going pankcake and other methods to make as small as possible - even maybe going as far - as in number 1 - not have it in the headset like others are doing - but instead have it as more of a pocket pc with the battery so no extra weight has to be head. It would also be like 3 - in that - if they come out with another steam deck - you would just upgrade the brains vs the whole headset.
    6) Please still support the cable - I know not everyone is happy with it - but the cable is pretty much going to have the best of a lot of worlds still - and wireless should be additional - this way if you still want the wireless you can get it - but it wont block others from getting more out of the hardware they have.

"This means we could be seeing a pretty large jump in just raw performance over any other headset because of the power of x86"
More likely it will retain an ARM SoC for standalone mode and they will make tethering to Steam Deck 2 and similar handhelds as easy as possible.
"Eye tracking - personally, should become stander across future headsets. There are just too many benefits to be ignored with performance just being icing on the cake"
Performance is by far the #1 reason for eye tracking.
Social interaction or control schemes offer interesting possibilities, but the best reason to spend extra for that hardware is the perf benefits, especially in standalone mode.

Since the Quest3 will bring little extra to the game i'm waiting for the Deckard! The Index stood(and still stands) out because of the 120/144Hz and 120 FOV! So yeah I expect them to have those as a minimum spec now, i'm personally hoping that they go the same way as with the Index a new tech product for maybe a higher price instead of losing battle with Meta Pico and probably HTC and Google/Samsung in the future. Or maybe 2 version or like you said make it modulair. But that would mean more devices and production would be more expensive. Game wise i totally agree that Sony as well as others should not battle with games like "console wars" but just port them wherever they can. Also ANY game developer should at the very least have VR support these days imo, not motion controls perse but display wise definitely! (any sim game that comes out without it, you just can't take serious anymore!)

The two games that really made me realize that are Phasmophobia and Devour! Both are niche horror multiplayer games with thriving communities that have VR support. Without that PC cross play, there is a good chance those games are dead in VR or just stuck in early access and not profitable if they were strictly VR games.
Little tidbit of self promotion here I just did a video on Devour explaining the game and had a sentence or two on this.(just about verbatim what I said above) If you haven’t played Devour, the game is awesome, I know horror isn’t really your thing, but the game is a blast with friends.

For me what I would want from an Index 2 is:
    Eye tracking
    Foveated Rendering
    Knuckle Controllers 2.0
Higher refresh rate (165hz or more)/ resolution (don't need the highest resolution but better screen)
Equally good audio and microphone to Index (they should sell the headphones separately at this point as a normal gaming headset)
    Durability improvements
Tracking equally as good or better than Index
    QA/minor cost/comfort/material improvements
This is my exact list in that order. I am indifferent whether it has optional wireless or not (it'd be really nice). I don't care about if it has built in processing power, that would be lost on me, and a waste of the headset's budget for me, if they want to make an alternate version that does for people sure.

Valve is absolutely leaning into VR modding. Pretty sure that the HL2 VR mod is considered official on steam and it's a banger.
Either valve has a concrete vision of what they want their headset to be and are waiting on the tech to catch up in a way that they can make it somewhat affordable, or they are stuck like Nintendo with F-Zero and are having trouble settling on what they can do to truly push the industry forward. Either way whatever they release will be good, even if flawed, or having some kinks to iron out initially.
My personal wish would be a headset with inside out tracking, coming with upgraded knuckles with constellations...OR a quest 3 like tracking system, but otherwise the knuckles are compatible with existing lighthouses so you can upgrade for superior tracking later on.
Couple that with wireless connection, with the option of cable, and a GOOD battery. 30,000 mAh minimum and at the back as a counterweight. They could go bone standard with displays, 2160 square per eye looks good...period, though better displays will likely be affordable 20 years from now when they finally announce the thing.
Being able to run the majority of steam vr games natively even with reduced visuals, would be huge, and maybe subsidizing the optimization of said games so devs who are already having trouble making a profit from such a small pie aren't out of pocket would help a lot of underappreciated gems find a new life, a lot like WiiU games ported to the Switch.

I've seen a ton of conjecture about moving off the HTC Lighthouse base stations. Personally that would be a massive mis-step IMO since that tracking system has much better resolution (precision) and update framerate. Additionally, it doesn't require ANY computational power for tracking within the headset (more chips in the headset means more power drain and more heat, not to mention weight), and much less burden on your PC CPU to boot. It also renders completely useless the full-body tracking and tracking peripherals many of us on the HTC Lighthouse ecosystems have invested in.

