  • Foundation plantings help to soften the exterior of a home and make it blend in better with the landscape. Houses just look a whole lot better when you include plants! For this video I am planting 'Blue Arrow' Juniper which gets 2 ft in diameter by 15 or so feet tall. It's a very compact plant that should allow for a tighter spacing. It will also stay away from the windows on the house and soften the brick exterior just enough! Always take into account the full grown size of the plant you intend to put in. Also try to find plants that fit your space to help minimize the need for pruning!
A few Tips on Planting Foundation Plants:
    1) Factor in the overhang from the house roof.
    2) Give some extra space between the house and the final size of the plant to allow for air flow
    3) Keep good drainage away from your house. There should be a higher soil level next to the house than there is where you plant your shrubbery. Water needs to drain away from the structure.
    4) Mulch with a good layer of mulch to keep the soil regulated with both temperature and moisture.
    5) Right plant right place!!!!

I agree 200% . That’s a pet peeve of mine. I see homes with foundation plantings way too close!😱 I like about 2 feet from it and plant for the mature size diameter. I worked at a garden centre and would always explain that in addition to the overhang, you still need air flow, and to be able to maintain your house i.e. clean windows, using ladders, xmas lights, pruning shrubs etc… .
