  • It's time for a big plant propagation update on many of the different plants I've shown you over the summer. There's also a couple I didn't film before but attempted like Fothergilla and I also show you how I'm doing some cuttings of a Yoshino Cherry tree. Yoshino cherry trees are in the prunus family and I've found to have good success with other prunus varieties through hardwood cuttings.
    Plant Propagation Updates Include:
    Boxwoods (Video: • Boxwood Propagation fr... )
    Crape Myrtles (Video: • How to Propagate Crape... )
    Rosemary (Video: • How to Propagate Rosem... )
    Fothergilla (Info: growingthehomegarden.com/2019...)
    'Otto Luken' cherry laurel (Video: • How to Propagate 'Otto... )
    Hydrangeas (Video: • Simple Hydrangea Cutti... )

    Thank you for watching! I have a lot more information on plants and plant propagation on Growing The Home Garden: www.Growingthehomegarden.com

    Wow! I just can't believe the success you had with your boxwood cuttings! They look positively amazing! I'll have to go back to your original video to check out the timing of when you took those cuttings and whether or not you used rooting hormone (I'm guessing you didn't). Congratulations! I hope I have half of that success with my "winter cuttings"!

      Just commented on your comment! 😀 I think I did use rooting hormone (can't remember at the moment) but I don't think it is necessary for boxwoods. They are very good at rooting.

      @@Growingthehomegarden I failed miserably last summer, taking cuttings in August, but I think I can track my many mistakes during that process, so at least I can't say I'm mystified as to why they failed. I'm currently following a winter sowing method (2-3 months for results), but if all else fails, I'll try again in June. Thanks for your help, Dave!

    I'm not sure if you check back on earlier videos when new comments come in, but I'm very curious to know how you handled over wintering your amazing Boxwood root cuttings in this video. I believe you said you were going to pot them up (sometime shortly after this video, because of the amazing roots you created). Once you potted them up, where did you keep them over the winter? I do think you have milder temps than we have here in Buffalo, but I'd be so appreciative if you could tell me what you did with the boxwoods once they were potted up as it got closer to December/January. Thanks so much Dave!

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden  Před 3 lety +1

      Our temps are much milder that up in Buffalo however we did have some 5-10 degree temps for several nights a couple weeks back. I ended up keeping them in the original container and they did just fine over the winter. I left them under a small tree for the winter. So just a little bit of shelter. I think in general if the plant is hardy in your area it stands a good chance of making it through the winter. just fine.

    • @jlnriddick
      @jlnriddick Před 3 lety +2

      @@Growingthehomegarden Great to know those details, Dave. If my cuttings happen to succeed, they'll have all summer to create reasonable roots, and leaving them in the same tote through the winter sounds perfect. I do sometimes forget that if they are hardy enough to live and grow in Buffalo, they're hardy enough to winter outside in a protected area. Thanks for the reminder, and for your help!

      @@Growingthehomegarden If it gets cold enough to freeze the soil solid in a container, and stays that cold for four or five days or longer , it will likely kill almost any small woody plant, because it will simply dry out, due to the low humidity and inability of the roots to take up more water. I've even seen mature trees die this way a few times, but again this refers to LONG spells of VERY cold weather, not just a couple of days.

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden  Před 2 lety +3

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden  Před 2 lety

      It's hard to say really without knowing what your process was. Usually it's drying out that is what causes cuttings to die. Make sure you are maintaining moisture in the container. Also make sure the tool you are using to make the cuttings is clean. If your cutting tool had a fungal or bacterial disease on it it could have transferred to the cuttings.

    What type of root medium do u use, and where are u located and done those crape myrtle cuttings? I recently hired a phony landscaper to move my purple c. m. dwarf shrub. He apparently, without my knowledge just pulled out my dormant shrub and planted in a hole in front of my home. Its now almost a month and half since and i see no growth at all, but watering it daily. I did scrape some branches and see that they are green, which tells me its still alive, perhaps still in shock. Lately I noticed the top part that i had scraped a couple of weeks ago, and not green anymore, but still green closer to the base. None of the branchs have a node that i can see. its only about a foot and half tall. would you know if I can salvage this shrub, without nodes and still green at the base?

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden  Před 3 lety

      I've used a combination of mediums successfully with the crape myrtle cuttings. Sand, sand/peat, bark ships (soil conditioner), and other combos will work fine. Crape myrtles often are late to leaf out so give it as long as you can. If you see die back it could return from the roots. I'm in Tennessee zone 7.

  • @traceywaddell4996
    @traceywaddell4996 Před 2 lety

    In your previous video, you placed the crepe myrtle cuttings in wet sand in cups. How do I know when to move them to soil pots? Or, do I just leave them in the sand until they are ready to transplant to the ground as you show in this video? Thanks in advance.

    • @Growingthehomegarden
      @Growingthehomegarden  Před 2 lety

      I usually will leave them in the sand just until they have some roots established then pot them up in a good potting soil. When doing that I completely saturate the sand so I can easily remove the cuttings then pot them up. Just be careful that you don't damage any of the roots as they can be tender.

    • @Growingthehomegarden

      Forsythia roots extremely well. There is no need for rooting hormone. Take 6 inch hardwood cuttings and put them in a pot. Keep the soil moist and you will have a bunch of Forsythia. They can root in water as well but I prefer the other way.

      Hi Joel, in the comments of that video some people asked the same question. That round of Magnolia cuttings did not make it. They began to rot and I had throw them away. The method should work though. Greenwood cuttings can dry out fast so I would recommend tenting or misting to improve success.

      It is. Softwood cuttings work best. Leave 1 or 2 leaves on the top of the cutting and take one about 4 inches long.