  • @jackdiddley
    @jackdiddley Před rokem +1

Back in 2017 I had a choice, Valve or Oculus. I chose Oculus for a few reasons.
They had the best games...at that time
Oculus was less expensive, a stated goal of Oculus was to keep it affordable.
Oculus could play games on Steam but not vice versa... again at that time.
And I simply liked the controllers better.
What you have proposed here is intriguing, would Valve really put out multiple tiers of HMDs?
My VR PC is now over five years old and I am at a crossroads, another choice.
Do I replace my PC? PCVR2 has now become an entity in the market but hasn't blown my hair back... yet. I'm hoping to see some things around holiday. If so I might go that direction.
I hadn't really thought about Valve until just now watching your video. Another direction I would consider IF they show some commitment to keeping it going.
My thoughts: I will follow the games. I am in VR to play games. I barely use Facebook and honestly, when I do, it is only to promote my shows. I am not interested in social VR. Maybe there is a huge market for it, but I am not a customer in that market.
My hopes for VR is playing my favorite games in VR as an option without a mod or unofficial means. I would rather play GTA 6 sitting down with a controller with an HMD, than GTA SA with hand tracking. I have at least 2000 hours in GTA Online since 2020 when I started playing it on PC. There is no way I would spend that much time standing and moving around. I couldn't do a Skyrim or Fallout walking every step on a treadmill, or even just standing. You look like you're in pretty good shape Matteo, but I'm old and pudgy, I can't be doin' all that.
Don't get me wrong, there is a certain satisfaction in Swordsman when you swing that sword, or Alyx when you free aim. I'd love to see more games with hand reaching and more depth. We need some sit-down-and-chill games that are fun to play in VR too. I'd be all in on whoever looks loke they might produce that.
For me to go to Valve they would have to show some commitment. For me to go PSVR2 they would have to simply make it attractive for AAA games to offer a VR option the way Squadrons does.
If Sony advertised that I could play CP2077 in VR without hand tracking just with a controller on PSVR2 next week, I would own a PS5 and PSVR by next week.
Another great vid bro. Food for thought, great ideas, let's see how it pans out...

Yes VR is in a weird state now, compared to when it came out. I went for oculus rift for the same reasons as you. Then a Rift S then Quest 2. I have a RTX 2080s and personally I find it struggles on certain games using Quest 2, especially driving sims. I got PSVR2 last month as I am reluctant to upgrade my GPU, the price of PSVR2 was half the price of a GTX 4080 (I already own a ps5). I really think Sony will get some AAA titles out there, i'm looking forward to RE4 in VR.
Im actually quite blown away by PSVR2, it's PCVR quality without the faff, but I did end up buying some games I already own on PCVR. The library is small, but what is there is great quality. GT7, Resident Evil Village, Synapse. But im still waiting for some upgrade on PCVR as I have such a large game library in steam. I really hope valve make a stand alone HMD that is cable of playing steam games, and can connect to PC as well. and not have all the artefacts of Quest 2.

But give me a beefier Steam Deck on the back and an Index in the front with all my Steam library, I would pay quadruple digits on that.
Which, sadly, I think we will have to. The Steam Deck integrated GPU cannot push the 4K+ pixels at 90 Hz we need for decent VR, and it is already subsidized. So a beefier PC, probably a larger battery, and then the HMD itself, I don't think Valve can do that sub 1k$. Just remember, you get much more for this than the Index, which still needed a really expensive gaming PC to do anything.

I know this video is old but now the quest3 and psvr 2 has been released and offers all these features you mentioned in the video anyways,, valve will need to supersede these features or at least combine these if they want to charge close to the 1500 that’s predicted the headset will cost . I’d personally like to see a wider fov like the pimax is offering as well as having the features of the quest3 such as wireless and augmented reality experiences and psvr 2 foveated rendering - they will need to pull something big out of the bag above and beyond the current headsets if they are going to charge this much - maybe more games on the level of half life akyx or even better and maybe mobile gaming in the headset which is on a higher graphical fidelity that what the quest can currently offer - if they could do all that then they will be onto a winner .

Only thing is though it’s gonna cost around 400 and it’s not working properly at the moment and if people can buy a quest for around that price then what’s the point ? I think that would be something that this market really needs, because right now in regards of VR Meta is leading the consumer friendly VR market. Mainly thanks to it's pricetag which is still lower than ALL of the other brands and the only real competitor in this space would be HTC, if their more consumer friendly headsets that they released lately were not so ... well ... underwelming would be the right word? Because for the price tag 600-ish €/$ you are getting sub-par Vive Flow whic hhas a looooot of problems and other option it's either the Classic Vive with Base Stations OR XR elite which both are aobe 1 000 €/$ price tag of which only which can justify it is Vive, XR elite (at least according to many reviews) does not hold to to the quality of the cheaper Quest Pro

I'd like to see Valve compete more with Apple than Meta. Especially in terms of the Vision Pro's compute power, pass through and display technology, but ditch the glass and aluminium, ditch the front facing display and switch to similar inside out tracking to bring costs down. Then have both the compute and battery performance as external, cabled and modular (where the price point differences and upgradeability would come into play), aiming to improve the ergonomics of VR with smaller, lighter headsets and a "Walkman" or "Ipod" equivalent format with the compute/power unit (of various spec levels) and the glasses. Edit: It also still needs controllers for gaming, even if they are also part of the modularity.
