      Totally disagree with you. We are in a CX-90 because the CX-5 and CX-50 were too small for families with car seats. A bulky rear facing car seat prevented the front seats from being comfortable for taller drivers. You now have the ability to sell a real family sized 5 seater.

    I have a hard time understanding some corporate decisions... They already have the CX60 in other markets that looks great, isn't it cheaper to just bring that model over, converting whatever needs to be converted to comply with regulations and just call it a day!? What's the point of having another model that looks identical to an existing one and opening up an additional production line and exhausting resources to do more of the same? If people don't like the CX90, what makes you think they'll buy an identical looking CX70 just because of a row delete!? Makes no sense.

    Nice job Kirk. You and the Straight Pipes guys seem to be the only ones who call the CX-70 what is. A CX-90 without the 3rd row. Why the hype and the 1 year wait? A shrunken CX-90 would have been nice. Maybe Mazda can provide a set of CX-70 badges to CX-90 buyers for times when the 3rd row is folded down?

    • @PlaAwa
      @PlaAwa Před 6 měsíci +2

      Brilliant option. If the badge was illuminated by LEDs, they'd only have to switch off the bottom left-hand quarter of the lights of the numeral nine (auto-trigggered by the seat-fold). BTW, for a shrunken version of the CX-90, see the CX-60. I'm kind of relieved that there's a 'lower' version of the CX-90 that doesn't compromise the ability for me to sleep in the back. Glad they kept that length.

      @@kolt9051 I guess the same goes for the Kia Carnival? I was actually considering one of these at one stage, given that a main application was the ability to sleep in it. The minivans generally have a nice flat floor throughout with removable seats. was also looking at hiaces, especially when they had the V6's in them for a time. but Maz came out with the inline sixes just as I was going through a nerdy mech eng phase, all about the harmonic balance etc. and it's hard to look elsewhere. I guess the defender 130 ticks most of the same boxes but then falls apart with price and reliability (or related trust), plus it's body on frame and I'm not into off-roading. the CX-70 is compelling, especially because like you, I don't need 7 seats and these are going to be less expensive that the 90's. It'd be interesting to see whether the screws line up between the two for body mouldings etc. and parts interchangeability in general. a fan of modding and unique frankenstein creations.

    I'm not quite sure why they delayed the launch of this. I was hoping for a slightly shorter wheelbase and curb weight... and all we really got was a CX-90 with no 3rd row and less premium trim. The hope as well was that the back end would be more rounded and a little less "bulky". I guess I was hoping for a supersized version of the CX-50 with a that wonderful CX-90 powertrain. Remember how Honda created the current Passport? They just took the third generation Pilot, cut about 6 inches from the length and called it a "new" model. I think that's what Mazda is trying to do here. At least Honda eventually restyled the front end of the Passport to look different from the Pilot in 2021.

    • @rithvikyerreddu3704
      @rithvikyerreddu3704 Před 6 měsíci +11

      Thing is Honda cut off 6 inches from the Pilot to build the Passport. Mazda did not do that here. It’s literally the same length. Their excuse of saying they wanted class leading passenger and cargo volume is lazy. It’s a RWD based vehicle. If they made it shorter it obviously would have less space than a passport, atlas cross sport, etc. but it’s driving dynamics is what would’ve made up for it. Idk how to feel about this. The 3rd row in the 90 isn’t the most roomy, but this is still a 200’ long vehicle with only 2 rows of seating.

    @PlaAwa Před 6 měsíci +1

    Nice bro, just watched a bunch of 'reviews' and even though you didn't have an actual vehicle, yours has been the best with all the important deets and comparisons. My takeaways and hopes:
    The cost-cutting measures in relation to the cx-90 are also weight-saving and with the blacked-out bits and red interior, it's probably safe to say that this is being marketed as a relatively sporty vehicle.
    Given that this drivetrain has now been in production for nearly two years, there must be enough data and feedback to provide for development, so hopefully there will be some hotter engine versions not currently offered in the 60 and 90.
    I mean it's a big-bore turbo inline six - isn't this the epitome of 'potential'? A bigger turbo, added intercooler and bigger exhaust (stainless steel, mandrel bent) would be a nice (and easy) start but somehow this seems set to be more of a 'bread and butter' product, with all the added plastic etc.
    Let's hope we don't have to wait for the next Mazda6 for the hotter stuff. And let's pray that someone in Mazda with power is keen to unleash the hidden beast. They're already saving time and money by reusing the cx-90 for this 'new' model, so there are no excuses!
    BTW you have a good point regarding things maybe being more complicated if the 5 & 7 seaters had the same model number. I've experienced some related confusion with my Outlander.
    Separating them keeps things simple and allow for a whole new set of cheaper options, as we see. Plus it's quite astounding the number of trim levels on offer in the USA as it already stands with the CX-90.
    Bring on the CX-70 SP or MPS! (or some better-sounding modern equivalent!)

    Failure on Mazda for not elongating the Mazda CX-60 and giving clear differentiation in their line-up. Makes me wonder what the overseas Mazda CX-80 will end up being.

