Vietnam currently has a very good relationship with Japan so I think the history book was deliberately altered to minimize Japanese crimes. Even though the famine of 1945 was a horror in the mind of old people and there are many stories in Vietnamese literature like the poor have to eat the vomit of the rich.
The background song is On ward to Hanoi or Tiến về Hà Nội, it is a beautiful war song in Japan resistance war.

more like, shifting the blame on the French and the feudal structure, which makes sense since the Viet Minh will go on and fight these 2 in the next 9 years.
also, maybe the Japanese were the invisible villains - sure they gave the order, but the one who directly seized the food were local Vietnamese and French bureaucrats, so they took most of the blame since the common people didn't know better.

The attrocities of the Japanese were overshadowed by the the fact nearly a thousand Imperial Japanese soldiers refused to surrender defected to the Viet minh to aid them against the returning french colonial regime

Nice to see videos discussing the Japanese occupations of Asia-Pacific from the perspective of one of the Southeast Asian nations because honestly there should be more videos discussing about that.
The history of Vietnam seems to overwhelmingly focused on the Vietnam War and thus the suffering caused by the Japanese Empire seems overlooked but this video helps corrects his problem.

06:00 The Japanese here carry 90% of the blame, the French actually had a system in place designed to prevent famines but the local Japanese garrison refused to distribute the rice to the people. Sure, the U.S. Americans bombed some critical infrastructure but with enough workarounds these would have been able to be fixed and even without the bombings the Japanese would've disallowed the rice to be given to the people.
1945 was the deadliest year in Vietnamese history because of deliberate Japanese action (making it the 3rd worst famine of the war only behind Churchill's famine in Bengal and the Japanese famine in the Netherlands East-Indies). The Việt Minh were able to feed people so quickly during their relief efforts because they simply took the rice from the Japanese soldiers and as far as I'm aware of no Japanese soldier starved. This means that there was enough rice, the Japanese simply didn't want to distribute it.

Under bad feudal leadership (Nguyen dynasty), which later surrender themselves to European colonialists (French), got colonised, got invaded again (Imperial Japan) and the colonial government surrendered to the invasion force and join in the oppression and exploitation, resulting in heavy famine. Kicked out the second force, colonial country invade again, kicked them out too, that caused the friend of the colonial country (USA) to invade. Kicked their ass off. Neighbour (Khmer Rouge) went insane (supported by many countries, communist and capitalist) and starts killing everyone, including your people, so their ass got kicked. They happened to be supported by much bigger neighbour (China), who didn't like their subordinate got kicked in the ass, so the big dude do a lil border conflict. In the end, got their ass served to them too.

Thailand wasn't fascist. Japan literally had to invade Thailand to force them to join their cause. All Thailand wanted to do, before WWII, was get back the territories that the French stole, not 4 decades earlier--mostly along the Mekong River but also the border regions with Cambodia. There was no crazy Thai mission to take over other countries and all that nonsense, the goal was literally to undo what recent British and French Imperialism had done to Thailand. In fact, the war was so unpopular, the Thai ambassador to USA refused to give the war declaration. Anti-Japanese feelings continued for a long time after the war--people were still angry about it as recently as the 1970s, when there were protests against Japanese factories. These days, no one thinks about all that stuff, life moves on, forgive people if they make a change for peace.

Thanks for highlighting the Japanese occupation period of Asia, it still gets ignored so heavily by most historical accounts of people outside of the region who only start the Vietnam story with the events after WW2 that led to the US Vietnam War.
To most Westerners, the Japanese were the victims of WW2 because of the nuclear bombs, they don't know about the Japanese-run concentration camps, the rape of Nanking, the war crimes in South East Asia or the Japanese Mengeles in "Unit 731".
And honestly, I am still only starting to learn about the extent of the Japanese war crimes thanks to people like you.
