Hello and Welcome to Growing The Home Garden. Way back in 2007 our family bought our first home and began the process of transforming a barren landscape into our home garden. I started off by detailing my experiences on my blog which you can find at GrowingTheHomeGarden.com. This CZcams channel is a continuation of that process, what I've learned to do since being here, and sharing that process over the years. The videos are about plant propagation, vegetable gardening, plants, and garden projects. Growing The Home Garden is located in the Middle Tennessee area south of Nashville in zone 7 (Specifically between Spring Hill and Columbia, Tennessee). How to Propagate Virginia Sweetspire (Itea virginica)
Itea virginica or Virginia Sweetspire is a beautiful native shrub that also happens to be great to propagate! It is commonly used by landscapers in all kinds of places so it could be a great plant to propagate within a backyard nursery business.
Itea in the fall erupts with a red fall color and in the spring sends out stalks of fragrant flowers. There are a many varieties of itea available so be sure to choose one that will fit your location. Most of what you will find grows 3-4 ft tall and wide.
Itea roots in about 3-4 weeks. The cutting I show in the video rooted in 3 weeks. It was one of 3 I tried. The other two failed due to poor air circulation.

I love Russian sage.
How do i get them to germinate?
They should germinate well from seed if you surface sow and leave them uncovered or only lightly cover the seeds. Keep them watered and in 10 to 14 days.

I have a nice sturdy one in the ground now. Very healthy yet really dense. How much have you pruned yours? It’s about 18” tall now.
A great video! I am potting up some cuttings of these I did last year today (it's funny that this popped up on my feed). The cuttings are currently blooming in their little containers. They rooted pretty readily for me as well, definitely a cool plant!

So i have some salvia (perfect profusion) that is all bloomed out and turned brown. I was about to cut off the spent blooms when I noticed what seems like the spent blooms themselves are blooming again. Am i mistaking soon to be new blooms for spent blooms? or do they rebloom without being pruned?
They can rebloom without pruning but they tend to be shorter than the first set of stalks. You can get better blooms by pruning out the old ones and encouraging new branches to grow.

Just found this video(4 years later). How large did you let the sage get before actually planting it where you wanted? Did your sage take off after planting? I planted some last year and they died. Would you suggest mixing some sand into the ground where they are planted? I have some little ones and am hoping they will grow. Thanks
I would recommend getting it to the point when it has 3 to 4 good little stems before planting it in the garden. My trouble with Russian sage has been too much shade. We've moved now so we have a lot better situation for sun loving plants like Russian sage. I wouldn't mix sand as sand + clay makes a brick. But I don't know your soil situation. I would add drainage with fine pine bark shavings (soil conditioner). The key with Russian sage is light, heat, and dryness. Too much moisture is bad so adding drainage to the soil helps immensely! Hi. Thanks for video. I have question about soil. It's just yellow sand? nothing more?
I will normally use play sand, builders sand, or paver sand. It's an inert material that doesn't harbor diseases. You can use other combinations that should work too. Perlite/peat or vermiculite/peat are often used. Even fine bark shavings works. The idea is to minimize the opportunity for pathogens to hurt the cuttings.

Shade definitely. The cuttings will dry out way to fast otherwise. A little dappled sun would be fine but not full sun. I would do most of my cuttings under the shade of a Japanese maple. That worked really well.
I planted 5 buckeye seeds and only one sprouted. I put it in an individual pot until it was about 4 inches tall. Transplanted it in the ground and now the leaves are turning copper color and falling off. The tiny stems are still green, but worried it's dying. We've had a lot of rain lately and I'm wondering if that's the reason. I'm in WI - any suggestions?
How much sun does it get? They generally prefer a dappled light situation which could lead to the branches/leaves turning color and falling off.
It’s funny how those mini greenhouses turn into pot holders hahaha! Especially by June/July.

I love this. I just started learning about gardening and it amazes me to see my plants growing. I spent a fortune on my backyard and plan to attack the front yard next year. In the meantime, I’ve started propagating the Danica arborvitaes that I have in my backyard. It’s so exciting!
Does the move mean we’ll never know if your Japanese maple seeds stratified properly and sprouted?
I think I answered that in the comments of that video. I had a rodent invasion and they ate the seeds before the winter was over. Unfortunately they didn't sprout but not because of the method. Once we are finally settled I hope to do that again. I need some more Japanese maples at the new place!
I made a bunch of cuttings of mine and my 2 year old saplings were just planted to line our new driveway.
I mulch my tomatoes with grass clippings to keep the soil cool and moist for even watering.
I have done this and it’s such a treat! I did it with coppertina. A real beauty.
I brought my pepper plants indoors to over winter in a basement window. I’m already seeing baby peppers growing from it. Doing this from now on.
I have a 7 foot weeping willow I started from cutting. The deer ate my previous tries in situ. This time, I rooted it in containers until they were big enough to plant out. I’m so pleased!
Oh! I never thought of taking birch cuttings. I found previous year seed pods hanging from a birch tree in spring and started the seeds. It was amazing! I had a forest of 40-50 seedlings in the palm of my hand. That was 3 years ago, and now I have a bunch of young forests started. I love birch 😍.
In regards to grass cuttings I think they are great as well. However, in the UK we get lots of blackbirds and hedgehogs who make a mess of them lol.
I’ve done the surgery and it works! This is one reason that growing squash over an arch isn’t always such a great idea. At least if it rooted along the ground, you have a chance.
I agree 200% . That’s a pet peeve of mine. I see homes with foundation plantings way too close!😱 I like about 2 feet from it and plant for the mature size diameter. I worked at a garden centre and would always explain that in addition to the overhang, you still need air flow, and to be able to maintain your house i.e. clean windows, using ladders, xmas lights, pruning shrubs etc… .
I have actually experimented with lemon balm and it does repel mosquitoes. I soaked a ton of leaves in a light cooking oil in a mason jar and stuck it in a sunny window for about a week. You can change out with fresh lemon balm until the oil has a lemony scent. I rubbed some on one leg and sure enough, the mosquitoes only went for the untreated leg. 👍🏻
Don’t even get me started on “patents “ for God’s gifts from nature. My understanding is propagating plants (patented or not) for personal use and not for resale, is fine. They just don’t want you making money off “their invention” greedy folks that they are. If they want to come after me for propagating my own, they’ll have to catch me first 😉. 😂

Will seed be exactly as parent plant
Most Japanese maples grown will end up will look different from the parent plant. A few may look the same. Bloodgood seems to look fairly close to the parent. The seedlings even if they aren't the same are usually pretty nice and can be used for root stock in grafting.

You're welcome! They grow very easily so you shouldn't need to worry too much!

I think that would be a great strategy. It would allow the plant to get acclimated to it's new spot through its root system before expending energy on blooms.

Are you meaning catnip? Catnip is a prolific self sower. Catmint is related but much better contained. I've never seen it grow beyond an easy to manage clump.
What kind of soil do you recommend for propogating? Does it vary by plant type or is there a "one size fits all"?
It's a little bit of an "it depends" type answer. For very easy stuff like Thyme you can simply plant them in regular potting soil. They root well or may already have roots. More difficult plants may need a sterile planting medium in which case the easiest to use I find is sand. Some people will use peat/perlite/vermiculite. One combo I like is peat in the lower half of a container then sand on top. There isn't a truly one size fits all situation but in general sand works well for me so that's what I generally recommend.