      I was wondering that too. Now I am guessing they will take a CX-60 and cram in a miniature third row. If they won't spend the money to give the US market a truly different vehicle, why would other markets get a third model of an entirely unique size?

    With this CX-70 released, Mazda is just asking a slap and punch at their face. Mazda shouldn't consider CX-70 a new model, and this is not even close to a CX-90 face lift. This is just a package option that should offer in CX-90 where you can select YES or NO for 3rd row just like Tesla Model Y. Mazda might as well not telling the American they are launching CX-70 if they are not ready. I don't understand what market Mazda is trying to sell CX-70, I can technically buy CX-90 with 3rd row fold down. Unless the pricing CX-70 is like half the price of CX-90, then is a different story. Sigh !!!

    The CX60 was more closer to a compact crossover rather than a midsize. As much as people are hating on the 70 it will still sell because it will be cheaper than a 90 and have more storage space and for many that will be enough.

    I'm happy it's the same size, though I would have thought they would do what Genesis does with the GV-80 (which is to offer a 3rd row delete model with less content than the 3-row.) But if they had the will to put this drivetrain in a sedan, I would be super excited! I just have a lot of doubts such a vehicle will ever come.

    • @JT-fq2bl
      @JT-fq2bl Před 6 měsíci

      The GV80 never tried to be a true 3 row crossover like the CX-90. It always sees itself as a X5 & GLE fighter. As for the miniature 3rd row, you only get it with the V6 powertrain. The highest trim is supposed to give you that luxurious Maybach feel. If you want to go the sporty route, we have the upcoming GV80 Coupe that's have a host of changes that is unique to that vehicle. The CX-70 is a half-ass vehicle comparison to Q8/GV80 Coupe/Atlas Cross/GLE Coupe/X6 in differentiating from their more traditional forms.

    This (same vehicle as CX-90 minus the 3rd row, and no fancy luxury interiors) has been predicted for months. I was fine with the idea, but thought they'd at least change the rear end to be a bit more raked or "coupe-like" (think BMW X5 & X6, or VW's Atlas & Atlas Cross Sport.) But giving us all the cargo area of the CX-90 could be a plus to some who don't want or need a 3rd row and don't want to haul it around everywhere they go. We'll see - it's great to have choice though (all the 5-seater SUVs out there, not just a CX-70 & CX-90.) The customer wins.

    Mazda might have just signed their death knell. They are a small company with limited resources. Bringing a new car to market takes about $1 billion. Mazda has developed the CX-90/CX-70, the CX-60, and are soon bringing to Europe and other markets a CX-80. That is three vehicles, admittedly with many similarities.
    The CX-60 would have been exactly in the heart of the market for US buyers, but they are totally absent in the most crucial space. The CX-90 is not cutting it for most people because it is too large. The CX-5 is too small.
    Another problem with the CX-90/CX-70 is the positioning in the market. It compares favorably with things like an Explorer, Highlander, Telluride, but does not go far enough to take conquest sales from Mercedes and BMW. The CX-90 lacks the small luxury touches to really be the complete package. Mazda spent a billion dollars to develop a RWD platform and in inline 6, only to cheap out and not put auto lock/unlock sensors on the rear doors. The entire car is full of puzzling cheap touches like that.
    I have no knowledge of Mazda's finances, but it seems likely they emptied out their coffers and are not going to get much return on this investment.
    Mazda needed to develop two vehicles. The CX-60 and the CX-90. Sell them both around the world. It is going to be very interesting to see just what exactly a CX-80 is going to be. Based on the lie that is the CX-70, the CX-80 will probably be a CX-60 with a tiny third row jammed in.

  • @SkyWKing
    @SkyWKing Před 6 měsíci

    According to BestCar the 6 sedan based on the large product architecture was put on hold since the financial viability was questionable based on how the SUVs were performing. And the CX-70 is a clear sign that Mazda is short on cash to create completely new products. Mazda's sales have been strong last year but that's mostly because many of their vehicles are heavily discounted. The CX-90 in my area is discounted by 2-3k, meanwhile the Grand Highlander has a 6-month waitlist with at least 4k ADM.
    I know enthusiasts love the brand and the media give them rave reviews, but Mazda chose the objectively more expensive way to build large vehicles. But they don't even have the pricing power of Genesis let alone the German brands, and they don't have the economies of scale of Lexus. So they will always make less profit per vehicle. At the end of the day car makers exist to make money, not make enthusiasts happy. Every car company in Japan made record profit this year because of the weak Yen, yet Mazda barely made a profit, even less than Suzuki which is an economy brand.

    Looks like someone filtered the 2026 CX-90 facelift ahead of time. Different bumpers and there you go. Hopefully it has some mechanical or dynamics improvements over the "bigger" brother. Deleting a seat row and changing textures is not worth to take a segment name. I see more differences between the Mazda 3 sedan and the hatchback and both are called the same.

I was hoping he was wrong and we'd get something closer to Europe's CX-60, which is almost a foot shorter than the CX-70. I'm on my second, leased CX-5 turbo Signature and hope the CX-5 survives.
