    Hey there Roy. Like the style of these tongs. The style is a little different than a couple other videos I've seen on railroad spike tongs. They look like they will do the job just fine. Well done sir!

    Hi Roy, 3\4"is 19mm 5\8" is 16mm but close enough, great tongs the first I have seen made this way for Rail spikes, very practical opposed to bolt jaw tongs that hold the shaft of the spike.

    I made my very first pair of tongs last night and when I went to cool them I got thinking about how every piece of bare metal in my shop gets rusty bc of our wonderful southern climate with 90% humidity. I thought, hey, why not cool them in used motor oil (which is in plentiful supply around my shop) and keep them from rusting by seasoning the metal while at the same time let the heat suck some of the oil into the joint itself and act as antisieze. Then I watch this video and am astonished an accomplished smith like yourself does the same thing for the same reason. I do believe I might keep this little hobby going. Thanks for the vids.

    An anvils edge should have different zones for different radius and a crisp edge, so basically four different or more edges. Different edges makes the anvil very multi tasking.

    This will definitely help me use railroad spikes. Usually use bolt tongs and they would be a pain.

    Nice tong method. I notice all your tongs are 95% the same method. It works good. Have you ever tried to Fuller the bit from the boss and twist the law for flat or box tongs? Works really good for me. I think black bear forge ( John ) have it a try. But it's best to round out the twist. You should try it. Allot faster in my experience for those 2 tong types. Joe.

    Now have a source of RR Spikes, so re-reviewing yopur how-to. When you switched to a "lighther hammer", how light was it?\

  • @WildBoreWoodWind
    @WildBoreWoodWind Před 6 lety

    Roy, your tongs are very lightweight, I prefer to use heavier stock, then cut the boss and nibs off and forge weld the reins. I think it gives you a sturdier set of tongs, but each to his own.

  • @nigelross6123
    @nigelross6123 Před 6 lety

    Very slick, is there a reason bolt jaw tongs wouldn't work though?

    • @BrianDaleNeeley
      @BrianDaleNeeley Před 6 lety

      Bolt jaw tongs should work, but they are going to hold on the shaft of the spike, which in most cases would be fine. These tongs will allow you to work right up to the spike head, and that could be beneficial in some instances.
      These tongs are fairly specialized, and would be great if you do a lot of work with RR spikes. For people who don't do a lot of spike forging, bolt tongs make more sense.

    • @nigelross6123
      @nigelross6123 Před 6 lety

      Brian Neeley, thanks for the explanation. I'm just trying to get started into smithing and I have access to a lot of rr spikes since there is a 3 ft scrap pile of them near my house. I was just planning to make a set of bolt jaw and make a bunch of tooling but I understand now that I'll have access to more material if I just hold the head. Thanks again.

    The jaw was offset on both sides I noticed , so same tong blank as normal you just center up the jaw with the reigns ????
